I dont particularly hate math it’s just a bit difficult. Same goes for programming. I dont hate coding but i just suck at it. I am a CS major but thinking of doing IT for that easy route and maybe would find a full time position in Software Engineer if my programming skills gotten better

I love you! thank you for your insights, I'm researching which should I take between these two as I am planning to go back to school and get a degree. I didn't skip the ads you deserve it! I have a huge background in working with tech and was fascinated with it and I think getting a degree and knowing more about will help me advance my future career.

Currently in my 2nd year of BSIT, I plan to focus on networking because advanced maths and programming just seems hard for me, plus I've always been more fascinated into the hardware aspect of computers. Do you think I could still easily find a job just retaining my full knowledge on networking and basic python (for networking) and maybe DBMS stuffs and maybe retaining just the most basic knowledge and syntax on C and C++??

Very helpful video, information technology is more imerged with customer service, bussiness, and computers. I found very true with what you said in the video: information technology is for interacting with people and computers. Something studying wont really teach you is how customer service in information technology is linked.

I will add that I'm starting an IT degree right now and the requirement for students was that they had to do up to pre-calc II and take statistics. I did up to calc II and they also want me to do discrete mathematics. I hope that informs someone interested c:

I agree IT majors prob. need to talk more and I'm pretty bad at it but I'm sure there are jobs for IT that aren't talkative intensive. I looked at Computer Science Majors you 100% need to take calculus which wasn't for me

Figure out if you like it. Take courses from various providers. See you like. I have training in my descriptions on some of my videos for software/it/cybersecurity

I've noticed that some colleges have "computer technology" instead of "information technology" are these essentially the same thing?

Hey Nicole! I have been watching your videos and I am in the process of changing careers into tech from the oil and gas industry. Your videos have been so helpful and beneficial to making a decision. I am deciding between CS and IT degree from WGU.. I want to end up doing DevOps / Cloud and eventually go into upper executive management. I also want to support my family and live comfortably but I keep hearing that IT has low paying jobs and that CS is better?!? Let me know what you think in your expert opinion of the industry!

Cs is much higher starting, but if you become good it you can make well over 6 figures, just as you can with CS. So it’s all in preference

I am getting the impression that the difference between a computer science graduate and an information technology graduate is the difference between a scientist and a skilled technician. Is anyone interested in shooting me down in flames? :)

Definitely go with the BSIT first yo. IT is a very versatile field, it teaches you everything tech related from hardware, network, security, operating systems, scripting and some basic programming. Since you now know the basic understanding of how technology works, you can definitely get any certifications that relates to a tech field that you may want to work with software dev/eng, cloud engineer, cybersecurity etc. I’m telling you yo, don’t limit yourself in a cybersecurity degree

the amount of cuts you've made mid sentence is making this hard to follow, thank you regardless, just a little thing I noticed.

Put it like this, IT (Information Technology) is the Car Mechanic while CS (Computer Designer) is the Car Designer. Both are crucial and unique in their own way.

I am OK at solving math problems, but I'm not a sharp person! people say I should pursue CS as a major, no matter how hard it is, cause it has better job opportunities. But I feel like I'm going to struggle. I think I would enjoy IT more. Am I being lazy?!

I think your comments about CS people not needing communication skills are based on stereotypes, and are untrue. In fact, I think I have a good perspective as someone who did IT during high school and college, got a degree in Computer Engineering, and spent the first half of my career doing typical software development tasks. Today, I probably spend more of my time these days doing "Engineering DevOps" work that probably falls more on the IT end of the spectrum. There are good communicators and bad communicators in both IT and software engineering roles, and I'd be hard-pressed to say which one I thought on average were better communicators. All the engineers I know spend a significant chunk of their day on IM, directly collaborating with other engineers, or in meetings. Our internal performance ratings put a heavy emphasis on interpersonal skills, including communication, and its not uncommon for engineers to be promoted based on good communication skills, or likewise, held back from promotion because they can't communicate succinctly, clearly, or respectfully enough. Big engineering products, like the ones I work on, take thousands of people, communicating across companies and groups that have different motivations and priorities. That's a lot of collaboration, idea sharing, technical persuasion, and even internal politics that require ever-increasing levels of sophisticated communication as people progress in their career. I can't entirely fault you for saying what you do. There is a stereotype of programmers as sitting in cubicles, mumbling to themselves and being socially awkward. Movies like Office Space and television shows like Silicon Valley capitalize on this caricature. But its harmful when people reiterate these tropes. Not only to the people in these career fields who have to learn the hard way that technical abilities are really only one aspect to a growing career, but it has been shown to be a large factor as to why there's such a gender disparity in this field, as study show that women, more often than men, pass over this career field due to its social stereotype. I appreciate a lot of the other parts with the differences. But your assertion that communication skill are unimportant for CS graduates is absolutely wrong, and I think even harmful.

I have a computer engineering degree and was very good at math. I hate IT 😂. I hate talking to people. I'm an introvert. Our company force us to refer to non IT coworkers as customers. Someone with an A+ with no degree is treated better than someone who has a computer degree because the manager who bullshitted his way up to his position only has an A+ with no degree 😂.
