Conquering the Aonach Eagach Ridge: BRITAIN’S NARROWEST RIDGE | Grade 2 Scramble. Glencoe, Scotland.

Experience the ultimate adventure as we take on the infamous Aonach Eagach ridge, one of Scotland's most challenging and rewarding hikes. Famed as the narrowest ridge on the British mainland.
This grade 3 scramble involves steep ascents, narrow ridges, and challenging terrain that requires careful navigation and climbing skills. But for those willing to take on the challenge, the views are unparalleled.
Join us on this thrilling journey as we navigate the various sections of the ridge, including the notorious Am Bodach and Meall Dearg. Along the way, we'll encounter breathtaking views of the Scottish Highlands and rugged mountain peaks.
However, it's essential to note that this hike is not for the faint-hearted, and there are inherent risks involved. The ridge is exposed, and a misstep can be fatal. Therefore, we recommend that only experienced hikers with proper equipment and climbing skills attempt this trail.
But for those ready to take on this challenge, the rewards are worth it. The sense of accomplishment at the end of the trail is unbeatable, and the panoramic views are truly breathtaking.
There are two Munros (Scottish mountains with a summit of at least 3,000 feet or 914.4 meters) on the Aonach Eagach ridge: Meall Dearg and Sgorr nam Fiannaidh.
Aonach Eagach can be lethal. Amongst its fatalities are very experienced hillwalkers

FS! Is this as treacherous as it looks! Good coverage of the entire ridge! Did the Curved Ridge. If you have done that, how does it compare? Thanks for that! Brilliant!

We tried climbing that before doing this but was too wet, the thing with aonach is that it is really long and tiring. I will have to do curved ridge in good weather looks epic

Level of technical difficulty is similar to Curvrd Ridge but with a lot more exposure and it's a lot longer. Both great days out.

The two ridges are very different. For me, the trickiest bits of the Aonach Eagach were the sections where you are downclimbing the pinnacles - awkward on wet rock. Curved Ridge is uphill all the way.

Its a two car job to be honest, if you have only one car then you're better just doubling back, rather than walk along that road. Don't attempt the quick descent too the Clachaig Inn via the stone shoot route (, there is no longer any scree on it to kick you're boots into, just a really slippery slope now). On Saturday the fifth, three died on this hill, wouldn't be at all surprised if they attempted the stone shoot. By the way its a easy scramble on a sunny day but an entirely different beast if the weather changes and you're up there.

I am getting a bit tired of this. You did not conquer the Aonach Eagach ridge: you traversed it just as thousands of other competent scramblers have done over decades. Some other eedjit a few days ago had his KZread video of Aonach Eagach titled the "Killer Ridge". "Wall of Death" for goodness sake! It is not a "hike" as some very irresponsible scribblers in the UK press have called it in the past few days but it is not beyond the capabilities of any experienced hillwalkers familiar with the Scottish mountains who has basic scrambling experience.

I would say that the ability of the climber dictates how hard a ridge route is. If you have the experience of a rock climber at a high level this is a basic hill walk if your a person that doesn't have any mountain experience then you will find this the hardest challenge of your life, your comment will display your level of competency and experience

In the snow times, it can be challenging. In decent weather, with the right kit on your back in case, a bit of experience with scrambling and a modicum of intelligence, it is a great day out and utterly lovely. But beware - the mist came over Bidean in 15 minutes and I got well lost. Weather can change. Make sure you have the kit.
