Conservation Controversy/ MARINE BIOLOGISTS REACT TO SEASPIRACY - Marine Biology Movie Club Clips

Welcome to the Marine Bio Movie Club where Kendra Nelson and I review all your favorite ocean-related movies and documentaries! As marine biologists we hope to share some insight on to how accurate or not your favorite movies might be.
This week Kendra and I review Seaspiracy. This film has sparked a lot of controversy within the marine science and conservation world for both the passion it has brought out in conservationists and the concern in fisheries scientists. Kendra and I chat about our initial thoughts when we first watched the film and then go back after doing our own research about the accuracies and inaccuracies in the film. This documentary brought up the topic of doing additional research into what you find interesting.
Tune in in 2 weeks for our review and discussion on MERMAIDS: THE BODY FOUND.

Hi there, First off, I appreciate the neutral viewpoint. I think the bottom line of the documentary was that fishing is vastly done illegally and is unnecessary. I think that if you can ask yourself the question: Do we need to eat fish or any meat to survive as a species? and the answer is yes, then do it sustainably. However if that answer is no, which I personally believe it is, then we shouldn't be doing it at all. (Here's my soapbox speech:) There's nothing you can't get from a totally plant based diet that you get from meat, so why support the most environmentally destructive industries in the world if we don't need it? For you guys and others who care about the Ocean, it should be a priority of saving the ocean over short term pleasure. I agree with your viewpoint that the good deeds certain mentioned organizations do should not be trumped by their bad. I think the documentary was just supposed to be an eye opener for those who are unaware of the amount of greed in the industry, not only by the fishers, but by those organizations that take money to support things they know is bad. I'm doubting they had intentions of winning an oscar or anything. Nonetheless, I hope you enjoyed this comment and I wish you the best of luck with your channel in the future!
