Concert on the bells of Saint Stephen in Pallanza during a rainstorm
The church of Saint Stephen is one of the oldest in Verbania (Italy), having been built in the early Middle Ages as the oratory of the main church of Intra on Lake Maggiore. The place was already inhabited from the time of the Roman Empire, from which period a stone is preserved today inside one of the main altars. In 1572, the church passed to a new parish, resulting in the reconstruction of the entire building in a very solemn Baroque style in the 17th century. The new stone bell tower was built in place of the previous one, retaining a bell from 1580. Four more bells were added to this bell in 1842, completing the concert in A Major. Nineteenth-century bells are very rare, as the foundry had only recently been established.

One of my best friends invited me, before returning to England, to visit some historic bell towers. In this video he is playing the concert from the computer, while I am filming the bells during a small hurricane on the lake, with wind and rain and freezing temperatures. After this film I had a cough and fever for four days, but I am happy to have said goodbye to one of the best bell ringers I know. The concert is the traditional technique of the main festivals, Luca plays it very well because he is very talented.
After the land was abandoned, with the arrival of Charlemagne the area became rich again, with the development of many churches in the 9th century. The church was rebuilt in 1020 with a beautiful Romanesque nave, to which a second nave was added in the 13th century. The beautiful old Romanesque two-nave building was completely rebuilt in Baroque style, with beautiful paintings and pictures added until the end of the 18th century. Above the entrance portal of St Stephen's, the eye is caught by the painted parapet of the choir loft, with a beautiful wooden organ case built in 1620.
