Constructing Australia (2007) Wire Through The Heart

Triumphs and tragedies in building a nation. The story of the struggle to cross a vast continent and build the telegraph line that would bring Australia to the world and the world to Australia.
Australia in the mid 1800s was a land isolated by distance and divided between two very different cultures. John McDouall Stuart, a migrant from Scotland, was determined to cross the centre of Australia and reach the north coast. His success would pave the way for a communications revolution.
Charles Todd had dreamed of constructing a telegraph line through the heart of the continent and in Stuart he found the man who could prove the inhospitable centre could be crossed. The telegraph's construction heralded the start of a new communications era every bit as revolutionary as the internet. News from overseas arrived in hours rather than months, securing Adelaide's position as the centre for early colonial communications.
It made Todd a hero, but Stuart, the man who made it possible, was destroyed by the hardships he had endured and died in obscurity.

An amazing documentary, I have so much respect for our early pioneers. There should be more emphasis teaching this story of Australian history in detail in our schools

How things have changed in such a short time, the suffering endured on these quests would be impossible for most people

Great doco and set of stories. Seems we can barely begin to imagine what it means now in this era of mobile phones and internet and satellite communications via artificial moons in earth orbit -thousands of them fired by rockets so far advanced of what they knew then. When you think of it, really think of it and what happened and what they went through and did. There is this powerful mix of awe and terror and pity and definitely respect. Despite knowing and thinking now of how much wrong and injustice and downright idiocy they also did especially to our Indigenous people they mostly didn't really care to think about, learn from or get to know. I've seen Mr Stuart's gun on Old Government House, Belair National Park. It still chills me to think about it. What they went through, what they did, what they achieved. We don't know how many they killed. Probably quite a lot of people.

In September 2011, the state of Texas abolished all special last meal requests after condemned prisoner Lawrence Russell Brewer requested a huge last meal and did not eat any of it, saying he was not hungry. The meal consisted of two chicken-fried steaks with gravy and sliced onions; a triple-patty bacon cheeseburger with fixings on the side; a cheese omelet with ground beef, tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and jalapeños; a bowl of fried okra with ketchup; a pound of barbecued meat with half of a loaf of white bread; three fully loaded fajitas; a pizza topped with pepperoni, ham, beef, bacon, and sausage; a pint of Blue Bell ice cream; a slab of peanut-butter fudge topped with crushed peanuts; and three root beers. He ruined it for everyone !
