I am an American descendant of ethnic Bulgarians from Thessaloniki (Solun), in the Greek (Aegean) section of Macedonia. I am close to 80, and remember that all of my Macedonian relatives, who were born between the 1860's and 1920's calling themselves Bulgarians. The Bulgarians in the Serbian/Yugoslav portion of Macedonia, known today as North Macedonia, were converted after 1945 by the Bulgar--hating communists ruling Tito's Yugoslavia into a new tribe, "Ethnic Macedonians."

I just spoke to my grandad, he was born in pirin Macedonia in 1942 and has always identified as Bulgarian. He went to work in Fyrom a decade ago and he was arrested for selling market fruits. The fyrom police took him in and asked him what kind of person he is, he said he is Bulgarian and they said, no, you are Macedonian and if you say you are Bulgarian again we will beat you to death. This is around 2011 in so called democratic fyrom. He complied with their demands and said he is not bulgarian and fled back to Bulgaria to not get killed. What this story is supposed to tell you is that Bulgarians face huge discrimination and threats even by north Macedonian authorities and that must change. Hopefully the French proposal forces through changes because north Macedonia can not enter the EU with its current policies towards Bulgarians

They are romanians who were brainwashed by soviets to think that they are moldovans and not romanians and make them to hate romanians. But after the fall of URSS they are now tought in shool the romanian history ( the truth) and they are start realising that they are one with romanians. There are still some movements supported in special by russian propaganda who still try to reject the truth about that moldovans are romanians but thanksfully they aren t do much things in order to create such problems as in North Macedonia. I hope you will fix that in the future, it ain t normal that people from the same kind to object they unitary ethno cultural identity and start hate each other.

No one asked the people IF they want to join the EU. And IF they accept all this humiliation and added demands, in order to join the EU. That is why there is no democracy. And this people protest because tehy DO NOT want to be in the EU. Also Bulgaria is negating Macedonian nation, and language (BG parliament resolution 2019). Bulgaria demands, Macedonian language not to enter as a language in the EU. Bulgaria forces it's nazionalistic hstoric views ( i.e. Macedonians did not exist before 1945, were bulgarians) on Macedonia, with EU veto blackmail. Bulgaria is using veto power as an oppressor with imperialistic and expansionistic 19th century dreams of taking over Macedonia.

Bulgarian state, DENIES Macedonian language and people. Bulgar state was convicted 16 times, for breaking basic human rights of Macedonian minority in Bulgaria, by the EU. Bulgarian minority is recognized in Macedonia, but the Bulgarians want to be mentioned in the constitution despite being like barely a thousand. Meanwhile Macedonians in Bulgaria are over 6.000.000 (six million) and they are not even recognized as a minority, let alone put in the constitution.

I have been to the Balkans including Macedonia a lot of times. Literally none of what you are saying is true. No Macedonian thinks he is Greek. They have distinct Macedonian names and surnames and speak a distinct mother slavic language which is the reason why they understand nearly all slavic languages but not vice versa, they have the key to slavic literacy, they are the godfathers of Russia, Bulgaria, Serbia etc when it comes to language and script. They have the richest culture in all of Balkan because they are mixture of two master cultures, Ancient Macedonian and old slavic Macedonian.

Bulgaria has never claimed that Macedonians do not exist. On the contrary, it was Serbia in the recent past that defined them as southern Serbs. And at the moment, the leader of the opposition, who leads the protests, gives interviews on Serbian television in pure Serbian, and at the protests in pure Bulgarian, he talks about how Bulgarians are fascists and Tatars. The only thing we have not agreed to is changing the identity of already dead historical figures.

Your comment here reminds me so much of Putin's speeches. I lived in Sofia for more than 10 years. Great city, wonderful nation but aggressiveness towards North Macedonians I've never understood. We don't need this in the EU. Bulgaria and Romania were accepted into the EU with all the unsolved problems (corruption, mafia, economic criminal) and now you are blocking North Macedonia which I think has a much higher readiness to join than Bulgaria has ever had. Having BG passports does not prove that the Macedonians feel Bulgarian. They admit that they do it for eventual financial prosperity. I have never met a Macedonian who has BG passport and said that he took the passport/nationality because he or his family expresses as Bulgarian(s). Never. Also, I have never met a Bulgarian (Bulgaroman) in my country of Macedonia, with or without Bulgarian nationality.

Ancient Macedonians were Greeks. This is beyond doubt and all well known scholars around the world accept it as a fact. These people are 100% Bulgarians whose individual identity as ‘North Macedonians’ was cultivated in the good old communist era. It is their right to be self determined as long as they respect the territory of Greece and Bulgaria, the history of Greece , and the fact that they are of Bulgarian origin. Following these admissions they are most welcome in the EU. Otherwise they are free to promote whatever they want and believe whatever they want but outside the EU

Macedonian is a desirable identity due to its historical significance, but the problem is that the historical Macedonians are basically Greek/Hellenic, while those Macedonians are clearly Slavic, as they speak pretty much the same language as the Bulgarians, and the only thing which connects them to the historical Macedonia is the land which their ancestors have conquered from the Byzantine-Empire, unless they claim to be a mix of both.

What is now called Macedonia has officially been a part of Bulgaria since 837ish and even before that one of Kubrat's sons Kuber established his people there. That region has played an integral part to my country's existence. Bulgaria has given enough blood and lived through 2 national catastrophes for these people There is no macedonian country, there is no macedonian language and most importantly there are NO macedonian people. Even after 70/80 years of mass propagandas and acts of violence against people who call themselves Bulgarians the majority still have Bulgarian blood runnin through their veins. They even use a Bulgarian dialect as their language lmao. We dont need subtitles to understand them or vice versa A fabricated proxy country that only hates its own origin and has no future

Ancient Macedonians as I know were Hellenics, even the Ancient Macedonians were the spreader of Hellenistic culture to South-Central Asia and created Indo-Hellenistic Group. I am Kashmiri people, my land was colonised by Ancient Macedonians and Seleucid Empire, both of them were Hellenic people, that's why most of ethnicities in the Kashmir region including my ethnicity were influenced by ancient Hellenic culture, Persian culture and Indian culture, created the unique amalgamation of the three. There is no such thing as North Macedonians. International news outlets should be more sensitive towards this issue. With the Prespa Agreement between North Macedonia and Greece, Macedonian is the nationality of the people. The name change is to differentiate the Republic from the Roman Macedonia, whose territories also lie in Greece and Bulgaria. While Macedonians and Bulgarians do share a lot of history till 19th century, the nation development took different turns. Yes, Yugoslavia went crazy with erasing the Bulgarian identity of some heroes that Macedonians celebrate but Bulgaria needs to realize that a significant number of people didn’t see them as liberators in World War 2.

How about we ask Turkey about this - they occupied the land for centuries. Surely they know who lived in the region. Were the people there Greek? Bulgarian? Serbian? It's funny how "Macedonians" don't know who they are and also don't know who us - Bulgarians - are :) They call us "Tatars", but Bulgarians come from the Huns - From the youngest son of Atila. @@77belts I cant really classify it as an actual country with it having the population of a middle sized town lol And its not part of the EU Besides, the official year of the creation of Bulgaria is 681 but there have been war treaties found between a bulgarian ruler and Roman emperor that date well over 200 years earlier than that. Such treaties could only be made between actual countries Bulgaria has existed for far longer and has a much richer history but the powers that be really dont want the truth to come out. where do you read it is not recognized? There was a census, it is recognized 3500 bulgarians live in Macedonia. No EU or UN body has seen any issue of bulgarian minority rights not being respected in Macedonia. It's not like that, only because some politician in sofia said so you know. On the other hand 16 court rulings of EU against Bulgaria for not recognizing human rights of Macedonians in Bulgara. Why bulgaria don't want to recognize Macedonian minorities over there?

Today they don‘t accept the Macedonian nation because they have own „regions“ called Macedonia. Macedonia as a state does not exist in any historical source from 148 BC to 1944. Samuel's father is a Bulgarian boyar - Nicholas and his Armenian mother Ripsimia. Macedonians need to recognise Bulgarian minorities in their constitution and meet our other four demands if they want to join the European Union. It is unacceptable for a country like North macedonia with so much hate towards bulgaria to be allowed to join the EU. They must recognise truth and tolerance is necessary to join the EU.

The French proposal has been widely debated and quoted in the news. One does not actually need to read the whole of it, just understand the key points. And doubt most people will understand what it means and consequesnces, of the diplomatic-state level layer lingo in the proposal. Therefore it's mostly useless to ask if they have read it. Key points are 1. Macedonia makes concessions (pays) in advance, not at the end, while Bulgaria can keep blocking whit more demands. Meaning concessions are in vane, for free. 2. This does not mean the end. It most likely mean even more dead end. 3. Bilateral agreement, becomes for the first time EU criteria. "History" at Bulgarian will becomes an EU membership criteria. Unlike for any other country so far. Dangerous precedent. Also incredible power for blackmails, vetos, given at bulgarian will. Meaning they can veto and press for history at their will in Macedonia. Many international European experts, Florian Bieber and Ulf Brunnbauer among others have expressed their concerns about the "french proposal".

@@d3r4g45 the french proposal states that bulgarians must be recognised as a minority in the north macedonian constitution as part of eu membership talks for skopje. thats it. it requires 2/3 of ur parliament to agree to it. bulgaria will block u again if u dont fulfill our other demands, but at least u make progress with this proposal. yes bulgaria wants u to work on the historical commission but that is not part of the french proposal. but it looks like u guys want to continue with ur hate against bulgarians and ur fake history in ur textbooks

Atleast the makedonia name is yours, as the Aegean Macedonia is purely called Macedonia and all claims to ancient Macedonian history were dropped. I see loads of nationalists here unfortunately. But as a Bulgarian this is getting out hand . Bulgarian and Macedonian Parlament haven’t done anything good in this situation . They haven’t come to a good agreement . And causing so much pain and suffering between the two people . Just to clear something out . Macedonians are not being hunted and abused in Bulgaria same way Bulgarian are not getting hurt and abused in north macedonia . A bunch of nationalists control us and it’s a problem . Time for the 2 people to rise and knock these tyrants out .

@@d3r4g45 macedonia is not a country. north macedonia has not met the criteria in the friendship treaty so bulgaria vetoed fyrom needs to change to stop hate against bulagria. bulgaria does not want fyrom to change their lanuage status. thats a lie. bulgaria just wont recognise the macedonian lanuage for now fyrom refuses to stop hate against bulgarians
