I grew up in Pampa, TX. The "coney" was a real treat. It was kinda like a football game atmosphere. Lots of people, crowded, LOTS of noise, delicious food & family. Miss it...

All these restaurants are dignified and tax paying law abiding places. Some but not all wealthy people hurt humans and society at large. These people are wealthy, in culture, family, and courage to defend their place in the USA and they gift soldiers to defend Liberty worldwide. Most soldiers are southern. Everyone in the world panhandles from the USA then youre saying.

Got news for this TCR talker I'm a native born Texan for over 70 years now and as a teenager we called certain hot dogs Coney's in downtown Houston and other places. Maybe the name originally came out of NYC at some point but Coney has been known in many places for even longer periods of time. Mama told me when she visited the Northern parts of our country and that includes NYC in the early thirties they had never heard what a hamburger was and had never much less eaten one. News spread very slowly back then. She had been eating hamburgers since she was a little girl she told me around 1921 or so. Try that on for size.

Detroiter here...Coney Island is in NYC, but the Coney Island Hotdog (with chili, mustard and onion) was popularized in Detroit. The originator used the name of the place in NYC to make it seem exotic to Detroiters. They would scoff at a Coney Dog, in actual Coney Island NYC.

In Rhode Island, this kind of thing is called a New York System Weiner, which is not found in NY. They are never called dogs and no one would know what a Coney is. . The Vatican City of weiners is Olneyville New York System in Providence. The style was created by Greek immigrants and thet used the NY theme to make it more glamorous.

Most folks don't know that the Coney is part of a bldg.that used to be the opera house..There are still bullet holes in the ceiling from the 1800s when people would get a little rowdy during a play or other entertainment..My kids grew up eating at the coney. My late husband was born and raised in Pampa.

The Lantern or something like that. I also have eaten at the Furr's Cafeteria there. Been a long time since I was up your way, back in my Halliburton days. Did you ever know Bill Franklin from Pampa? He is a friend of mine and lives down on the coast now. I hope to get back up there and get some more chili dogs and chili burgers some day. You take care!
