Gert! You sir are a musical wizard. I've already listened to it another 3 times since we posted. Beautifully done. Keep bringing joy to the neighborhood, whether they want it or not! Nothing but love and respect my friend! Amazing stuff!

In English they call it a stop assistant and in Dutch a Registrant 😅

Yes it is a mix op the words assistant and register( the English word for a register is a stop )

You have just watched a Master at work. I have followed Gert van Hoef for many many years and along with his wife and a select number of Registrants (Stop Assistants), he produces music unlike any other organist that I follow. His Conquest of Paradise improvisation is out of this world, and he has tweaked and fine tuned it over the years. Its well worth while going and following his KZread channel if you want to hear more.

Many, many years ago i fell in love with the music of Vangelis.... i love this version of his song 1492 Conquest of Paradise... who could have imagined sitting in a church listening to Vangelis on a churchorgan? Beautiful.... i enjoyed every second of it!! 💜💜

I'm with you. Gert is one of the greatest organists in history. I've been listening to organists since the early 1950s. He is unrivaled and right there on KZread. Your comments really nail our brotherhood in this music.

The rods are organ stops which connect particular pipes, or combinations of pipes known as divisions, with the various keyboards. this allows the organist to generate different acoustic effects to suit the mood and the broader acoustics of the building. And no, the stop puller, or registrant does not have to be able to play the organ, but must be able to read music so as to anticipate the commands (nods) by the organist. Congratulations on your introduction to the king of instruments.

The registrant is needed on these old pipe organs as they dont have any presets on the keyboards as of modern instruments that with a push of a button the stops can be selected! Most assistants or registrants are choristers with a good knowledge of the music and many know the organ itself.

called organ in church as a healing device for organs / body more than a music instrument the music composition was for that purpose of exciting the enviroment with rigth frequencies as is bells and high cellings to iduce closer to God feeling just imagine to build something like it hundreds of years ago as well thoes buildings is bending the logic about history …

Gert's wife doesn't play any instrument and can pull stops in concerts no problem.

I’m sure the sidekick is pretty good at playing himself. You need to understand the organ and what’s about to happen in the music. Can’t do that if you don’t play at a decent level yourself. But that makes me wonder how improvised it really is. As in it’s not fully according to script: yes. Obviously. As in it came up on the spot, well… Chopin’s Impromptu was written down in detail. Maybe they mean something different than what I do. I just look at a piano and think ‘88 keys, hm. What shall we do now?’
