Just for future reference, you can grind the wood and metal pieces of the handle at the same time. That will give you a closer fit for less trouble.

The written truth
As a retired machinist who has seen more accidents that I wanted to see I would strongly recommend you start clamping little pieces of steel into a good toolmakers vise. Clamp the vise to the drill press table, so if while drilling the drill "grabs" the piece you are drilling won't injure you.
Nate, that knife is *gorgeous*! I love damascus steel, and you picked the perfect blade design to show off Kyle's work. The green burl for the handle was an excellent choice; complements the blade without overwhelming it.
Miss hearing "welcome back to the workshop" on tkor, but glad to see you're still going strong!
I love ow you say 'meteorite' in such a casual way, not giving away how insanely expensive it is.
I enjoyed this. It's a beautiful knife. Great job Nate. Yes I want to see more.
So beautiful! I really enjoy watching you create things; you explain it all very well which helps me - who knows nothing at all about these things - understand every step of the process.
3:40 🤣"i need to go POINT EIGHT MILLIMETERS LARGER STILL" Mr caliper over here🤣
Came out awesome! Beautiful patterns throughout!
That green stained burl is super cool. Where do you buy that? More interestingly, how can I make it? I've tinkered with wood stains but never seen anything that could penetrate very deeply. Vacuum chamber experiment time?
@NFTI

It's usually made with a very thin resin like the brand Cactus Juice, with lots of added dye, in a vacuum chamber.

Beautiful piece of work Nate
That is a truly epic knife! I love it. Beautifully done!
Amazing stuff. Thanks for the videos.
Great Video! This took me down the knife building rabbit hole!
Thanks Nate. This was WAY better than watching random stuff. Nice work!!
Absolutely Beautiful!
That came out soooo nice. Wow
Haters gonna hate.. the knife is awesome but right off the bat you were talking about hidden tangs and the pic was of a through tang! 🤪 great build and it’s awesome Kyle was involved 👍🏻👍🏻
This video is thoroughly enjoyable to watch! I want to make knives. Please do make more knives and such for me to watch.
It looks awesome
Didn't think I was going to like the green, came out fantastic

Green is my fave color so I love the handle!
Glad I found your channel; I was wondering what happened to you being on TKOR (I watched the explanation video first). If I hadn't found Kyle's video, creating the Damascus, which I had missed, I would still be wondering. Great looking project. I am thinking of taking up knife making, as a hobby, once I retire from the military (within the next year). This gets me excited to begin.

Not really, Damascus steel should not be used with acidic substances, as the carbon steel is still subject to corrosion

Great knife !
That knife looks super good
perfect i like the Damascus and the blade
At first I wasn't feeling the handle but after the polish and wax it looks like jade. So cool.
That is a beautiful knife 🥰
you made a deserving handle and blade for damascus. i would be hyped man. congrats!!!!
I could watch this all day
nice. enjoyed the vid Nate
really love all the different and unique techniques you show in this, all come together to make a beautiful knife
Great knife Nate. Quick question, Where can I find that bolt nut thing you used on the end of the tang?
Hello Nate, thank you for taking me / us through the process rather than just showing the highlights. It's a rare opportunity to see what goes in the head of a craftsman while they are doing their craft. I have some feedback. I have never used a power tool to grind metal, so I don't know what it takes to do it. Saying this as an observer. I think the pieces of the handle could blend in better. Right now they look like separate pieces stamped in a factory and assembled in a production line. Don't get me wrong, they all look beautiful individually. But I think it would look better if the edges blended together making it look like a single piece. Thanks again for the video.

This is me attempting what's called a "museum fit," which is a very deliberate style. I'm not going to claim I pulled it off perfectly, but it was intentional!

Amazing!
great knife, handle is amazing :)
hey nate if you are going to use a full piece of sand paper use a sheet of glass and stuck the sand paper to it with hair spray you will get a better flatter sand
Should check out Neil Kamimura's video on coffee etching. Less science and just what works. The simplified Hawaiian instructions.
This and the meteorite blade are my favorites. I've always wondered just how dangerous those sanding belts are, I'm guessing "shiny nails" are on the happier side of the potential mishaps.
@chorgieporginson6620
Жыл бұрын
The shiny nail is from the polishing wheel (the white kind of fluffy-looking wheel). If your nail touched a sanding belt you'd lose some nail and/or skin if you're not careful.
@superrad1659
Жыл бұрын
what Chorgie said. 👍 polishing wheel is fairly safe w/ common sense. Just remember absolutely NO loose/baggy clothing, jewelry, tie up long hair... this applies to any spinning/rotary tool.
@Epic_Droid
Жыл бұрын
I've only used some slightly smaller-scale sanding belts, and even for those you don't want your knuckles tapping it! Shiny nail from a polishing wheel is definitely on the "happier side."
That knife is so gorgeous
Your tang is soooo small but it is a chefs knife!
that knife turned out awesome
When I polish wood I sand to 1500 grit, maybe use some mico-meshes then add a hard wax finish and polish that. Its just another route to a robust shine.
@NFTI
Жыл бұрын
Always happy to try new things, do you have a brand of wax you like?
I watched my first video of yours and part 2 released the same day!
@Nate From the Internet I am watching the 2nd video as I type this, the blade looks great 👍, in the comments for the 1st video I asked what happened to the tang which you replied you changed from hidden tang to a through tang, either way would be a good option, just remember for future knife builds regardless of a the construction type you decide to go with, try to keep the tang to a larger size to prevent the knife from snapping as soon as you use it, if you would have left it at the size it was before changing it for a through tang, that size was about perfect for either. There is a ration of blade to tang size in order to prevent breaking. The same reasons why when putting in the shoulders you want to sand, file, grind, etc etc with a rounded union instead of 90° angles, as the 90° angles leave too much to chance of the blade snapping there as well. Other that so far you're doing a great job! Keep it up!!
Looks good, you should try and do a collaboration build with Will Stelter
Its so prettyyyy 🤩
what is that sharpener you're using?
Nate!!! Saweeeeet!!
Such a beautiful knife, you did a great job making it Nate

I would love to see you make the TMNT weapons. :3
Such a beautiful knife. Love all the different patterns from the different materials
7:33 Where'd the handle go!? Haha. It's watching the process like this that makes one understand why smiths of ancient times would believe that souls or personalities would reside in the pieces they create.
The tang is very thin and the possibility to snap is big. There is a reason to have this kind of ratio blade to tang ,instead of thinning the blade 2-3 holes next to eachother and file to make the handle with bigger whole will be the better construction. Anyway look nice , enjoy using it.
i miss you and cali on tkor

I have a question for you Nate. I’m trying to make my own knife at home but I don’t want to buy any belt sanders or fancy equipment. Do you think I could pull of a simple knife with a dremel, files and sand paper?
@NFTI
Жыл бұрын
Yep, absolutely. If you search youtube for knife filing jig, you'll find a few videos on a very simple way to do it. I will say that if you need to make your own profile of the knife, a bench grinder will save you a LOT of time.
@venomous5230

@@NFTI thank you so much. I could buy a grinder but I don’t have the space for one. Also is it necessary to quench the knife? And if so can I do it in water? I am making my own profile but I’ve come up with a way to do that
@NFTI
Жыл бұрын
@@venomous5230 Most types of steel used for knives should not be quenched in water. There are a couple types of steel like 1084 that you can quench in warm cooking oil, that's probably the easiest, cheapest way to do it.
