Confessions of a Binge-Eating, Wellness Influencer | Jamie Hess | TEDxWilmingtonSalon
NOTE FROM TED: This talk contains a discussion of disordered eating. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Ever struggle with emotional eating? The battle is more universal than we like to admit… and the shame we feel around it can be immense.
In her TEDxWilmingtonSalon talk, Jamie Hess describes she found herself stuck in a cycle of compulsive overeating after the birth of her first child. Her instinct was to hide and try to “fix it herself.” What followed was a downward spiral that felt eerily familiar… similar to the battle with drug addiction she had fought in her twenties. Jamie is a wellness lifestyle expert and the co-creator of @NYCfitfam. She and her husband were named “one of the seven fittest couples on Instagram” by Women’s Health magazine and they have been featured on Dr. Oz, The Daily Burn, Refinery29, The New York Post, The Observer, MindBodyGreen, and more. Their focus is on fitness, nutrition, wellness hacks, and conscious parenting. She brings two decades of experience as a PR professional and brand strategist, with clients including W Hotels Worldwide, LinkedIn, McDonald’s, Barry’s Boot Camp and more. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Having been that helper who has walked with a compulsive overeater for the past six years, I would add a third point to the reason why someone doesn't ask for help - They don't want to give up their addiction. There's always some reason why they can't do it now, it's not the right time, they aren't strong enough, they need to take a break, work is so stressful, I don't understand, etc., etc., etc.

fear. we need new behaviors to replace the addictive behavior. As Dr. Dean Ornish states, a smoker won't give us their 24 reliable friends in each box. What's that song about "I drink alone? ""me and my Buddy-weiser". .. Also as 'Muricans we believe in the myth of self reliance so we are hesitant to ask for herp.
"The gift of desperation." Wow! So powerful. Thank you for your vulnerability and message.
Jamie, I'm just seeing this now, on New Year's Eve, the transition into 2024. Your talk is so inspiring and meaningful. You are so vulnerable and willing to speak about the hard things. That's not easy, so thank you for that. I teared up during your talk. I hope your talk gets seen by many more who struggle with food, as I have for years. This can help so many. I watch/read everything I can about addiction and disordered eating, hoping to find every nugget of wisdom, every strategy, every helpful comforting thought that just might get me on the right track. I have been "on track" at times, but went through some stressful times in the last few months which set me back into old ways. Thank you for saying what you've lived, so honestly.
Great talk, Jamie! Suppressing compulsive thoughts with accountable actions makes total sense.

You opened my eyes with this talk about the “secrets each of us hold”. Or as you so aptly put it “the secrets that hold on to us”. It is up to us to open up about these secrets and find a way to address them. Thank you for this.

Thanks Jamie for your message. So much of my story lies in yours as well. Conquering Bulimia and various Addictions. Daily Accountability is so important, and I find that I am still very Susceptible at times to my compulsive thought processing. Thank you for bringing relatability to the struggle so many of us face.

That was really helpful. I am ashamed about food and I get wrestled in the chocolate cookie aisle. 13:00 I like the idea of becoming the CEO of me. I'll have to figure out the biggest secret I am keeping....
