When you compost something you mix it regularly and it's under the soil which makes it more moist and damp which also aids in the decomposing process. So 90 days if you actually composted it... Leaving it outside to the elements isn't composting but it actually did break down quite a bit considering you didn't do anything.

FYI, composting is not just sitting it on top of some soil. Compost has bacteria, insects and enzymes in it, that would break this straight down if in the compost itself, or buried under composting plant materials.

When something is composted, it doesn’t normally just sit on top of the soil with two pins in it. It normally gets shredded up and added to the other compost and mixed in, So it’s actually in contact with the micro organisms and worms in the soil, and gets a little water with the rest of the compost.

That surprised me with how much it broke down. That makes me think if you actually threw it into a compost bin or oils that it would actually compost properly. That’s pretty cool.

While that isn't exactly what compostable actually means, I'm willing to bet that there would have been little to nothing left of that thing had they put in even that minimal bit of effort.

You gotta bury it. We have a Lomi and compostable plastics often come out still plasticky but so long as you stir and mix it into the mulch pile, it'll be gone in short order, the Lomi speeds up the process of turning it all into soil but sometimes it needs to be in a compost pile for a bit longer for organisms to fully break down.

Cool and yes when we compost, we start by breaking items up and mixing it into a pile.

Becomes soil when composted, not just left outside on top of soil. Gotta bury it with veg scraps to get the bacterial and insect activity to make the transformation into actual soil over time.

From the looks of it it was on its way to turning despite not being buried properly. The plastic ones from the past wouldnt even be damaged I guess it works. Its definately an improvement.

It has done exactly what it says. It’s formed mould which in turn will feed the bugs in the soil in turn with improve your soil quality.

Compostability relies on moisture and heat which can only occur if the item is buried. It also may involve insect or bacterial action found if buried in the soil.

This is akin to laying bulbs sideways on the top of the soil and saying they just don't grow well. It needs more than that covering it, or it's only interacting with maybe 30% of it's surface

It did pretty good for only sitting on top of the soil instead of being moist and buried like it’s supposed to. Apart of the process of being broken down is the insects and bacteria that can work on it when it’s wet.

Your experiment was an example of showing us it's biodegradable. So treat yourself to another lunch, get another container and follow this research, The primary difference between compostable and biodegradable is that compostable products require a specific setting in order to break down, whereas biodegradable products break down naturally. Typically composting is a faster process, but only under the right conditions. Requires mixing in soil.

Even as litter, it would break down within that time. The wind would blow it and it would get torn. It would blow into a pile of leaves or something. Way better than plastic or styrofoam!!!

  • @NaturalMackie

You have to mix with soil when composting. Not just set it on top. I doubt it would still break down completely, but it would be a lot more broken down.
