Ruinele cetății „Tropaeum Traiani” sunt localizate în exteriorul localității Adamclisi, la sud-vest de monumentul triumfal. Cercetările arheologice în zonă au început în 1882, sub îndrumarea arheologului Grigore Tocilescu. Acesta a fost momentul inaugurării primului șantier românesc de arheologie. În anul 1977, a fost deschis și Muzeul „Tropaeum Traiani”, un muzeu de sit care expune vestigii din cetatea romană, metopele originale ce ilustrează scene de luptă, piese din ceramică, podoabe și alte elemente de sculptură.

[EN] The ruins of the “Tropaeum Traiani” fortress are located outside the town of Adamclisi, southwest of the triumphal monument. Archaeological research in the area began in 1882, under the guidance of archaeologist Grigore Tocilescu. This was the moment of the inauguration of the first Romanian archeology site. In 1977, the “Tropaeum Traiani” Museum was also opened, a site museum that exhibits vestiges of the Roman citadel, original metopes depicting battle scenes, ceramic pieces, ornaments and other sculptural elements.
