MAKING THE MOTHER OF ALL FINAL-BOSS THEMES HERE ATLAS, CANT FRET OVER EVERY SINGLE NOTE.
I love that the most ridiculous thing in this game isn't a Liberian cyborg ninja dueling to the death with a Brazilian samurai with the Southwestern sun in the background or flipping a 3 story tall mech, but having a politician that literally fights for what he believes in even though he knows it'll cost him his life.

That's the interesting thing about Armstrong. I don't think he knew he was going to die. I think he legitimately believed he was going to kill Raiden. Yet, when Raiden did beat him, he faced and accepted his defeat. Even if he was convinced he wouldn't die, Armstrong was ready to do so for his beliefs.
@SpartanJ113

@@roguescorner9042 Armstrong knew Raiden would either come to join him, or would kill him. He never believed he would be able to defeat Raiden in combat, but by the end he did break through and leave a mark on him. The whole point of this theme is drawing parallels between Armstrong and a Raiden, showing how deep down they believe the same things “maybe we’re both the same” but for different reasons, and that they’re products of the environment that created them “but nobody is to blame” The difference is that Raiden still believes that killing Armstrong will change something, while Armstrong knows that “violence breeds violence” and offers Raiden peace instead, knowing that continuing the chain of violence gets them nowhere. To both of them “new life will be born beneath the bloodstained sand” which is Raiden convincing himself that killing Armstrong will have a lasting impact, while Armstrong is thinking the same thing, but about how his own death is inevitable, yet he can pass his legacy onto Raiden, birthing new life and purpose into him.

@@SpartanJ113 I think you’re glorifying armstrong a bit too much there. He mighta accepted his death the moment it happened, but he definitely did not think he’d lose to raiden. He’s a politician, not some honor-bound warrior. Dude has, just like raiden said, lived his life pretty comfortably and repeatedly avoided endangering himself for others’ sakes. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t he skip getting drafted on purpose, and additionally shit on raiden by saying he’ll die and be forgotten, while Armstrong will go on to “fix the world”? He definitely was not banking on raiden winning. Lastly, I’d recommend checking out the Tanya boss from Library of Ruina, specifically the pre-battle cutscene. She’s just like Armstrong in the sense that she just wants a world where strength is everything, and the strong rule the weak. Her opponent is a character I think you should look into, they’ve got plenty of development through the game’s prequel and this one, and her dialogues are surprisingly insightful for the kind of person she is. Check it out!
One of the best OST's of all time, so energetic and meaningful!

You have to do The Only Thing I Know For Real next! I would suggest you play the game. It is short and sweet. The thing is, this is not Raiden's (followed your wrath) song, it is Armstrong's (carved his own path) and when you combine the songs with the characters and the gameplay, prepare to be blown away.

There's a debate that says that while this is Armstrong's boss battle song, the song is actually about Raiden.
@77professional
Жыл бұрын
@@roguescorner9042 It is answered pretty definitively when Armstrong tells Raiden at the end to "carve your own path" as if he had refused to do so and only one of them followed his "wrath".

@@77professional The lyric still works the other way around. Raiden did carve his own path in life. While Armstrong in a sense followed his wrath. What is his philosophy if not wrathful and chaotic.
@foofgam220

Actually, other way around. It is Raiden’s song. Evidenced by Jetstream Sam’s DLC, where the his boss theme is Collective Consciousness. Also at the end of the fight, Armstrong tells Raiden to “carve his own path.” Another thing: when the fight concludes, Armstrong tells Raiden "We're not so different... you... and I," which is in direct contrast to the song, which says "Standing here, I realize you were just like me."
@TheDeathOmen

The song is definitely Raiden’s song, the bit where the lyrics point out that the other followed their wrath which clear as day is referring to Armstrong from Raiden’s perspective.

Which makes it even more poetic because the previous song that plays for the final boss Collective Consciousness is what Raiden initially perceives Armstrong to be which is just another corrupt politician but when It Has To Be This Way comes in, Raiden realizes that Armstrong is a lot like him. You may find it crazy that this is the theme of the most amazing political and economical debate in media. But all of Rising is crazy. This is just the final level of batshit insanity and not only does it work, but its message is actually pretty deep and yet people are diving deeper into it than a majority of Metal Gear Games. It may have to do with its continuation on the themes of Sons of Liberty, or it may just have to do with finding common ground in the now between this world and our own fragile society reliant on memes and social media. Almost every hardcore metal gear fan I knew going into college hated this game and thought of it as a joke and money grabbing bullshit. They are probably dying slowly right now knowing its constantly reviving with deep discussions while people realize crazy anime bullshit existed in Metal gear since the beginning. Rising was just the most embracing of it and because of that we got phosiphies that rivaled Solidus out of what was initially a meme. I'm not joking. There may as well be lectures on Armstrong's speeches and their moralities as well as the lasting impact his last fight leaves on Raiden with his words and acceptance of defeat with congratulations and no ill will. Giving Raiden his blessing to carry on in his own way as he proved to be the better of the two in his might makes right mentality. Its literally amazing how people are picking apart the philosophical ideals of a Platinum game almost ten years after its initial release. Thats almost as crazy as the fact there are still people playing it for the very first time to this day and having a fucking blast.
