You can feel his soul, his heartbreak, and his story in his singing voice. His vocal passion is just crazy. Love love love.

One of the most emotionally moving interviews that I've ever listened to. It's heartbreaking that underneath that phenomenal voice and gorgeous smile there's a broken man who's been in a lot of pain. But with clear boundaries on what stays private, this has been a beautiful conversation about an uphill journey towards making one's own proverbial Sunshine and owning his own vulnerabilities and finding inner peace in spite of that. We need more genuine role models like him in the music industry who consciously climbs down from the pedestal fans put him on and is honest about himself being no exception to the fact that we are all humans with secret shit we're battling. I personally have a lot to relate to Conor's story. Physical health can be such a bitch to mental health, especially when a career and everything you revolve your identity around is at stake, and the potential damage could be foundational. Suicide and even its ideation is tragic, but man, he had me at thinking about his parents and grandparents and not wanting to put them through this tragedy. But I guess the silver lining is that love is a such powerful source of strength to carry on, even if we do not want to burden our loved ones with the full understanding of what a dark and hopeless place we're really in. The biggest takeaway for me is to take courage in letting our little birds find the sky. That's definitely something I need to hear in my life today, and I hope I find a way to do that. Man-Made Sunshine is musically very different from Nothing But Thieves but emotionally it hits just as deep (if not even deeper) and every single track on the EP is a cathartic masterpiece. I don't personally know Conor but can't help sending him love, light and solidarity in his ongoing journey towards healing and wholeness. I hope he lives a long, happy and healthy life and keeps making beautiful music to nourish our souls, whether as Thieves or Sunshine or something else. Martin you always do such a good job with Conor. He’s so comfortable with you. It almost feels like a therapy session, not an interview! He is such an honest, precious soul, and his experience of depression feels very close to mine, he knows exactly how to describe it. The second NBT song I ever heard was Soda, and the “I don’t wanna be myself…” lyrics, and straight away I thought wow, that’s exactly it, and started to dig deep into the band and who they were. The lyric about coming back as someone you like also rings so true to me. I love how happy and comfortable he is now, having seen him perform lots of times since 2021 the difference is obvious. He’s so inspiring to me - he makes me feel that maybe I can get better too.

Tysm Conor and Martin. When Martin asked about how family deal with Conor's physical ill health, my heart stopped for a moment. From my own experience yes, you don't want them to know and worry about the full extent of it. But the other side is that people really struggle to understand the full impact on life of symptoms they've never themselves had to deal with. And that lack of understanding, I've found, can create a barrier, distance and a sense of isolation. On the up side, sometimes having long term health issues can give us a perspective on life and a kind of introspection that those with full health don't always have access to.

I can relate to this. First I felt that barrier you were talking about, my friends literally saying "You are so strong, it's hard to believe you are struggling" and it instinctively made me hurt and not understood. But in the past few month I think my perspective changed a little bit. They are good friends and it's not their duty to understand or solve my mental struggles, it's mine. I can ask for help anytime. Also when people are thinking that you are "so strong" it's a red flag, at least in my situation it made me think why is it everybody's impression of me.

@@valtiel9 Yes, definitely, it's no-one else's duty to understand or solve our own problems. I believe in personal independence. But it is a huge help if close family are at least supportive in principle. If everyone around us is dismissive or invalidating (and that can happen with formally diagnosed physical conditions as well as mental health conditions) it's not such a warm place.
