Hasan is underestimating. It's not that they're dumb. Here's how it works: 1. The far-right knows it's satire, but they still idolize it because they look at Homelander and think "This, but unironically". 2. The regular right also knows it's satire, but they're still capable of enjoying the show, as long as it's entertaining. 3. So, the writers decided to make it more and more on the nose, so as to "clear any confusion". But there was never any confusion. You made a character that represents the far right. They loved it. You made him narcisistic, handsome and powerful. So you try and act as if they're just dumb and didn't notice it was satire. They DID notice. They just don't care. Like a sexual fantasy, they just want to continue indulging in it. So they can still enjoy it for as long as Homelander himself doesn't point to the camera and say: "Hey! I'm evil and you're stupid!" Which is pretty much what they made him do, and that's why right wingers are pissed, that's why they're complaining about "poor writing". It was blunt before, but now it's just so in their face that they can't even indulge in it anymore.

@@viciouspen Ok, please hear me out. It's no grandmaster plan, and it isn't a case of just plain dumbness either. It's a matter of optics. I'll explain with a video game. Helldivers 2. You know that in the game's universe, you're in the wrong, it's obviously satirical, but it's still an incredibly popular game, many enjoy it (including the far right, who, again, indulge a bit too much in the roleplay). Why? Because even though the Helldivers are obviously portrayed as fascistic cannon fodder, it still feels epic and grand. It's still fun, and that allows the far right to put the fact that it's a satire aside and just indulge in militaristic roleplay. Just forget that it's satire and have fun with violence and gameplay. It's not that they *don't know* it's satire, they do know. They just put it aside. Now imagine for a moment if all the NPCs started pointing the finger directly at the player, saying "you're literally Hitler" every 5 seconds. Imagine if after every completed objective, the game condemned war crimes. It would probably stop being enjoyable and become just annoying to them. That's what right wingers are complaining about in The Boys. Homelander is obviously satirical, but seeing that the far right was idolizing him, they cranked it up even more, and it just ended up being not enjoyable to them anymore.

You must not have watched the spinoff show. They should have developed it sooner. They may have already had something else and that is why they were not afraid of Homelander.

  • @brianc620

Homelander is as much of a villain as Trump is - in other words, he’s just an empty puppet. Vought is the villain. They’re the ones that created Homelander and will just create another Homelander after he’s gone. The show’s true satire is how they accurately depict both in the show and in the fandom how the right and left will fight each other while the actual villains just continue to do what they do.

I actually disagree. I think that's the point of the comics, but the show to me seems to be heading in a different direction. I think they're setting Homelander up to be the out of control final villain that was created and encouraged until his ego outgrew it. He's basically Donald Trump to the part of the Republican establishment that wants rid of him now.

@@GliphAbar-ie6ri Homelander being an out of control final villain is not outgrowing Vought. If it wasn't clear enough to you, that's the exact result of Vought's abuse. But, people will blame Homelander in both the show and in reality rather than focus on the actual villain. It's just like how people obsess over Trump but ignore everything wrong that led to his creation. When Homelander is gone, do you think that the type of corporate abuse that allowed for his creation will also be gone? I doubt it.

The GOP did not create Trump. Trump is a singular anomaly spawned from a boom of male idiocy. Men have not been this dumb in many many decades, and THAT is what created Trump. Weirdly enough, Trump actually is a monkey wrench in the machinery. Luckily for the elite, he is also a part of the elite, so what's good for Trump is good for those who normally create the presidents. Even when the shadowy figures pulling the strings fail at pulling the strings.. their strings still get pulled.

@brianc620 You're missing my point. Homelander is clearly the consequence of Vaught and what they do and stand for. Vaught's villainy and its real world counterparts are made very clear. That doesn't mean they purposefully designed for things to go to way they are. We're already at a point in the show where Vaught and Homelander don't align anymore. It's like how Fox News radicalises people into the far-right fascist pipeline. But the Fox News executives don't actually want a Fourth Reich, or to upend the American liberal order.

I think there are two different types of writing. There is profound writing that doesn’t cater to anything except the writers point of view. Oftentimes the writing’s value isn’t fully recognized until way later when the writer has long since passed away. And then there is entertaining writing that caters to the masses, it doesn’t really stand on anything and after the zeitgeist has passed the writing has mostly been forgotten.

I genuinely believe that’s the only way to not pick up on the clear rhetoric that’s been present the entire time. Homelander clearly represents the alt right, and starlight is a clear representation of the whiny, indecisive, over opinionated, pushover liberals. Although one is the clear representation of evil it’s impossible to dismiss. Season 2/3 are literally all about politics (season three especially). Lastly, I agree with hasans sentiment towards the end - consuming content and enjoying doesn’t need to be synonymous with your personal beliefs. It doesn’t make you incorrect or a bad person for enjoying something that doesn’t align with you politically.
