Concrete Water Tank Leak Fix - Fix Leaky Cracks When Full Of Water Part 1/ Energem

@Energem I could not find any good videos about fixing leaks in a cracked concrete water tank when it is full of water. I figured out how to do it myself and made my own video. Part 2 will be a video on re-coating the tank to make it look like new. Note: Use this guide at your own risk, Energem does not accept any responsibility or liability of any kind.

@noelrieusset718 my pleasure. Most videos out there assume the water will be emptied out of the tank before making repairs!

Update on my old concrete water tank leaks. Very small hair-line cracks kept appearing with damp patches on the outside wall. This is as a result of the old concrete breaking down on the inside with honeycombed patches forming and spots where the steel was rusting and forming small brown soft patches. It wasn't bad enough to replace the tank entirely so I decided to empty it out and apply a new internal water proof membrane. Before that on the inside walls I filled the honeycombed patches and large cracks with quick setting grout. After considering many options I decided the most cost effective membrane was 3 to 4 mm of 2:1 fine sand and cement grout with Xypex C-1000 cement additive and Xycrylic liquid additive, both to improve long term resistance to water penetration. I used a grout splatter gun to apply the grout evenly and a trowel to even out the bumps and smooth it off. I didn't need to do the floor of the tank because it already had some sort of epoxy coating and was still in good condition. I also plan to coat the outside of the tank with the same membrane to give an as-new sponge finish and improved water-proofing (Xypex say the grout on the outside will withstand negative hydrostatic pressure). If you are interested in the recipe and the quantities needed to get good coverage, leave a comment below.

Thanks alot for the video. Just tried a section on my cracked concrete tank. Was wondering if it has been successful for you a year later? Thanks again

Yes very successful. 2 or 3 out of about 20 cracks started to leak again within 12 months and needed follow up repair. Some cracks also began to extend beyond the repaired sections and also needed fixing. My tank has 40 mm thick walls with wire reinforcing. It's 25 years old and is gradually deteriorating. I'm guessing the level of success will depend on the age of the tank and how stable the structure is. In very old tanks, if water gets into the wall and rusts steel reinforcing, it may not be as successful.

@@energem133 Thanks for the update. My tank is quite old 100mm thick walls. Still weighing up which way to go. The section I did is already weeping a bit with minimal water. May be a losing battle for me with craks full vertical length which makes me think they may extend to the floor. Considering long term may just put a poly tank inside it and cut my losses. I appreciate all your info.

@@tonyfletcher1718 yes old concrete tanks can be a problem, mainly I think because if there is steel wire reinforcing in it, it begins to rust and expand and causes endless cracking. In that case the best solution I think is to empty out the tank, clean up the inside walls, fill any cracks with epoxy grout and apply a damp tolerant primer coat then waterproof membrane grout like Gripset 2P. If the outside walls are also sealed with grout then hopefully the rust will be deprived of oxygen and water and slow down or even stop. The cost of materials to do this will set you back about $800 to $1,000 for a standard 20,000 L tank.
