I like your technique. I was successful in making a larger pot with this method earlier in the year and I am planning on making a few smaller ones too. I typically will repurpose ceramic bowls that I get at thrift stores by drilling drain holes with a diamond hole cutting bit. This gives me an eclectic variety of shapes and sizes but they can be fragile, intolerant of freezing, and not always in the right size I need. I have also made some odd shaped pots by soaking an old towel in a thinner concrete mix and draping it over a form. Then I mold into the shape I want and add more concrete to by hand where needed, and imbed steel wire to reinforce it.
