My comment isn’t really on topic, but I recently subbed and I’m enjoying the straightforward, down-to-earth content. I like listening to people who sound like they are talking to me rather than at me.

Thanks I appreciate that. I think it helps that most of my video are unscripted. I tend to sound a little more stiff when I’m reading from a teleprompter. I think only a couple of my recent videos are scripted and those are because they are editorials and I need to write down what I want to say. But for reviews and tutorials I’d rather just talk causally and edit when I ramble! Thanks.

There's a definite difference. Personally I think the third distance was the best sounding one. It had good clarity and lots of nice high end without losing too much bass.

I thought that was a good one too. For me it was a toss up between the 2nd and 3rd. Adding the second condenser mics also brings back the bass tones.

One reason I like plug-ins is because it saves my EXACT sound and settings so when I go back to work on a song a day, a week, a month later, I still have my exact same sound.

I can relate. I have used plug-ins almost exclusively for recording guitar since I started recording guitar about ten years ago.

I experimented with mic placement early in my life. It depends on the sound you want for the song. Closing a low powered amp with a small speaker, like a 6 incher, in a closet makes the amp sound bigger. I've tried some things. Great video.

Thanks you just reminded me I wanted to experiment with iso cabs also. Or just move the amp under the basement stairs and really crank it.

There is a clear increase in high end the further the microphone is placed. The more you tell people how you do things, the more the prejudiced and deaf will come at you with arguments.

Kind of why I did the video in real time. I'm just showing what I did and what it sounded like. I'm sure someone will say I'm wrong! LOL

The truth is, setting up for home recording is always a pain in the ass. It always has been for me anyway. As you stated it will take a lot of experimentation and moving around etc. My advice, is once you get it in the position that you like or works for you, measure it, document it, and don't move it! Or move anything for that matter! I think it sounded good in the end, and could definitely hear the change as you moved the 57 farther back. I think between the 2 and three inches sounded best, but 5 inches back sounded good as well. 5 inches back (57) and with the condenser might be the way to go. With my experience, I usually ended up (from what I can remember) with the 57 about 2.5/3 inches back and slightly off center/lined up with the edge of the dust cap, and had a condenser 6 to 8 inches back, at about the position that you have yours. As you mentioned, watching a video or getting advice never works out the same way as recommended because everything varies due to different gear and equipment. Also different amps, volume and gain also changes everything. If you are going for a cleaner sound with the fender for demos, etc, I think what you achieved in the end sounds good. Maybe tweak it a little more if you are still not happy with it.

Thanks for the comment. Most of the videos I have watched show the mic very close, sometimes touching, but to me it just never sounded that good. I agree with your setup as well. Then I fell down a rabbit hole of isolation cabinets and that led me to the Two Notes Torpedo Captor Reactive Loadbox DI and Attenuator which acts as a digital iso cab. Basically you disconnect the speaker on your amp and plug into this box, then you can either connect the speaker back to this box, or use headphones or connect directly to your DAW. This allows for full volume on your tube amp without actually having the volume up very high, or at all. I just might have to try this out.

Love this. Unless I use a nice studio condenser microphone set-up (or recording straight from amp like a modeler with built in interface) my recordings come out dull sounding. The post processing brings it to life for me - little EQ and compression. I’ve also had good luck recording with one microphone up close on the amp. and one in the room.

When I used to record guitar, I think I got the best sound with the mic above the amp, I didn't use an sm57 though. Plus I used to record mostly bass I went above the amp because at medium volumes I was experiencing distortion Also I had sound deadening on the walls by using wool blankets hung about 3 inches in front of the wall. And the amp wasn't near the wall. Even though you are recording in front of the speaker I sounds as if you are getting an out of phase echo from the back of the speaker bouncing waves off of the wall and because the lower tones have more energy they are bouncing back and making the sound muddy. Keep in m8nd that I was doing this a long time ago and my memory may not be 100 percent

I'm wondering if your room has more of a effect on the tone/sound recorded than you realize. It's a small space, may be creating artifacts, reverb, and other unintended issues that you don't think you hear but are there and the mics are sensitive to it. Just a thought

  • @JayceAllanGuitar

Could be, I haven't treated the room yet, but it's pretty dead. There's carpet squares on the floor, and the walls are wood paneling with foam insultation on the outside walls and roll insulation on the inside walls. The ceiling is just the open floor joists, wood. My next test will be to build an iso cabinet and try that.

@@JayceAllanGuitar It's basically a 🔳or 🔘 cylinder placed up against the speaker baffle of the amp' the inside dot representing the target area placement of the mic....to isolate that area from the rest of the speaker. Works good for recording. You can make different sizes using PVC pipe or some scrap wood laying around.

LOL. I know. I didn't hear a massive difference between the 2" and 3" so decided to push it out even further to see if the difference was increased.
