You are absolutely right about cleaning a book, just with the makeup pad the cover started to shine. The Absorene really takes the dirt out of the cover. I really don't have all the tools and ability to make the back cover whiter. But the eraser I used did work to remove more dirt. All and all your videos are very educational. I tried it on my Blackhawk #90 from 1954 the colors popped right away. Thank you!

Thanks, it is really hard for me to put a project book down but once you damage spine/staples the whole integrity of the book is at risk

Love your videos and have always found cleaning old things up an making them look nice again very pleasing/gratifying. How did you learn what it is you do here? Honestly thinking of learning how to do it simply because it seems like I would it enjoy it. Kind of like building a model to some for me... would love some direction on how to start doing this past just watching your videos, which are great but if I'm going to do it I feel there is more details I should be aware of then what is covered on them.

Thank you for posting this. I found it extremely helpful and the finished book truly was night and day from what it was. I have the seven book run of this original Ghost Rider series and I have also been trying my hand at dry cleaning a few of my books. So far of all the videos I've seen on cleaning books, your video was by far the best. Thanks also for all the links to the products you used as well. What I don't yet have is a press but I'm aware that a 15 X 15 is the best size to go with. I will absolutely give it a try. @@hobbyhero6973 I met John Romita Sr. at a comicon many years back. I found a nice copy of ASM 50 for $45 dollars (so, you know it was quite a while ago!). I asked him to sign it and he did so on the bottom of the splash page and in the margin by my letter.

Also got a few brand new wolverine 1s if you like to grade a sell it. eBay about $15,000 for a 9.8 and these are definitely 9.8 or higher. Corners intact. No breaks. Staples in great shape. Kept in right humidity for years. Just like wine. Maybe a $15,000. Credit if you sell it or keep it. Sure the book will rise. Not common at all. No body knew who he was. Just like Teen mutant turtles. Look at them now. CGC finally recognized newsstand books and Canadian books which are ultra rare. Got 1 of 4 Acetate prints for Spider-Man 1. To print the book, now how cool is that? Again all in banks. I move around a lot because of my job.

There are a couple different papers used in the process but the one that has the hydrogen peroxide applied to it is copy paper. Should be links to the exact kind I use in description

1 - Do you dilute the peroxide, or as is out of the bottle? 2 - How do you go about soaking the copy paper with peroxide, is it sprayed on or dipped in some sort of tray?

I don’t dilute the peroxide and the solution is sprayed onto the paper on both sides

I've now watched the video 3 times and I have a question about something I'd like to get "cleaned" or more specifically "lightened". It's actually an interior page. Tanned a bit and I bought a trashed, coverless book to get an ad inside to frame, but it needs to look better. Something you can help with?

I have a question, Hobby Hero. Does your cleaning and pressing process work on fingerprints? I got a 9.0 on a Wolverine 1 regular series. The graders notes said, light fingerprints on cover.

Depends. If it is in the ink can’t do much. If it’s in the surface then yes

I wish you would show the preparation for the paper you use putting over the book what do you soak it with how soaked is it.. what's the temperature of the press how long do you leave the heat on while the book is in there

It varies quite a bit from book to book based on age, condition and staining of the book. If you are looking to start doing it yourself I’d start with the book in the description. From there if there are specific questions on books you’re working on feel free to hit me up on FB or IG.

Great presentation. While the initial cost of setting up your own station can get a little expensive, I was wondering what the going rate to perform this service is for one book? I understand that the cost would vary based on amount of time/work that is needed. Could you please provide me with sample pricing for low/medium/extensive work? I thank you in advance.

Yeah it does vary quite a bit. I can only tell you what I charge for it and it starts at $65 for basic cover treatment and the most I've done for one book was close to $200 if that gives you a rough idea

@@decojoker1 I haven’t. I’ve messed with water and rubbing alcohol with mixed results. This seems to work well and is convenient as it comes pre mixed

How do you find simple Immacuclean followed with 3% hop vs this method? I have found wiping with both works well and seems low risk

I’ve stopped using any surfactants as wiping the surface while wet always comes with some level of risk and is mostly not necessary with these processes. If there was an especially dirty cover I would probably just use distilled water or possibly a very diluted surfactant.

Have you ever remove a cover to work on a book? It seems easier to work with a cover when I remove the interior.

I have but I try to avoid when possible. Messing with staples just opens up for more to go sideways on me.

How much would it affect the grade if you did actually pull some color off with the artist eraser? I did some really light erasing on a yellow color Superman that had pencil on it. I stopped as soon as I noticed but I got the slightest bit of yellow coming off on the eraser, and the sheen is gone from that spot too. It’s only noticeable at certain angles but I always regretted doing it, just wondering how much damage I did lol

Really just depends on the overall grade. On a mid grade or lower probably wouldn't effect the overall grade at all

Think I answered this for you on another video but in case I didn't; the light box will just lighten stains where the overlay can actually pull stain from the paper fibers.

It kept the same grade but with CGC blue label which I don't think it would have gotten in it's original condition.

I was curious as to how long you are leaving the book in the press AFTER the hearing (i usually go ten minutes between 140-165 depending on the book). I'm finding that the book is remaining quite damp after an hour in the press cooling, do should you leave it for 8-12 hours for each of the four treatments? That would extend each book to a two day cleaning, but after the cover on an ASM 26 literally fell off for me at the staples, I'm very concerned about the book remaining damp at all Thanks.

​@@hobbyhero6973 Beginning the peroxide on the RC interior page. I do the FC outside, then inside, then RC outside, then RC inside. When I opened the book to do the interior of the RC, the book was still damp, and as i opened it gently, the paper just melted around the staple. So I'm wondering if I just need to leave it in the press for many more hours to let it dry more completely after each step

What if, during the removal of the sheet after press, you also see color being slightly removed from the book? Too much peroxide? Paper too wet? What is the correct % mixture of distilled water and peroxide in the mister? 50/50?

It is pretty common with reds to have some lift but if you’re seeing other colors come up it could be too much pressure or too much heat

Sorry to be so abrupt with questions, I am a 66 year old guy who sold his collection in the 1980's and due to a windfall $$ spent 45 grand from 2009 to 2013 on buying back my old 1962 and 1963 marvels from my youth. had them mostly graded with PGX so just recently found out what that means, and bought a press and am submitting them to cgc. but am nervous about my FF5 PGX 3.5 white pages. looking for someone to make it a 3.5 CGC which is sometimes easy sometimes hard. like my JIM 85's pgx 6.0 and 5.5 came back from cgc 4.0 and 4.5 rebsubmitted the 5.5 that went to 4.0 after pressing and light cleaning got a 5.0 so happy with my skill, but confused with was it just a bad grader day, or good grader day. anyhow love your stuff . thanks. any interest in pics of the 3.5? Brad

Sure shoot them over. I will say all grading is subjective. It’s not a guarantee the CGC 3.5 will grade 3.5 at CGC again so always proceed with caution when cross grading.

@@hobbyhero6973 are you good with spine roll, I would like to start with an ff 18 pgx 6.0 with a roll. can have it pronto if you are confident spine roll not always so easy, but good 6.0 spine to start with

Pressing question... I'm at a loss. I've humidified and pressed a WC Avengers a couple times and unable to get the ripples out. I used copy paper as a buffer after the initial humidification and they still won't come out. Help!

Lately after almost every HOP i lose lots of colour, and also very sticky with top cover, Iam using a 50/50 3% peroxyd and distilled water.145 for 300 sec and then leaving in the press for like 2hrs after to cool it down. Am I doing something wrong?

Pressure may be too high. Also try taking it out after 1 hour of rest.

Yeah, they can determine that the cleaning was to an extent they deem it restoration. I have a whole video on why I think it's a silly approach.

I think you need a different software that corrects the aspect ratio of your video

It took me several months of practice before moving up to pressing bigger books and over a year of regular practice before moving on to more advanced cleaning
