Humphrey is not God...Will you tell him or should I ..? one of the best lines ever!

How Paul Eddington keeps a straight face after that line I'll never know.

Agreed!
Derek Fowlds deserved an award of his own for this series. He actually stole many of the scenes even when he had few lines and he got some of the funniest lines. "Will you tell him or shall I" is pure genius.
Rest in Peace Derek Fowlds. You brought joy and laughter.
proof that you don't need crudity to be funny. Just great scripts and great actors

How true. When modern comedy slips into foulness I lose interest.

Yes but quality always has its price
I can almost hear Sir Humphrey now, "I taught you well, Bernard"
Rest in peace, Derek Fowlds.

@steve gale Actually, I've watched and rewatched "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister" over and over and over, and I loved every moment of it and still do. What better form of respect could one afford a performer than that.

@Kaioken20, Derek Fowlds, Paul Eddington, and Nigel Hawthorne all back together again. Heaven's theater must be sold out and the laughter must be uproarious. This show and his work were fantastic. A real shame he's gone, RIP "Bernard Woolley".

@steve gale Why? So I can also belittle a fan's condolences of a much loved actor by admonishing strangers like a reproaching spinster? I would think the Bible has something to say about a haughty spirit, no? God Bless YOU.
As always, Bernard's answer makes perfect sense. He can't betray Humphrey to the minister, if only because it will lead the minister to think that if he can betray Humphrey then he can also betray the minister. For all that I love Yes Minister, I should point out that The Thick Of It is its true successor. It is as ruthlessly accurate about modern UK government as YM was about government 40-50 years ago. It's the governing process that has deteriorated, not the comedy.

The Minister thinks there are two persons, and that in telling one in Complete Confidence (itself arguably a tautology) that one would not disclose any information to anyone else including the other one, even if that other one may also have other Completely Confidential Information. Whereas the PPS considers that those who have Completely Confidential Information from one are able to share with the other, as long as the Completely Confidential Information does not pass beyond those who share such Completely Confidential Information. For Civil Service Confidential Information may be shared with a wider circle of persons strictly on a need to know bases, but may not be shared who do not need to know. Restricted Information is avalible to those on the circulation list, who may not share it with anyone else. See also clip of ;Highly Confidential ( Share only with Minister PS and PPS normally)

well it's more about Humphrey being his boss too and if he betrays Humphrey he creates an enemy. this is not about anything else but politics

Actually the way that Bernard answered that question should have told the minister everything he needed to know. Of course Minister Hackett was a nitwit in the show.....
The most intelligent, well-written sitcom ever made. The remake was bound to fail because sadly they could never hope to compare with the cast of the original series.
R.I.P. Mr Fowlds .. a great actor for many many years
First watched in 2018 and all the arguments are still valid. This program will remain relevant till their is a government somewhere on this planet.
This is gold standard of entertainment.
Rip Bernard, Humfrey is asking for his key!
Hacker would probably get awful headaches at the end of each day.
such great writing and acting
Every time Mr Bernard goes on one of his little rambles I have to hit my hand on something because of the intensity of my laughter!
I love it when Bernard sounds like Humphrey.
Bernard learned much from Sir Humphrey 😂

This is amazing. I wish I was around when it was on TV.

My thoughts exactly
We need a vote of confidence XD
R.I.p. derek
Now that's what I call a confidence game.
Such merry go round!
Thank you...confidentially.
"Will you tell him or shall I?"
I love british humor.
Brilliant!!! For me the most attractive way to learn english, discounting only talking to attractive native speakers. Very rich in vocabulary and with the good old repetitio mater studoirum method, in this very case the word ,,confidence'' in all its variations :-)

Con = With. Fidel = Trust. The best latin roots of English.
Double speak was the best lol.
awesome!!!
Let me make one thing clear, Humphrey is not God, OK? Will you tell him or shall I? XD
Proof that there IS hope for America's youth :-)
@dasgdasg I agree. Thick of It was good, but it's bit too much about scandal and politics and has jokes like 'Minister Denies Allegations of Racism' and ministers making gaffs. YM does a bit of that too but it mainly focuses on government, not politics. So it addreses education, defence, unemployment etc. Harder, but more rewarding laughs. Yes Minister FTW! (New Statesmen was also funny, :-) )
This show is universal comedy applies to all countries ☺️☺️
Bernard would be great secret agent xD
Sir Humphrey must be proud
Yes Minister -> The New Statesman -> In The Thick of It
Sooo much better than the Thick of It.
"He's bigger than me"
He’s speaking “civil servant” which is closely related to “double talk”.
It's 2020... I wonder if the Soviets developed that multi-layered ballistic missile defence system that can intercept Polaris yet?

Actually I read somewhere that it was in 2020/2019 about something that is kinda similar. I forgot what I actually read, but after watching Yes, Prime Minister, they were probably talking about the same thing.
+BBCWorldwide, where's the bit of Sir Humphrey explaining the EU?
@highpath4776
5 жыл бұрын
He doesn't, he explains the EEC. The EU only got named by a further treaty after the series had finished, its on YT in full and in clip
Ohh, I remember this show from earlier year's, and you don't have to be british to understand the humour, I could never wait until the next episode, they don't make shows like this anymore :-(, regards from Denmark
0:52, Incomplete? one word or an antonym?
so what Bernard is trying to say, basically, is, that he is leaking like a sieve
Did Bernard just do a Humphery?
The problem of course is that Bernard told Humphrey where to find Hacker, so some things aren't as confidential as others.

People who like this show should check out an Australian series called 'The Hollowmen'.
Why won't BBCWorldwide videos work for me!? :(
I like Humphrey and Bernard could spend a solid week explaining something that could have been explained in 6 words or less
@harlequin2262 You can buy all the series in a whole set for about 30-50£ i think from amazon or somthing :)

@dasgdasg What the hell? Did I really say this? What the hell was I thinking?
@05batpod You are a very perseptive 18-year-old.
There are tons of political satires about! Not sure 'political correctness' has much to do with it :o)
They should not start copying themselves.
some of it might be Political Correctness, another reason could be that writers dont have imagination to come up with such material
