The Morrowind main theme has always been my favorite. It so wonderfully captures the strange, subdued, and at times surreal, story from that game. I love it over the loud bombast of the Skyrim theme. The Morrowind theme and Tristram from the first ‘Diablo’ are two of my go-to tracks whenever I run RPGs.

You are probably more spot on about your observation of the Oblivion theme than you realize, haha. The main plot of Oblivion revolves around Oblivion Gates opening in the world of mortals and an invasion from the Daedra coming from the Plane of Oblivion known as the Deadlands, which pretty much look just like the classic vision of Hell, with lava lakes and everything.

Deep lore time: the song is actually the creation myth of the elder scrolls universe. Nothing, then the drum beat of the Heart of Lorkhan then the introduction of life and people and triumph. In the story Lorkhan, one of the formless first spirits, came upon a revelation alone in the void. He then created the world with other spirits but it turns out it was a trap and the world ate the spirits who worked on it. In retaliation the spirits killed and dismembered Lorkhan and shot his heart into red mountain. This heart is central to the plot of morrowind as it's the heart of creation

So in Morrowind you're the reborn hero of an ancient mythical age. The story revolves around interacting with God's on Earth who in one way or another, betrayed you in your past life many thousands of years ago. The major theme of the game is resolution to old wrongs and fixing ancient mistakes, as well as stopping an old evil from your past. So it is like a wrap up of a mythological tale that had been put on hold until you were reborn again. ( of course you don't know you were the reincarnation of this hero until late in the game ). In Oblivion you're a nobody caught up in the final days of a stable Empire as demons from the world of Oblivion invade, kill the emperor and start sacking cities. You rise to the occasion to put an end to it, and while you stop it in the end, the Empire is left fractured and without a leader.

All of the Elder Scrolls themes give me the shivers, in a positive manner, when I hear them. I am most accustomed to the Skyrim theme because it's thr most recent and the game has the best mechanics to date (and I'm a game developer), but since I started the Elder Scrolls series with Morrowind, this gives me the most nostalgic feelings. And your interpretation of what the music tells about the game is not far off! Morrowind is reformation, Oblivion is Revolution, and Skyrim is Ragnarøk, or actually the prevention of it if you play the main quest line (which I have only done 3 times out of the hundreds of times I've started the game). The theme is not really just played over and over again, there is somewhere around 45 minutes of Music that is cycled and contextualized in the game of Morrowind with multiple combat and exploration tracks cycled throughout the game (I just know this particular number because I listen to the Morrowind soundtrack when playing games that have a weak soundtrack of their own). But the same motif is used in all of them with more or less variation... But the Ouroboros myth is foundational to the Elder Scrolls universe and the music definitely supports this

I dont know if you will notice that Atals but... This song is perfect for Morrowind. Literally perfect. It was a journey to an unknown, alien land which held its secrets tight under lock and key and "greeted" newcomers with customs and landscapes totally alien to them... and to us. Going to Morrowind i expect orcs and elves... well i found some elves and some orcs but what i didnt expected were bugs! Huge bugs people rode on. Huge mushrooms people lived in. Flying pterodactyl-like beasts. Floating land-jellyfishes. Glowing plants. It was like stepping into some obscure land... At first i was kinda scared to leave the town, it all seemed so bizarre. Yeah, i was more impressionable and much younger back then but still! So this OST is basically a greeting, a welcome to a fantasy unlike you ever seen! Grand, unknown, living by its own rules and customs and opening majestically (if deadly) to all newcomers... Although not very welcoming. Skyrim and Oblivion are great but nothign quite beats the "Wait... is that a huge ARMORED FLEA we supposed to travel on like in a cart?!"

I don't know how many people here know of Falcom and their games. But It would be cool for you to react to some of the soundtracks featured in their games. It's really hard to choose which ones as most are pretty good soundtracks. I'll give two options as both are my favourites. You can pick at random if you are only going to pick one. 1. Unfathomed Force from The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki 2. Silver Will from The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Morrowind has a lot of factions, many of which have some pretty solid footholds and existences - though, the threat is more of a rebellion against that peace via a betrayal of the past - but, I always felt inspired to look into the sky in that game because of the theme

Watching this video got me to thinking: You might enjoy the main theme to Dragon Age Inquisition by Trevor Morris. Like the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim theme it features a powerful choir that carries the melody but the other instruments have a lot going on too. Trevor Morris' theme has a bit different flavor too: hope mixed with power, resolution, and adventure but also with a measure of pain/loss and desperation. If you like it, I'd also recommend "Journey to Skyhold" and "Lost Elf Theme" by Trevor Morris from the same game for its similarly complex array of emotions. :)

One thing that's really cool about the original Morrowind theme, is that Michael Kirkbride (the guy who's pretty much responsible for all the reaaaaally trippy, schizophrenic lore in the game) draws parallels between the notes in the song itself and the setting's creations myths - being that music and tones are something that tend to touch on the fabric of reality itself within the lore, it's quite fitting!

Morrowind will always take the cake with me... but until now? I never noticed how great Skyrim’s opening theme elevated the ... “melody” haha. I think I’m biased towards Morrowind because I played it when it released (I had to build a PC when I was 10) sooo the work put in made it so much sweeter when I succeeded.. it’s still awesome.
