Consider the Atheist

Madelyn Murray O'Hair speaking at a convention of American Atheists in 1972.
On May 5th, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court discarded both clauses of the 1st Amendment. This ruling not only establishes a state religion, but it also forces non-Christians to bow their head to the Christian god as part of government business. This week, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court also overturned earlier rulings such that the state may now force non-Christian students to recite the pledge of allegiance including the phrase 'under God' which was added to the pledge decades in 1957. Thus the state has established a religion, and at that moment is already violating human rights with it. There can be no freedom OF religion without freedom FROM religion, and the US has just proved that -again. In recognition of this travesty, I want to share the words of Madelyn Murray O'Hair, founder of American Atheists, who warned us against this very eventuality. Her speech needs to be heard by a larger audience.

She was incorrect claiming that the God being pushed is "white" i.e. European. It is a Jewish i.e. levantine God. Christianity destroyed the native religions of Europe, and Christians see Jews as the chosen people, not themselves.

“I'll tell you what you did with Atheists for about 1500 years. You outlawed them from the universities or any teaching careers, besmirched their reputations, banned or burned their books or their writings of any kind, drove them into exile, humiliated them, seized their properties, arrested them for blasphemy. You dehumanised them with beatings and exquisite torture, gouged out their eyes, slit their tongues, stretched, crushed, or broke their limbs, tore off their breasts if they were women, crushed their scrotums if they were men, imprisoned them, stabbed them, disembowelled them, hanged them, burnt them alive. And you have nerve enough to complain to me that I laugh at you.” ― Madalyn Murray O'Hair

I personally speak out against religion. Not to audiences, but to people with religious faith. It is hard, though. Like banging your head against a brick wall. And political correctness puts a spanner in the works, especially in the work place. Have you ever tried discussing the stupidity of religion at work, with a colleague who has religious beliefs? If you're not careful, you could get into trouble with your employer. If you try to discuss it with a muslim, you could get murdered.

For me, the words spoken so beautifully, and precisely in this video, are that type of, "seeing the light" moment that all christians recall. BTW William was an atheist until 33-34 years of age His mother took his first daughter away from him (Robin) born in 1965!! He was drafted into the army & spent 4 years in Vietnam (1965-1969)!! His 2nd daughter Jade was born in (1977)!1 His mother use to go to porno theatres in I believe Baltimore in the fifties & come home & explain the sexual scenes to William & his younger brother John & boasted how she was the only woman in the porno theatre!!

Hebrew not only being revived but becoming a national language once again!1 The only archaic language to do this!! Back say 120 years ago most Jews did not speak, read or write Hebrew, now 9-10 million now speak it!! The 1878 years of the Jews wandering the nations (70-1948 A.D.) was fulfilled Bible prophecy!! Soon the Jews will come to accept Jesus Christ/Yeshua as the promised Messiah!! I think I first started to drift towards atheism at age 7, in 1997, when the Hale-Bopp Comet came close to the earth and was observable from my low-light pollution Irish hometown. I still have the newspaper clippings of images of the comet from way back then that my mother cut out for me and stuck in a scrap book. I remember piecing together the coming of the comet with the images of dinosaurs being wiped out, millions of years ago, by an asteroid that I found out about from the encyclopedias that my grandfather gave me and which my older sister taught me how to read when I was 5. I remember figuring out then and there that the story of Adam and Eve had to be false, which my teacher told me was true and that Adam and eve existed with dinosaurs. After that it was a snowball effect, I began to analyse everything teachers said about religion, by asking questions like "if there is intelligent aliens on other planets, do those aliens go to heaven?" which I knew they could not answer, or if so they answered "no", a response given as an answer but to which can only lend it self to a new, sometimes infinite regress, of questioning, which shows the responses given to these questions are not satisfactory answers. I found out years later I was engaging in a Socratic dialogue, the best way to debunk supposed religious wisdom.

For me, it was the concept of Hell that challenged my notions. When I was around 5 or 6, and my parents put me in Sunday School, whether I wanted it or not.... Someone got the idea to pass around a pamphlet of what the other religions believed. Some of the stuff didn't seem too bad. It also had the population demographics next to it. It didn't take me very long to realize that most of the world wasn't Christian. Or that most Christians were Catholic. From there I simply asked someone about this.... "Are ALL these other people going to hell when they die?" TO which I got the grudging, reluctant answer "Yes." And I didn't say anything at the time, but I remember thinking..... "Well, that's not right. That CAN'T be right. God loves us and cares for us all. I know about bad people, and THEY should go to hell, but it seems like a lot of these people might just believe something different." That one little moment started it's own snowball effect on me. Not that it's relevant, I just wanted to share my own moment.

***** Billy, take a few minutes and read The KJV Bible,Ezekial 38 & 39. Today, for the first time in world history are now united and have signed pacts as allies. They have almost surrounded Israel, and when Assad of Syria is removed you will see the nations allied begin to ramp up for the Great War to eliminate Israel and take Jereusalem as theirs. The Bible speaks of a last day antichrist. It says the antichrist will have a ten nation coalition and that he will pluck three of those nations up by the roots. This is being prepared right now before your very eyes as Saddam Hussein was removed from Iraq, which is modern day Persia along with Iran.Libya is one of the allied nations, and as you saw Mohammar Ghadafi was removed from power and killed. Now Syria, the Assyrian Empire at one time is next. It is going on right now with Russia and China supplying them with arms as the means to get this accomplished. It will eventually, and the antichrist will arrive out of the peace negotiations that will go on after they attack Israel. He will appear as a peacemaker but he will have anything but peace on his agenda. He will decieve billions due to their willingness to do anything for peace. The nuclear aresenal being constructed now by Iran with Russia's help will eventually be used on Saudi Arabia as a means to deny the western world its energy supply, this in short is World War 3. It is terribly unsettling but with two world wars already fought as proof that it has happened and is capable of being done again,it will as the End Times Bible Phrophecy unfolds. You are living in the last of The Last Days of Bible Prophecy.Israel was formed in 1948,and one of the scriptures reads: For this generation shall not pass before the return of the Son of Man. I believe the great war will start before 2027. I say this because of a calendar called The Hebraic Prophetic Calendar, and it ends in 2027. I hope mankind has more time but with the global financial meltdown and the Bilderberg Group setting it up to do it again,a fight for basic neccessities will have to be fought in some areas. The current scumbag administration in the white house now is having 100,000,000 dollars a month printed and funneled through Wall Street to prop up the stock market, when the ensuing bubble burst, many people will lose their entire life's savings and the economy, that's on life support now, crashes will have no jobs or means to feed their familes. And now for gays how they shouldnt have the same rights in addition to the "religious freedom" bills that allow discrimination based on religion? MY problem with Christianity is the followers cannot accept those that dont agree with their views and only seek to call us "haters of god" Some do, Me and many others? I Dont care; god or no god it has No impact on my life, and I wouldnt follow a tyrannical childish ruler who has self esteem issues.

***** It is no problem, but I know the struggle you mean. I have friends that are gay, but think Christian fairy tales, like Satan as Real, as real as saying Gravity is real, or the number "Six" is Evil. One cannot say things are Fact unless they can be Proven. I can prove gravity exists by dropping an object, you cannot prove the existence of supernatural beings.

Harold Plemons So pointing out flaws is "Hate"? And yes, religion, like any other belief can be used to justify things when it is not true, but this speech is not about hate, it is disagreeing with the theology of Christianity, for the bible has been used even since its birth to discriminate and justify their actions, especially early on. Let's take for example the clause "Thou shall not steal." It didnt stop early Christians from taking from those they have pillaging and have killed, then again, technically it no longer belongs to the dead, not the dead men, not the dead women, and not the dead children. All for not believing. I do not care for religion; it bares no impact in my life, it wont stop me, either if we can prove there is a God or not, from doing what I can to better the world. I dont need a higher power to tell me to help a beggar, to help those less fortunate than I. And if you want an example of someone who hates Christianity, then she would say "If you believe in god you are nothing but ignorant and not worth conversing with and have no right to call yourself intellectual." As opposed to constructively saying "Your bible has...alot of inconsistencies, just at least ponder that before being so sure you are right and I am wrong in terms of beliefs."

This is a _really_ good speech from 10:43 onward, but she almost lost me with 10 straight minutes vitriol against atheists. The history of the constitution and founders' outspoken contempt of churches is truly fascinating in it's own right; and the massive financial burden of government church subsidies, overshadowing the then 15 year long Vietnam War, is striking. I wouldn't blame anyone for skipping the unnecessarily long and derisive preamble, but you're missing a treat if you don't listen to the last 35 minutes.

rataflechera I agree, but 10 solid minutes is a bit much, even for a captive audience; and you could hear their applause fall quiet as she systematically insulted every single listener in attendance. I get the point, but past the 5 minute mark it went from effective to divisive. It was a damn good speech, but you have to be especially careful when you're trying to win hearts and minds by throwing around insults.

(I didn't have the internet when she was around, and it wasn't like you were going to see here on TV) I was expecting someone slinging hate, I guess. She would fit right in today in the online community. I also remember when she went missing and people on the news speculated (that since she was an atheist) that she just took off with that money. I thought she spoke very well. I enjoyed this video very much.

It seems to me that to Christians God is a lottery machine. Think about prayer requests, for instance. The notion seems to be that the more people pray, and the more often they do it, the higher the chances that whatever is being prayed for will happen. For this reason prayer requests are often forwarded like chain letters, especially since the widespread of online social media. There are striking parallels with the lottery: It's common for groups of people to pool their money to buy as many tickets as possible, thus increasing their chances to win something. The more people participate in the pool, the more money they put into it, and the more lottery tickets are bought, the higher the chances. If I were the Christian God, I would be completely appalled and offended by this. Believers are basically treating him like a lottery machine. Like a wish fulfillment automaton that might grant your wish if enough people pour their resources onto it. This is an insult to their God, even from a Christian perspective.
