Concert of bells from the main church in the Trenno district
The church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was built in the mid 17th century on an old Gothic oratory, replacing the main Romanesque church in Trenno (Milan). The Baroque building only preserved the former Gothic red-brick bell tower, which is very elegant and older than the rest of the structure. The elegant tower has five bells, tuned to the musical scale of E flat major, cast in 1919. During the Second World War, the two largest bells were requisitioned, then paid for by the state as new in 1948. The second of the recast bells is actually out of tune with the rest of the concert, which is not spoilt as the other four are of excellent casting.

The bells are rung using the traditional concert technique, which consists of bringing the bells upright and then bringing them down at precise and regular intervals to form musical scales. The sound of the bells spreads across the countryside on Sunday mornings, helped by the heavy rain that has been raging in the city for a fortnight.
The first mention of a church in the neighbourhood dates back to 1017, although a manuscript codex from the Bishop of Worms, which is housed in the world's main library, mentions an important priest in Trenno as early as 950. The church was to become the main church in the area, remaining from the 13th century until the mid-16th century the only one with a baptistery where the Christian sacraments could be administered. The church would change shape, move to a new building, but would remain the central church at least until 1930, when the new boundaries were drawn and the suburb became part of the city of Milan. The chapel dedicated to the Magi houses an exceptional altarpiece by a German painter, housed in a frame made entirely of gold.
