I had a Contessa 26 for about 10 years. It is a very seaworthy boat. It is a little tender at the start and initially heals relatively easily but then basically stops. The worst weather I had it out in was a 50 mile trip from Summerside PEI to Shediac NB. The wind was recorded at 52 knots with waves in the 26 - 30 foot range. It handled very well.

An impressive result from your many hours of a very careful restoration and I admire your multiple skills. Glad that the wheel works well but a good idea to have the tiller back up. These are very safe boats and I dismiss the the frequent complaint of lack of headroom as the priority is sailing it and not standing around down below. Anyway the headroom is way better than the Folkboat after which David Sadler and Jeremy Rogers designed the boat. Happy sailing Brian

Fantastic.. Thanks for the walkthrough, it's nice to see everything all together after having watched you taking on one job at a time over the months. Looking forward to seeing where you go from here!

Amazingly beautiful. I love the Contessa 26. It and the Alberg 30 are the two boats I dream about. You’ve made that boat good as or better than new. Very impressive and you are entitled to serious bragging rights. The roller furling jib and a larger mid cabin hatch seem to be great additions. Going forward to hank on sails in big seas on such a small boat is an unnecessary risk. Though I get the positives of the pedestal steering as an admirer of classical sail boats the Contessa 26 just deserves a nice shiny tiller. All the stowage in the lazarettes makes makes opportunity for untimely jams and damage. The traditional tiller will make a wind pilot easier to install and more efficient. Either way you boat is top drawer. 👍🏻

I loved what you did here. Just an observation here, and my two cents, old 70's era boats seem to have fiberglass that does not clean well. From what I can see, I think that you are having the same problem. I owned a PY26 and could not get the deck to have that clean look to save my life. Loved all of the videos. Have fun cruising the Jersey Shore.

Thanks David. Other than the kiwi grip, I haven’t don’t much with the deck aesthetics. At some point I’ll wet sand and polish some areas that need it. I used to own the py26’s little sister, the py23. Great memories of that tough little boat and comfortable for its size, but not ideal for offshore.

@@EpoxyAndButylTape The PY23 is a great boat too. Its sad that we as sailors are constantly having to work with boats of manufacturers that are now out of business.

Good job. The drawers with the brass catches are beautiful. Is it the Jeremy Rogers ,British built Contessa, or is it the JJ Taylor version built in Canada? Great job on the wood work. I have an Alberg 35 , the interior needs some TLC woodwork like you did.

I think you meant 60 liter fuel tank, not 60 gallon? The blower system in the engine compartment...I wonder if that was intended for the original gas engine? Like on any boat where the engine is enclosed in a space...to vent fumes? Wow, the bottom of the dodger goes in that bolt rope track..I've never seen that before, very nice, water tight, clean, awesome! Video of you sailing would be great! Drone footage would be even better! Thank you for the videos!

  • @EpoxyAndButylTape

No, I said six gallon fuel tank, though it does sound like I said sixty I suppose. I suspect the blower was installed for heat rather than fumes, The original engine was a diesel and the Yanmar diesel was retrofitted in the 1980's, so I think it would be unlikely that there was ever a gas engine installed.

Lovely boat. Did you consider mounting that latch for the port cupboard at the same angle as the top of the door rather than vertical? Not sure if it would have looked better that way or not. Silly thing but something similar that I spend way too long deciding on with my projects.

I mounted the latch at that spot to match the Nav station on the starboard side. The nav station is heavy, so it made sense to put the hinge on the bottom and the latch on top.
