Conrad has one of the creepiest faces in Berserk (but by no means the scariest). Aside from that, Conrad may not say much but the fact that he’s responsible for the pestilence/plagues occurring in the Berserkverse shows how much influence he has.

So if Void represents Chaos Undivided, Slan represents Slaanesh, the tiny dude with glasses represents Tzeentch, and Griffith represents Khorne, then that leaves Conrad as the representative of Nurgle. Kentaro Miura was a massive fan of Hellraiser and Warhammer 40k

@@beneko1127 I totally see why you think that. I think Griffith represents Khorne because he betrayed his friends and made his first act as a filthy demon a violent spite against both Guts and Casca. He’s also the more militarily inclined and viciously spares no one who stands in his way of conquest.

I think the theory of Conrad being a doctor during the Holy See fundamentals rule when diseases weren’t understood sounds plausible.

Conrad was most likely a monk and he sacrificed his monk brothers and the orphans in his care. He probably was really good at being a healer.... too good. He maybe even tended to children or was an orphan and the plight of kids weighed heavy on him. Being a talented nobody was dangerous in those times.... he might have angered the wrong people and was believed to be a witch or whatever (similar to when Serpico had to burn his mother alive). The people who probably headed this was the religious order he served. When he was going to be killed, in his last moments he was given a choice to be reborn via the sacrifice or die.

One theory was that he was a doctor.....but also a carrier (think Typhoid Mary). As such he unwittingly spread the plague. People caught on that he was spreading it but assumed it was intentional. As Conrad was being burned the Behelit activated and Conrad (upon learning he DID spread the plague) basically snapped and embraced his role

The berserk vids…………..keep ‘em comin.

A healer of some occupation, he often was silent in his approach, but only made suggestions in logic that gained him a following. His sin was gluttony and he lived a life in the plague, where he sent his followers out to find a remedy to the illness killing those around him. All of those he sent died, and were consumed by the rat infestation. After all his help had not returned, he was left with only his wife/ concubine and children. He slaughtered them and ate them for sustenance, but there corpses were also fed on by rats. Succumbing to illness, he locked himself away, closing his eyes and praying as he could no longer witness the despair around him. In his final wish for survival, he was surrounded by rats on the day of his eclipse. He is the king of rats.

Roger Zelazny is a great writer! The first one I read was "Roadmarks,' when I was a kid, and I couldn't stop thinking about it for a while

I agree, guts with the power he has right now can only go toe to toe with the apostles but not the godhand. To gain extreme amounts of power in the berserk universe seems to only have evil celestial beings over everything. So I figure, guts can only stand a chance with the help of slan and becoming an apostle but that defeats the purpose of guts or does it? I just hope and pray to a deity I don't believe that it doesn't end with hugs and kisses type of sh*t

In my head, it would make sense for Guts to at least at some point have the offer of becoming an apostle - if he then gets to meet The Idea of Evil, with the command "do as you please, chosen one" it's conceviable that Guts' only wish would be to gain the power to destroy both the Godhand and The Idea of Evil However, another thought crossed my mind; if this were to happen, and Guts is succesful in his task of destroying the Godhand; how does one kill an Idea? I followed that thought for a while, and concluded; For there to be an idea of something, something concious must be there to think of it. If nothing that has a conciousness exists, there can be no ideas, of anything. Ergo, if there are no people, there can be no dreams, aspirations, or ideas. It is my conclusion, then, that for Guts to actually succeed in the task of ridding the world of evil, he must first get rid of everything that can produce evil. Namely, ALL of humanity. It's sick, dark, and in my head, fits quite nicely with the Canon of the world. I might be WAY off the mark, I'm not a writer

Not really? Like, yeah, Conrad spreads pestilence and is very corpulent, but they're also very silent in stark contrast to how incredibly noisy and bombastic Nurgle demons are, who are famously hyper-emotional and skitter around the battlefield, chanting the names of diseases and tolling great bells. But then you essentially have two that fit into a similar role as Tzeentch and another two that bear a semblance to Slaanesh and none in particular with common themes to Khorne. Void is a contemplative bestower of boons and curses, so very Tzeentch-like, but then Ubik is a shape-shifting, illusion-conjuring, manipulator, so also very Tzeentch-like. Slan is, fairly obviously, similar enough to Slaanesh, but so is Femto. Griffith/Femto is a mercenary warlord, yeah but his main defining attributes are his femininity, pridefulness, performative perfectionism, sexual perversion, and his megalomania over the Band of the Hawk and the world at large as opposed to any actual interest in martial conquest, bloodlust, or warrior honor. It's even addressed that, in his final moments as a human, he struggles to come to terms with the huge loss of life in the pursuit of his dream of the gleaming white castle. He's a notably effeminate man and has the aesthetic motif of gleaming, polished, perfectionism to appeal to others (he's Sigvald the Magnificent on steroids, except more womanly), and has a troubling obsession with having a position of dominance and affection over the general members of the Band of the Hawk, people in general, and especially Casca, Guts, and Charloette. If you're not convinced of the semblance, consider: his transformation to daemonhood came via raping the love interest of his object of obsession, forcing a miscarry/stillbirth, and demonically corrupting said miscarry/stillbirth to use said miscarry/stillbirth as a sacrifice to summon himself to the material world. So there's one Warhammer chaos god entirely unrepresented, two somewhat similar to one, and then two very similar to another. Their similarities are circumstantial: yes, the Warhammer Gods and the God Hand both, to some degree, represent similar vices and have some similar supernatural powers, but that's more due to their vices and supernatural powers just being common literary elements. If there was a suitable champion of Khorne in Berserk, it would be Guts, who has devoted large portions of his life to martial mastery and has a great bloodlust; however, it's Slan and Ubik who have interest in Guts, not Griffith (the only one of the god hand that could be conceived as "warrior-god"), whose only interest in Guts was related to his lust and his greed for control, which is, again, more akin to Slaanesh than Khorne.

Conrad stood out to me much more than any other God Hand member. He was just such a mystery, even more so than Void I would argue. It's just the fact that we have no idea who he is. Even his personality is a mystery because he refuses to talk. We can't even tell from his demeanor like Ubik who, with one look, you can tell is a deceiver. Conrad has hands clasped constantly and only has one facial expression throughout the whole series. That always freaked me out.

Enthralling, you guys. I never found Conrad to be interesting prior to watching this video (and being very versed in Berserk lore), but this video literally gave me a mental 180. What a possibility... a great healer who embraces Demon-kind and thus infect all of those who displease him. Or just for fun. It needn't have purpose. That's true evil, much akin to Slan's dialogue when Casca is being violated; she cries and even remarks the hatred, the brotherhood, the love, the hate, all of it IS TO BE evil, and would be perfectly in line with Conrad's own ascension (or descension, depending on how you want to look at it. either seems valid to me.) It reminds me very much of a film I saw entitled 'Men Behind the Sun.' It's mistakenly listed as an exploitation film. But in reality, it's an extremely realistic renditioning of Japan's Imperial Unit 731 who were in charge of biochemical warfare during WWII and enacted literally THE most brutal and horrible scientific experiments I have ever seen or heard of. They made the Nazis look like Peace Corps members. To anyone interested, and to show that I'm not just full of shit, torrent the film OR read the following wiki, much of it has been verified (and keep in mind, this is just what was declassified. Just like MKUltra it probably just touches the surface of what they actually did to people. I like the world of Berserk.

Average life expectancy drastically increased because of hygiene, sanitation, non cramped living conditions, and access to nutrition. Advancement in medical science has only played a relatively very small role when compared to the aforementioned conditions.

It's actually from a Sci fi classic novel called Slan. Though I'm sure Slaanesh's name came from that novel too

Realized that when Conrad emerged in the eclipse like a phalus it was similar to dune god emperor Leto ii

Void - scribe, mage who prayed to the four elements who he practiced magic from... Ubik - priest/ or coin exchanger Slan - Wife of a noble like a prince or something. She's not a nun, but a noble woman who probably was told how to dress, act, even how to sleep with her husband and when to produce children.
