Fun to see the reaction to my first song request! The instrumental and vocal performances are so well performed, so pure, and the simplicity of having few layers give the transitions and small accents so much impact in my opinion. I'll definitely agree with liking VOH more than Old Stories though. VOH is very energetic, more aggressive, more desperate and synthetic. Old stories is more innocent, simplistic, calm, curious and natural/organic. I think these differences, aswell as the intensity and direction of the emotion being expressed, makes VOH a more interesting and entertaining standalone song, but both songs are amazing at what their intended usecase is. "They both retain the same yearning, longing theme throughout, but they are expressed in radically different ways. Old stories is a more intimate song and pours the feelings inside, while VOH is a spear that pierces your heart and pours the sentiment outwards." Thats a very fun and visual way of describing these songs.

Kevin Penkin said this about the madeup language "We looked into qualities from languages such as German and Icelandic, but sung it in a way that could represent a language of the Abyss."

this song reminds me of every fail that have happend in my life and is like a scar for my mind. I keep that bad memory, that horrible feeling in my heart and head to remember that and be better, it's like a sign about that i could be better. At the end of this music i can feel the void that is drowning me down, and in this void.. in this abyss u can feel that u have to be better and lift that weight on your shoulder. you know if u fail yourself one more time and then.. u fall down to the bottom.

Same! I get that similar vibe from some of the Vinland Saga melodies as well. I think it's that "Icelandic" feel of this type of music between orchestra and using nicher European instruments.

Ah yes, one of my favorites from all the MiA ost. A soft, patient, and sincere track. I think my favorite part is the descending melody (I don't know if that's the right term), but it gives me a feeling of falling or losing things. I enjoy listening to this when I'm introspecting on things.

I love your commentary, it always adds something new to my understanding of the song. And I love Old Stories so much. It's the track that helped me cry for the first time in so long. I wanted to do it, but just couldn't before. It will always be special to me. Combined with the story of Vueko and Irumyuui, it evokes feelings in me that I just can't put into words. I'm not even sure such words exist. It's like homesickness for the home you never had.

I find myself liking songs that have made up languages more because I find myself feeling the emotion of the piece more than those who have real languages that I understand. VOH, Prushka Sequence, Old Stories, Belaf's Lullaby, and Ouni all from Made in Abyss are the ones that I really find myself feeling the emotions more. I will add that Gravity from Made in Abyss does use a real language other than English in it. I believe Icelandic(?) don't quote me on that but the song also gets the people to feel the emotions but not as well as those without a real language. I find that those that have made up languages don't distract the mind with trying to understand what is being said and instead feeling the emotion that the composer is trying to make us the listener feel. In this case Kevin Penkin is making us feel this sense of longing throughout the piece while also feeling hope. If I recall when this song is played in the anime it is in the beginning when the people are going into the abyss for the first time after being on the water. I may be misremembering as it has been a year since I watched the 2nd season of MiA. I do hope that later if you haven't already can react to Faputa (which wasn't played at all in the anime which is a shame as it encapsulated her entire character) and Ouni.

Im exactly the same, i love made up languages. When i listen to songs with real lyrics, i feel like what is said really narrows what the meaning of the song is. But if the language is made up, the lyrics can mean absolutely anything. Its up to the listener to interpret what the song is all about, and the listener has to understand the story being told only from the emotions expressed by the music itself. Thats something i really love about a lot of Kevin Penkin's music.

Maybe that's why this track hurts me more than VOH does. VOH is emotional but it's outwards and also kinda epic-sounding. Old Stories is intimate and sometimes it feels like it's bottled up. It feels like an inner struggle, a war you fight within yourself. And that just speaks so much to me. But yeah. Even though this is still my favorite in the OST collection, I also think VOH was under-utilized. Takeshi Saito did such a wonderful job there. I didn't look up the lyrics but the language might be like the one in the anime. There's an actual language they made for the anime. Which I love because it shows how much they put into the world-building. It would be kinda genius if they used *that* language for this track.

In general this is one of those shows where the atmosphere absolutely engulfs you. The music reflects that too especially in Season 2, it feels like you're reading a very alof old story book (pun intended) and getting fully immersed. It kinda reminds me of Aria actually, another fantastic Anime with great music but on the nicher side.

For some context, while this track was used a couple of times during MiA's 2nd Season, I think the most iconic was during the season finale where it plays over an extended flashback of a character reminiscing about the more enjoyable parts of her backstory...

this among many other songs in the soundtrack makes me emotional so easily its crazy. im so captivated by the entirety of Made In Abyss and i love seeing people share that sentiment. im also not typically an emotional person, so for something to bring that out of me is seriously impressive to me. i cant stop watching things about Made In Abyss since i finished it a couple weeks ago, im so glad it exists, and i almost feel like i enjoy it TOO much.. so im glad other people feel at least somewhat similar. what an incredible soundtrack and series.

I do believe the made up language of MiA has icelandic as a core part of it's structure, so picking up norwegian and icelandic in the vocals are pretty much spot on.

Made in Abyss is beautiful, wonderful, haunting, and painful to watch. It doesn’t pull punches and will grind your heart (not an understatement it touches on seriously dark subjects). But it’s worth every minute of watching. It’s a unique telling of main characters going on an adventure they should not be going on. And the world treats them accordingly.

He had worked with kinema citrus in the past before made in abyss. HE did the OST for Norn 9 anime in 2016. He also did work for the original norn 9 VN with nobuo uematsu. When talks of an anime adaptation came up, they wanted to bring penkin back in the fold. He also did the trailer music for OVA "under the dog" in 2014(eventually released in 2016). These projects were done by kinema citrus. Since then, they've been on very good terms and are always happy to work with him
