The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is a once-in-a-generation undertaking. Not only will the project deliver much-needed transportation improvements for international travellers, it will also provide jobs and opportunities for growth to the Windsor-Detroit region and includes features that make this project truly distinctive.
The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3). A public-private partnership is a long-term performance- based approach to procuring public infrastructure where the private sector assumes a major share of the risks in terms of financing and construction and ensuring effective performance of the infrastructure, from design and planning, to long-term maintenance.

To everyone involved in constructing/building this bridge, Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What an unbelievable picture of the two guys shaking hands! 🇺🇸🤝🇨🇦. Such an heirloom for their families.
Nice to see the profession of engineering that makes life better for everyone vs. engineering that's preoccupied with making life better and easier for the wealthy. This feat reminds me of New Deal projects, the building up of public infrastructure.
God bless those Iron Workers… Guys (and ladies, I’m sure) who STILL make stuff with their hands. 🇺🇸💥🇨🇦
So thrilled to see this bridge join two of the BEST Countries in the world !!
Absolutely epic build! Skilled trades, organized labour and safety training get these jobs done so everyone can go home to their family at the end of a long day. Union strong brothers and sisters.💪🇨🇦🇺🇸
Heartfelt congratulations to all those workers who participated in the construction of this truly magnificent bridge. I must admit to having a lump in my throat seeing the two steel workers, one from the US and the other from Canada, meeting on the last girder and shaking hands between the flags of our two countries. That picture symbolizes a record setting and historically significant event for Canada and the United States. I can't wait to drive from Burlington to see this beautiful bridge in person and drive across it.
Gordie Howe ......... my hero. I am so, so happy to see this beautiful bridge built and named in his honor. God Bless Gordie Howe.
Congratulations ! Very impressive accomplishment and great photography for historical posterity. Looking forward to coming from Ohio to traverse the span.
The cable-stayed design makes me wonder whether it will have the problem of "ice bombs" in winter.
Major kudos to you all, bravo. People in general really have no idea how hard that is to do well, such that it stands the test of generations to come. Good job. God keep you all.
Congrats to the Black Swamp crew. This has been great seeing the progress
The ironwork’s hand shake ….. should be made into a plaque …and displayed on that spot on the bridge…. !!!
Bridges are such amazing feats of engineering
You, men and women, are heroes. Thanks for a job well done!
I appreciate the multiple mentions of the IUOE.
Very cool video!
Congratulations for good work and for getting her done! 👍
CONGRATS on all the hard work !!!!
Amazing Iron Workers. I couldn't do their job.
Can't wait for this bridge to open. I will drive from the west side of Michigan into Canada, eat a meal there , and drive back.

This incredible achievement stands as a testament to your commitment and skill. Well done on this remarkable accomplishment! Well Done IW 700, IW 25 and Operator Engineers 793!
wonderful!
It’s a legacy project that few people in the world actually get to work on. The emotions are going to be strong for many that take pride in their work as this accomplishment will easily stand for over a century. A lot of hard work and well deserved admiration for it.
Oh, meant to ask, not knowing the evergreen tree custom, and having never seen a tree in the middle of a bridge while driving, where is the tree planted to continue growing? Thanks.
Thej Empire State Building, steel-framed skyscraper rising 102 stories that was completed in New York City in 1931 in only 410 days..DURING the Depression. It never used to take us years to build things. Gordie Howe bridge: First proposed in the early 2000s, the project was met with prominent opposition by Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel "Matty" Moroun, who believed competition from a publicly owned bridge would reduce his revenue. A Canadian federal Crown corporation, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, was established in 2012 to coordinate the bridge's construction and management. Environmental approvals and other permits were approved in the United States and Canada in the early 2010s. Lawsuits by Moroun alleged that the crossing agreement was illegal and the Ambassador Bridge had "exclusivity rights". These lawsuits were denied, along with various attempts to stop property expropriations, allowing the project to continue. The "Bridging North America" consortium was selected in July 2018 to design, build, operate and maintain the bridge, and construction began that month. The CA$3.8 billion cost of construction will be funded by the Canadian federal government, paid for by bridge tolls. Construction is expected to be completed in 2025.

Anyone know why it's bolted? Do they fix it in place properly later, or is this just a temporary stage?
@boldontarian
15 күн бұрын
Since steel expands in heat, welding the bridge together would be inadvisable as it could lead to warping and bending of the structural steel. The bolts and metal plates allow for some movement to accommodate heat expansion. Even wrought iron bridges built in the 1900s were riveted together rather than welded, allowing for heat expansion. Same principle with bolts, only they hold better and can be tightened as necessary.

The Ambassador Bridge is still necessary as it connects the two parts of the Detroit-Windsor metropolitan area. My guess is that it will be eventually purchased by Michigan & Ontario, with a Michigan & Ontario international crossing organization formed to operate & maintain all the crossings from the Blue Water Bridge to the Gordie Howe Bridge, similar to the NY NJ Port Authority that's responsible for all the NYC crossings to NJ

@@Randy201851 They never should have given it up to the Moroun family to begin with, so hopefully the politicians will show as much iron as these workers and expropriate it for some sort of public bridge commission to run between the two national governments. Absurd that something requiring an agreement between two countries should be in private hands. Fat chance of it getting resolved that way though, since they had all this time to do so already and never did.

@@wyldhowl2821 The Ambassador Bridge was always privately owned. The original corporation that built it & operated it for decades put it up for sale, Moroun outbid the others, including Warren Buffett, taking control in 1979. Canadian PM Harper offered to buy the bridge from Moroun but the several US$Billions Moroun wanted prompted Harper to exclaim he could build a new bridge for less, hence the massive bridge under construction just a mile down stream

There is still a lot of work left to do before this bridge can open to traffic. Yet to be completed: - Access ramps to bridge - Access ramps to I-75 and ON-401 - Bridge deck surfacing and guardrailing - Connections to local cycleway and walkway networks - Operations and maintenance facilities - Ports of entry - Toll plaza - Utility installation for electricity, communication and fire suppression
Honestly, you should’ve hired me to make this video because I would’ve filmed it in crystal clear 4K. Then you wouldn’t have had to connect the bridge in the dark either and viewers could see it more clearly.

No plan where to park, turning off water, electricity in a heatwave with no warning. At least the shaking made my lights in the hallway work again. Some innocent person is gonna get hurt. Try coming out of Tim Hortons at that street, You won't be able to see anything cause they're so dumb they put a huge white sign right at the curb blocking line of sight. If only the City of Windsor was competent or we had journalists in Canada. Everyday I pass old and young people on the street and they start bitehn with me first about it, and I tell them call the city like I have. 70 year old woman today said to me "they hung up" lol.
