His accuracy and timing was as good as ever. Difference was Dustin is more durable at LW, and Conors game hadn’t evolved where as Dustins has. Conor spent his prime years living it up while Dustin was still grinding. It is what it is.

I didn't remember the fight going this well for conor. I guess once you slow it down and see his punches landing clean you realize just how dangerous he still is. I think those punches could have easily knocked out some of the other contenders. I agree Dustin's just been more consistent and Conor probably didn't account for these new calf kicks that make-or-break people these days. Please nerf the calf kicks lol

He was too focused on only punching. He fought like a traditional boxer as he was confident in his hands but the damage from the leg kicks added up and took away his mobility. Ironically, a boxer without mobility is what Conor himself used to call Donald Cerrone... a stick in the mud.

In the second fight, Conor’s boxing and timing seemed pretty much on point but he was a lot more flat footed and completely neglected using his kicks. In the trilogy, Conor went all in on the kicks and the movement, however I did feel like something was off with his boxing ever so slightly since at one instance he didn’t move his head off the center line when throwing his left and ended getting caught by Dustin left instead which seemed odd for Conor but still. I don’t think Conor has gotten a lot worse. I do think the game has caught up to him in a way. If he has regressed it isn’t by much. I’d say the Conor that fought Dustin in the trilogy was imo like a 90-95% prime Conor minus the injured/compromised foot.

He tried to mix his old style (spinning and kicks without the footwork and the couterpunch) and his new style (heavy boxing) and as a result, he was just an average striker. He did good in the first 2 minutes but it wouldn’t have been enough. He lost the thing that made his striking efficient with time. You can tell Dustin and his coaches definitely went into that fight with that leg kick heavy gameplan. Conor is notorious (No pun intended) for having a very wide stance and leaning heavily on his right leg, so taking advantage of that would remove a lot of the slip and counter threat that’s been Conor’s main weapon since the beginning. Add that to the fact Conor literally only attempted to check 1 of the kicks and it was only a matter of time before Dustin finished the fight. Conor definitely landed the better shots through the fight but he was way too interested in trying to headhunt and get the finish early.
@skorpion3993

@Daddy Pluto Well I’m not so sure about Conor being a “better fighter” than Dustin. Conor’s definitely the better striker of the two of them if we’re going by both of them at their best, but if you look at both fighters overall game then Dustin probably comes out as better and more complete. Dustin’s definitely got a better ground game than Conor and whilst Conor’s probably better in the clinch it’s not as significant as the difference in ground game. Plus Dustin can adjust better mid fight, has better cardio and to add to it the better resume despite Conor’s former double champ status seeing as he never defended either of his titles. But I can agree Conor’s gameplan wasn’t very good in this fight, it was pretty clear he was looking to put Dustin away as soon as he could and was headhunting the entire fight whilst disregarding anything else that was happening which was most notably getting his leg kicked off.

It's hilarious how people make every lie up they can to discredit McGregor here. They say he was too weak against Poirier at 155 but he wrestled him and reversed him up against the cage. They say he wasn't as powerful yet he was boxing the head off of Poirier and a good 3-4 times he threw Poirier back with just one hard punch, left straight or lead uppercut. Like at 1:13, they both hit each other but Poirier flies back into the cage, off balance because of McGregor's power and precision. And even despite regressing himself to a flat footed, throw one kick a round, not movement based but pure boxing style because he bizarrely overlooked Poirier for Manny, still McGregor was controlling the fight until those leg kicks set in. And again, he regressed himself to the point where he was leadfooted rather than bouncing, changing levels and distance and angles like he used to pre 2017. Yet people act like just because Poirier landed about 2 significant punches where he then pointed his finger, he was winning the stand up. He wasn't at all. It was his strategic use of leg kicks on an already flat footed McGregor that immobilised him. And we all know what an assassin Poirier is when he smells blood, which is why he then landed his volume punch combo at the end. Poirier won the war but people lie and act like McGregor wasn't winning the battle and just focus on it being a loss without context for how good he was doing up to that point.

Honestly, Conor has some of the best boxing in all of MMA. He can slip and counter very well. The problem is, he's not a very well rounded fighter, at least anymore, and it doesn't take much to take him away from his boxing anymore. Boxing alone, he beats Dustin. But anything else, Dustin has him.
*McGregor is so good, that whenever someone lands a little shot they make a huge deal out of it.* McGregor was beating Dustin in almost every exchange. His leg went limp; you can see it buckle. He wasn’t just hurt, it hit the nerve.

Conor is done xD to see people saying he has anything resembling of the type of fighter he used to be is a complete denial of what happened to him. The hunger is gone, and now that he broke his leg in half, the little he had left of his career is also. If he does come back, he'll get badly beaten. Conor was doing well, and he's forever improving. Its a crazy game. Most people don't understand. Poirier was an underdog in that fight you can read it in his body language. He was also far more busy of a fighter leading into that match. Way more primetime fights against top opps in the last year. Iron sharpens iron, pressure makes DIAMONDS. Excited for Conors return.
Conor’s boxing is so reactionary and responsive. His timing is great but I think he went to out box a guy that loves to get in boxing wars and Conor has always been more calculated in his earlier fights. He was more self-aware
I think these clips really show how the year of straight boxing training fucked up conors fight style when he came back. He’s extremely heavy on his feet and was basically ignoring the kicks while trying to head and body hunt. He was thinking too one dimensional, nothing like his prime where he would mix in crazy kicks and maintain his distance with bouncy footwork. Really exemplifies why you never see pure boxers do shit in mma
If he would have gotten his back off the fence he could have possibly won, one of them woulda, coulda, shoulda moments.

That karate stance is what made him a 2 division champ. It was his ability to control distance and timing from it. This new boxing stance is very heavy on the front leg, his old stance was very bouncy and light footed. He used to have the ability to be in the pocket and land, then be out of range before they land. Now he's just stuck in the pocket relying on head movement.

Those leg kicks were the deciding factors.
There are factors like age and long fight periods that effects both of them and specifically Conor.
At 155 Poirier is more hydrated which allows him to take punches better while also getting an increase in punching power. Meanwhile Conor had the exact opposite effect. Conor clearly doesn’t hit as hard at 155 as he did at 145, and he couldn’t take Dustin’s power while Dustin could take his and not be fazed.
