Contact with KD4QNA via the International Space Station

Ғылым және технология

Another solid ISS contact today with KD4QNA. The Bird was super busy on this pass and I only managed two contacts but I’ll take that any day!!!

Since the satellites go by so fast, we exchange our call signs and grid square. That identifies who we are and where we are at that time. Thanks for watching!

It’s the Arrow II Backpack series. I have a video of the detailed setup on the channel if you’re interested in seeing more of it. 73!

Do you need two radios to communicate with the ISS? One for the download frequency and one for the upload frequency?

If you do not have a full duplex radio like my Icom IC-2730, then yes you would need two. At one point I used a Baofeng HT for the uhf receive and an old Kenwood 2m mobile for the transmit. It worked pretty good.

Looks like an arrow antenna, but I can’t find one with a boom arm that long, what is this?

It is an arrow II. I added a channel to it to accommodate the eventual diplexer, coax, and to add a balance point

What radio for your Tx? I gather you are using the Baofeng for receive?

This was the second iteration. I was using a baofeng on receive and an old Kenwood 2m mobile for the transmitter. The entire system is an IC-2730 now.
