    I find Eastern Rite liturgies ethereal. I attend the Latin Mass in the Roman Rite and I’ve been to a Maronite liturgy once. I think I want to attend a Byzantine Catholic liturgy next. No matter the differences between Orthodox and Catholics, one thing the Orthodox have done really well is keep the beauty of their churches and liturgy alive. Catholic Churches are starting to restore their beauty and hopefully in time the Masses and churches will have their former grandeur.

    @violinchan7726Most of the byzantine catholic churches were in communion with the orthodox church or eith the oriental orthodox church.Their tradition,theological beliefs and their divine liturgy all align with the orthodox church but they accept the infallibility of the pope.Its nice to see some churches that represent both of the major ancient denominations and add a bit of orthodoxy into the roman catholic faith.

I understand though that this is really the best liturgy the Russian Church has to offer, and that I am not ashamed of Low Mass at my little local church. I would say however that I still love Solemn High Mass of St. Gregory.

    We aren’t perplexed. We are Orthodox making a correction. Roman Catholics refer to this as Byzantine when they imitate it. However in Orthodoxy, we refer to this as simply the Liturgy(of St. John Chysostom). Byzantine is used to refer to the Greek style of music and art in a liturgy or church. What you see here is a Russian Liturgy. Not Byzantine. The two are actually different. Not just in music but in some small practices/observances as well.

    When a bishop celebrates, the Holy Doors remain open for most of the Liturgy. This is therefore visible to those who can see around the celebrant. Were a priest celebrating, the Holy Doors would be closed for most of the Liturgy, and that would tend to obscure this part of it from view. But that's not why the doors are closed. The Epiklesis is not secret. In any event, for Pascha (Easter) and the services of the week following, all the doors of the iconostasis remain open at all times, so nothing is hidden then.

    In some places now (maybe some particular Orthodox churches) there is a scrim (is that the correct word) where people can see through a translucent screen. I suppose a film could show any part of the Divine Liturgy that the priest is comfortable having shown, perhaps for educational purposes, but it's not usual for the laity to be able to see it.

    The closure of the Royal Central Doors of the Iconostas, and often a drawn curtain are symbolic of the separation between God and Mankind that Christ ended by his crucifixion, death, and resurrection. Just as the Scripture tells us that the curtain in the Holy of Holies was torn asunder when Christ died on the cross, the curtain is opened, and so the Royal Doors to signify an end to the separation, after the consecration by the invocation of the Holy Spirit.

There has to be some wheat in the host, but you can use an extremely low wheat gluten host (there are producers) which would be sufficient for most celiacs to not have any problems. you can also choose to only drink the consecrated wine which is perfectly okay canonically as there is no requirement to consume both species.

I'm not lying, nor am I "milleading" as I don't even know what that means (it's not even a word). I need not repent of anything, nor will I ever turn my back on the truth and bow. to satan (Islam)! Deuteronomy 6:4 reads: שמע ישראל ה׳ אלקינו, ה׳ אחד! "Hear (Shmah) Israel (Yisrael) the L-RD (A-onai) our G-d (Elokeynu), the L-RD is one (Echad). There are two words for one יחיד (yachid) which means one singular entity, and אחד which means a unity (such as the case between husband and wife in Genesis 1:24, and G-d in Deuteronomy 6:4). You've yet to comment on Genesis 1:26 where the Triune G-d says: נעשה אדם בצלמנו כדמותנו "Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness". You have no idea in what you are talking about! it wasn't until the time of Rambam (who died in 1204 CE), that the view of G-d being echad was synonymous to Him being yachid. There are even debates in Talmud whether G-d is yachid, or echad. Scripture (TaNaKh, and the New Testament) make a strong argument for the Triune view of G-d. I've wrestled with this issue, and am now a Trinitarian, you've not studied.

    +Giovanni Serafino Yes, in the early church those were separated, and The Body was given into the hands of each communer and then everybody would drink from the cup. However, there were many cases when people would accidentally drop The Body on the floor, which is the highest holy object and thats not good. And drinking from the cup posed many problems for communing the sick and infants. That is why The Church decided to put The Body and The Blood together and feed Them from the spoon - it is practical, natural as in any body those two are together and not against the canons. But using unleavened bread and not giving both The Body and The Blood to the parish is.

    Silvio Do Nascimento The primacy of Saint Peter may be biblical, but the papal supremacy is definitely not my friend. The bishops of Rome were not considered as the exclussive successors of Saint Peter in the Catholic Church before the Schism of 1054 AD. The tradition of the Church was that many bishops preside over the See of Peter. I disagree that there is more unity in modern "catholicism" in comparison to the Orthodox Church, but it is a long discussion. In contrast I could say that there is more love and kindness in the Orthodox Church and that it is the charism of Jesus to His Church

  • @Henri_Ikari

    Silvio Do Nascimento The Orthodox Church does consider St. Peter to be a first among equals. More like a Figurehead in Constitutional Monarchies, while de facto decisions are made by collegial debate. The mistake of Papal infallibility the Catholics did is twisting Papal authority into an unlimited dictatorship taken from the Imperial Roman God-Emperor Augustus, when no man is supposed to be infallible and Jesus opposed any mere flawed and sinful man being elevated to Augustan levels of authority. Look at what sins the Papal Dictatorship has led into: the Inquisition; the mass burning, torture and genocide of Heretics and Homosexuals; the selling of Indulgences that turned the Church into a prostitute-like corporate enterprise offering salvation if you pay for it; the concept of Original Sin which meant that all unbaptized babies are guilty of ''existing'' and will go to Hell; a literal intepretation of Hell that was popularized further by Dante's Inferno when the Orthodox, who focused on iconography and symbolism, merely considered Hell to be a metaphor for the inherent punishment of sin; protection of Paedophiles by the Vatican; and many others that would have disgusted Jesus. Even the Byzantine emperors never achieved the levels of power the Pope amassed during the Middle Ages.

    The Latin Church (i.e. Roman Catholic Church) does not deny the validity of other legitimate rites (including the Byzantine Rite). The Byzantine Rite is used by many Catholics with complete approval by the Latin Church. The Latin Church does not deny the legitimate apostolic inheritance of the Greek Orthodox Church, and therefore acknowledges that these consecrated Bishops and their priests have every authority to minister the sacraments every bit as much as in the Latin Church. I've never really researched the teaching of the Greek Orthodox Church on the Latin Church, but I would suspect that their view is similar on the legitimacy of other rites (including the Roman Rite) and the authority of the Latin Church to minister sacraments as legitimate apostolic inheritors of Christ.

  • @GreekPontus

    @GreekPontus

    gridcaster Eastern Orthodoxy (not only the Greek Orthodox Church) is the fullness of the Church and we can't receive Communion in a non-Orthodox parish. This fact proves that we (Orthodox and "catholics") are not a united Church and that non-Orthodox sacraments are not valid. "Catholic" priests are not seen as legitimate apostolic inheritors of Christ since 1054 AD, when the latin church was separated from the Church. The actual unity requires a unity in faith, which does not exist because of some doctrinal differences (papal supremacy and infallibility, filioque, purgatory etc)
