Consort 8: L'Allemande by André Campra (1660 - 1754)

Consort 8
Courtly Ayres & Dances
Saturday September 19, 2020
Danced by Fiona Garlick and John Barnard of The Early Dance Consort.
L’Allemande, as its name implies, is a French dance in the German style. First performed in Campra’s Ballet des Fragments de Lully (1702), it is not related to the Allemande of the suite, but inspired by German folk dance. Chief choreographer at the Opéra in Paris, Louis-Guillaume Pécour, created the dance for the leading professional dancers of the day: M. Balon and Mlle Subligny. It became such a favourite that the notation was engraved and published the same year by popular demand, complete with tiny diagrams of the novel arm positions.
This performance was part of Consort 8's COVID-safe concert.
