So looks like the old Midare animation is still in the game outside of Meikyo. This will give samurai some really really nice animation variety.
Tendo Setsugekka looks so good. Definitely love the flavor of the animation this time around

Also more than GNB xD 500 potency on 15s vs 600 potency on 25s. I was already tanking as a SAM in normal raids on a regular basis, at least this time I may be able to survive long enough for the tanks to get back up xD

@@Ryu_Makkuro Nah GNB still has Brutal Shell, Aurora and Heart of Corundum which is 900 not 600. But 500 every 15 sec on top of Bloodbath and Second Wind is pretty crazy.

@@benlee9133 Wanted to say that the Bloodbath and upgraded Second Wind cancels out the Aurora and Brutal Shell, but for whatever reason completely forgot HoC was 900, not 600, which yeah makes GNB edge out SAM by just a tiny bit. In either case, SAMs can now tank a bit more safely when they're paired with absolute monkeys for tanks in roulette's.

Dude, thank you for this! I was starting to go nuts as to why I couldn't do iaijutsu x2. :-) I'm not a "pro" player and having things like this spelled out helps a ton!
SAM main here to weigh in, I don't find any of these changes to be bad. Less timer management with the Meikyo > Tsubame adjustment is pretty nice, having animation mix-ups with the Tendo Goken/Setsugekka is actually pretty sweet, and a much needed Shoha merge is phenomenal. Combined with the Role Action changes for Melee DPS, and I can confirm your assessment of "eatin' good" this expansion.
As a Samurai nerd, this pleases me.
Coming here straight from the DRK video where they got a 1200 potency heal attached to a 120s cooldown, seeing SAM get a 500 potency heal on a 15s cooldown is... both hilarious and depressing xD DRK is my main tank and SAM is my main DPS by the by.

Is a 3 month old developer build and most likely they gonna nerf it either before or after DT, just like arcane crest got nerfed post EW because it was absolutely busted
okay, i was a bit worried about how meikyo and tsubame are gonna play together but that actually sounded alright. the rotation is basically similar at least.

I have a question about the Tendo skills. Will the Tendo buff persist through Higanbana and not be eaten by it since there isn’t a Tendo Higanbana? In the current Samurai opener you Meikyo to use Midare, Meikyo again right after to use Higanbana, then fill in a second Midare with a Yukikaza combo outside of Meikyo. Will this still work?

Does anyone happen to know why these skills state "Damage dealt is increased when under an effect that raises critical hit rate" even though samurai has no skills that raise critical hit rate? Is this a situational thing? Where you have to hope someone in your party can grant you that buff?? Or is there something im not seeing.

It’s just to state that if you have any buffs to crit chance the guaranteed crits will do more damage. All guaranteed crits say that now, since somewhere in mid endwalker I believe. And no, samurai has no crit chance buffs innately in their kit, but dancers, dragoons, and scholars all have crit rate buffs. It’s simply to make those less wasted on the samurai (or any other class with guaranteed crits)
Shouha and Shouha 2 did feel silly to me in a job full of abilities with really cool JPN names.

It's strange, because in the Japanese version the attack is named "無明照破" (mumyō shōha), which you can essentially translate to "enlightening the ignorant." This is a play on the Buddhist term "無明長夜" (mumyō jyōya), which is directly translated as "the long night of spiritual darkness." With every other ability carrying over the English as-is, it's odd that they decided to just slap a 2 on the end for this one.
Hoping someone note that Tendo Setsugekka has around 3.12 sec recast, not 2.5 sec as Midare Setsugekka. It still an upgraded version though.

I feel like Tengetsu should've had a different effect instead of that delayed heal. Third Eye is used on room-wide AoEs 90% of the time, and by the time those 8 seconds are up, the healer(s) already recovered the whole group's HP. Maybe instead of this delayed heal, they should've upped the damage reduction to 15%. Or allowed using it on allies. Or given an OGCD counter attack similar to Seigan, used in the same button.
As someone who doesn't regularly play Samurai, I'm curious to hear what you SAM-mains think about the Ikishoten follow-up costing 50-gauge It sounds kinda questionable to me

SAM generates Kenki these days like wildfire spreads through a forest. So it costing 50 is just 2 less Hisastsu Shinten/Kyuten you're forced to weave every other-other GCD. Its a really good addition, especially considering Senei and Guren got a reduction in Kenki cost by 25 midway through EW in a patch. It can feel really annoying and old after awhile spamming Shinten in oGCD's on a boss just so you don't cap on Kenki and likewise waste damage, so this will ease that somewhat.

With senei costing 25less potency, it literally just replaces one shinten and nothing else.
Sam main since storm and i still can't pronounce any of the names Iam like do flower combo then moon and ice then unload all of them and each move you do hit the poke move to spend your angry sword gauge T_T I feel bad
Does SAM the melee still continue to require to stand still more than SMN the caster?

...It hasn't in god knows how many years? Outside of VERY short "casts" of Higanbana/Goken/Setsugekka, you're never stuck in place at all.

Yes but I believe those cast times still totaled more than summoners cast time (on a span of 2 minutes)

@@retokazene5085 They're 1.3s, before having the haste buff up from Shifu/Oka. SMN's cast time is 1.5s with Ruin/Tri-disaster, or 2.8s with Ruby Rite/Catastrophe.

@@XilivianSMN’s opener does all instacast (Garuda’s Slipstream has cast time but ideally you Swiftcast it). Meanwhile SAM’s opener has a whopping FOUR cast times. It absolutely does not matter they are short at 1.3s it’s the simple fact that they even have to stand still and pause for a second at all. And if you add them up, SAM must stand still for a combined total of 5.2s vs SMN’s 0s.
I feel like the heal on Tengetsu being after the buff expires will make it kind of pointless. 8 seconds is so long that by the time it goes off most healers would have already healed you up from the damage so its wasted. I get that they didnt want to add another button by doing something like bringing back merciful eyes, but 8 seconds is too long. It should be like 2 or 3 seconds.

will be useful for healers asleep at the wheel, or tanks not holding aggro as they should, but it will also help with the doom status debuff which requires you be healed to full hp to avoid instant death
so let me get this straight. ikki now gives ogi and zan at the same time, and its gauge gen is nullified? so one button for two super moves? y do this? am i misunderstanding something?
Kaeshi Higanbana is deleted from the game! Finally!
I was hoping for a pre-combat gap closer to bring us into parity with every other melee in the game. Very happy about the other changes though.
Zanshin 0.0 Yeeeesssss give us more Sephiroth moves square.
About Kaiten... one thing they could do to implement it back could be: share the same slot / keybind of New Combined Shoha, giving Shoha the priorty when it procs ( this would solve the buttons bloat issue). Give Kaiten ( no kenki cost) the auto-crit trait on Midare. In my eyes its a win / win.. anyone see flaws in this? Or im just shouting nonsense?..

As a SAM main that enjoys the current rotation, even if I do miss Kaiten like the rest of us, I'm pretty happy to see it mostly be the same. One thing I'm curious about is where Higanbana fits into the opener. With only being able to use Tsubame after Meikyo feels like you really don't want to use the second Meikyo stack just to Hinganbana and not get a Tsubame. I wonder if we'll now do our Yukikaze combo between Meikyos to get Higanbana up without losing a Tsubame use. But I'm sure those better than me will figure it out quick. Or I'm currently doing the wrong opener and nothing changes lol.

Honestly, it kinda feels like they combined Kaiten into Meikyo. We don't have the gauge cost for it anymore, but for all intents and purposes... a buffed iaijutsu is still a buffed iaijutsu
I'm worried Shinten Spam is still a thing. People want Kaiten, but I don't know if i want to keep spamming shinten into Dawntrail....
No Hissatsu: Kaiten means no real gauge management, even with Senei and Guren being 60 seconds now since they still share a cooldown... And Kaeshi: Higanbana is still pointless and they need to rework both Higanbana and Kaeshi: Higanbana to make the latter more usable, and locking Tsubame-gaeshi behind Meikyo Shisui hurts Samurai's flexibility more than it helps... gonna skip Samurai this time around if the devs don't address those issues I just mentioned...

@@Zikk0_o If that's true, then I can tell you EXACTLY how to fix Kaeshi: HIganbana WITHOUT removing entirely from the game, but people aren't going to like my idea, but here goes nothing... First we lower the set duration of Higanbana DoT to 30 seconds, but we still keep max duration 60 seconds, then we buff Kaeshi: Higanbana to where it deals the full 60 second DoT on top of the potency it already deals, but only if Higanbana current DoT duration is 30 seconds or less.

@theazuredemon4854 If you want an IDEA of a use for it off the top of my head, then I guess just let it add another 60s on top of the first and make it a 2 min dot for flexibility sake in fights where the window to reapply might get be bit rough. For me, I don't think it was needed to begin with, and I don't know why it took them so long to remove it.
I called the meikyo buff with tsubame being removed, but boy was I wrong about the zanshin thing. I assumed that was just an upgrade animation to ogi namikiri. The core rotation wont seem to change too much though. Interesting changes, but sadly not enough to pull me back into being a samurai main. It just doesn't feel the same without kaiten.
My Prediction from the live letter that our rotation basically wasn't going to change is correct then, but with senei being 60 seconds and the new ikishoten move costing 50 gauge we get minor adjustments to ken ki management in not pressing shinten a few times so it's almost like we got kaiten back.
meikyo being mandatory for tsubame use is really lame.

They are currently both 60 and 55 second abiities with 2 charges, which causes timing issues. All they did was combine them to clean it up.

I see SAM is back to having all the AOE hitboxes: circle, line, and cone. At least all the GCDs are still circles. Conal Tenka Goken was terrible.

I have been wanting Guren/Senei to be 60 seconds instead of 120 seconds since the very beginning in Stormblood! Not a fan of the new Midare animation though, and REALLY not a fan of the new Tenka Goken animation either, but at least the original conal Tenka Goken seems to live on in Ikishoten's Zanshin. And these are new Tendo variations that exist only from Meikyo Shisui phases, so I guess I can be glad that the regular versions still exist? Hopefully next expansion they find a Kaeshi use for Higanbana, sorta like how it took till Shadowbringers for ninjas to find a use for Hyoton's ninjutsu combination by Kassatsu-ing it. The overt refusal to bring back Kaiten in any form after the well known nearly unanimous fan consensus is still an insult that is not to be forgotten or forgiven.
Still mad about Kaiten. I'll stick with Reaper for now...
Guess I'll never understand or get along with other Samurai players, according to all the whining in this comment section. Its been the DPS I've enjoyed the most, and played the most since 5.2 ShB. I loved how it evolved in EW, and Kaiten being deleted in it was the single greatest yet most objectively understated change they ever made. It served as nothing more than seeing an idiot waving his sword around before a big attack. So to see it still gone, and witness the rotation further evolve in DT in flashy yet meaningful ways is downright sublime. Nothing in this video told me otherwise, try as some whiners might in their attempt to convince some of the more casual players.

Using Tsubame on higanbana was a damage loss even in cleave, you were better off using tsubame on midare when faced with 2 enemies
gdi, was honestly hoping at least the zanshin aoe thing to be a replacer / upgrade for shinten so we can spam that every 50 kenki, instead of the boring small ass baby shinten spam after losing kaiten... And they couldn't at least somehow weave the kaiten animation into the Iaijutsu wind up animation, for us who miss it? At least devs combined Shoha, so that's one complaint over, and with Senei / Guren moved to 60s, there's a bit more to do in 1 mins... -sigh- I'll prob just level this along with Mnk in MSQ so the xp doesnt go to waste and shared gear, but hoping the Vergil and Kaiten -cough- things will be updated with these new clean animations or back in working order in a month or more, vanilla Shinten spam just looks and plays like -all the expletives-, what @&%_+("% dev approved of these job states

Recycling old abilities as new ones is pretty damn lazy and pathetic, wow. Zanshin is just sams original aoe attack before endwalker with some added flare to it. If square manages to survive with this expansion, the next expansion will probably be their last since they want to keep holding off on making the gameplay more unique and fun.
These changes sucks. I get it that you get better animations and skill upgrades; however, unless there are more changes, samurai basically is forced to do the standard rotation, and lose the possibility to perform no hagakure rotation. Forcing tsubame to be used with meikyo greatly reduces the flexibility of samurai, and the maximum damage of samurai will be way lower (in case one doesn’t know, samurai can do optimal rotations without hagakure by managing each minute’s skill order thx to meikyo’s 55cd). Good for new samurai players but sucks for skilled players.
I need to accept and learn to be less passionate about a Job in XIV... as this has made me the least excited for a XIV expansion, at least for the Job gameplay of my favorite Job
