leetfighter you don’t even have to automate the trains for Darwinism to take effect. Trains take about a mile to stop, so even if the engineer hits the emergency brakes, a car on the crossing is still likely to get hit.

@@LongmontRailway27 I don't think it's that they don't learn. I think it's that they don't think that the laws apply to themselves, or at least they don't care. Besides...they or their families can always use the railroad if someone ends up dead. And yes, those lawsuits happen, especially in litigious states such as here in California. A couple of years back here in Burbank, there was a fitness guru making a video on the tracks when he was flattened by a Metrolink train, which had is horn blazing to warn him it was coming. His wife sued Metrolink for wrongful death.

As a European it is striking to me how slow American trains are. I guess this is a factor in why the car drivers take the risk - they can look up the track, see a train, and assess how long it will take to reach the crossing. If you can see an approaching train in most of Europe it will be on you within moments.

Looks like a couple were just a matter of timing. One looked like the lights came on as the car approached and had no choice but keep going, otherwise they would have stopped on the tracks. The mini van, at least they stopped and backed up.

There are a number of crossing around here, some with lights and crossing arms and some with just lights. The ones with just lights flashing are treated the same as a stop sign. You stop, look, and can go when safe. Otherwise you could be there for hours because trans stop just past the crossing and sit for long periods of time while they switch out cars down the track.

No. If other vehicles behind, you are impeding traffic and you may cause a rear-end collision. Bus and hazmat drivers arequired to stop in case the mee-mool lights *(o)T(o)* have failed toperate. Though such failures arextremely rare, I listen and look when approaching railroad grade crossings.

2:00 is kind of strange because the train is at the intersection before the gate is even down. That's not supposed to be that way. I grew up near a rail yard and driving around the gates is so incredibly dangerous. People don't realize that you really can't tell how fast a train is going when you're looking down the track at the head light. You might think it's 3/4 of a mile away and/or traveling slowly but it will be on top of you before you can blink your eye. Very dangerous.

I live near a crossing of the NJT Riverline day time and NS at night. Bells and Lights...can't do a gate because of the width and angle of the streets....a dude on a bicycle with headphones could not see the lights nor hear the bells....a helicopter transported him to a trauma center...it's a well lit crossing, but stupid is not curable

Just remember when the car gets hit by the train it's 2 tonnes vs around 8,000-12,000 tonnes and the car invariably loses, it is not worth the risk.

here is a true story. My former babysitter was coming from NYC into our hometown where we have two tracks on Elm St Station. One day, the train doors opened on both sides. She gets out of the wrong side and about to cross the second track to get home. Only she did not make it home that day. She was hit by a freight train coming from NYC on the second track. Her body was found over 1 mile away near the river. She never noticed that second train due to the bend in the tracks towards the station. So NEVER go across a train crossing with the bars down and the red lights are flashing. Or it may be the last thing you do.

@Longmont Railway: In my home town the problem is the opposite way, they obey the law and stop at rail road singnal, however when the gate rise back-up they don't wait for the light and the gate to fully lift and stop flashing, and I got an idot honk at me for not going when the gate lifted, I know this is rare in my home town and it only happen once. but sometimes this can happen the gate lift but the flashing rail road sign will not stop flashing because they are about to go down again right away because another train is passing, so that is why always wait in rail road singnal that the flashing red light fully stop.

The driver of a Volkswagon Beetle assuming this train to be the reason for the gates/flashers, and drove around the gates and collided w/a fast moving freight train on an adjacent main track hidden by the 1st train killing the Volkswagon's driver instantly!

Thing is these are all US crossings, they look to be doing about 20 25 MPH. Those barriers are just a bar you can drive around, or if in a very low sports car or quad possibly drive under. You can plainly see how far the train is away. In the UK, most of our trains travel very quickly through the level crossing. About 70 -90mph. The barriers are pretty solid affairs, and there is usually fencing and trees so you cannot see how far the train is away. To be fair, there is a high level observation office where they can see the train approaching, and know where it is with train warning & protection. Now what happens if someone tries to beat the barriers. They will usually get through the first one. But not the second, and become trapped on the tracks. There is time for the crossing attendants to warn the approaching loco. But so many people think it is like a traffic light that you have to try to beat! The consequences are literally NOT worth the risk! You see the barrier warnings. And the Warning barriers! - Think STOP! No matter how much of a hurry you are in!

Railroad tracks and roads crossings are never at a 90 degree angle, so it's difficult at times to accurately gauge how close the train is.

Part of me understands the car drivers' frustrations. A 1-1/2 mile long freight train that's only going 35mph can bring your day to a dead stand still. Another part of me knows that a train that's loaded up like that needs five freaking miles to stop all forward momentum. You misjudge how far away it is, or how fast it's coming, and your day comes to an even deader stand still. Me, I obey the flashing red lights. Moments like that are exactly why I have a Kindle.
