I had the fortune of watching Ben Platt be Evan Hansen on Broadway and the man deserved 50 Tony's. You know those ticks he had, those are put on for the character. Evan Hansen is a young man with crippling anxiety & social issue & my therapist friend recognized these markers as accurate. Ben also mastered the ability to SOB on stage and have his singing voice sound just as clear & beautiful as you heard it. I saw it with my own eyes or I wouldn't believe it. I'm a Pentaholic and I love that they did this song! Scott sang the hell out of it! But what Ben Platt does to this song & this role, it's incredible!!!

Though I love Pentatonix, and think they did a good job technically, Ben Platt is just so expressive and good at embodying Evan and his emotions. His voice, with its beautiful vibrato and unique depth also adds to this song. Pentatonix's version was beautiful, but I felt like it lacked the deep emotion and connection to the song. I also think that it just felt too smooth and almost expressionless, with the typical serious delivery in Pentatonix videos. It didn't feel like a desperate cry for recognition in an indifferent world from a lonely, broken kid, it was a just another pretty song by talented singers.

I agree. Though I love Pentatonix and it was technically great I feel that it lacked emotion/depth. Characterization gives a song texture that it otherwise lacks. Had I not seen Ben Platt first I would probably love P’s version. Being a musical theater nerd has its drawbacks.

Thank you for putting up a comparison reaction, not many people do that. So, a couple of things: 1) Main difference between them is the performance. Ben Platt, of course, was the star of Dear Evan Hansen, and this was a performance at the Tony Awards. So Ben was never going to "sing" the song, he was going to "act" the scene/song, just as he would perform it 8 nights a week on Broadway. So of course he performed it more expressively, more emotionally, even with a hint of being on the verge of tears in a couple of spots. For a few minutes, everyone in the auditorium and in their living rooms got to "watch" Dear Evan Hansen - not "listen" to Waving Through a Window. What Pentatonix did would be the equivalent of a pop star doing the studio soundtrack version for the record label of a song performed by an actor in a film. Of course you're not going to see the emotion, or personality ticks that Ben Platt put out. He's acting, they're singing. And they're not singing in front of a Broadway audience in a packed house, they are performing it on a sound stage with no one in the room. So it's not really a fair comparison, from that standpoint. 2) What this DOES demonstrate however, which is why I appreciate you reacting comparatively to both in one video, is just how incredibly Pentatonix reflected the original backing music to the song. It really speaks to how well they understand music, and how to recreate instrumental sounds and orchestral complexities with just five voices. Go back and watch them both again, but this time focus on the music, rather than the vocals. As talented as every single one of these singers are vocally, it pales in comparison to their ability to recreate full orchestral music. I think we've gotten so used to how good they are at it, we take it for granted a little. This is a great reminder of just how good they really are. So I love both performances, from different standpoints, and I love having the original to show where PTX is drawing from to produce what we hear when they arrange a piece. Thanks again, for that.

PTX is great. And did great. Ben platt not only was live but he sang the whole song by himself which makes his performance imo not only absolutely amazing but non comparable. PTX was a studio version with 3 different people singing parts of the song. (What they did with the beat boxing was incredible)

Something else to know...Ben had been singing that song and all the others in Dear Evan Hansen for over a year, 8 times a week, for both the Broadway season and pre-Broadway try-outs. And he sings for much of the show. He was actually on vocal rest leading up to the Tonys. I remember Scott even mentioned the vocal workout of just that song in one of his Instagram stories. If you like this song. I’d urge you to listen to the cast recording. There are amazing numbers in it, and the story is amazing. Not sure if you knew that the composer and lyricist for this show were the ones who did the songs for The Greatest Showman and the lyrics for La La Land, among other shows.

It has the emotion, act, and unique voice, and Ben really shows the meaning of the song, like the breathing thing he do, holding his shirt, and facial expression, he really shows what the song really needs to feel, PTX did great! Perfect voice to make Acapella, but it lacks emotion, the song felt so fast, it's a catchy genre they did and it can make us move or dance, but the song has a meaning, they did it fun, but the lyrics of the song is sad... Like it's confusing... I LOVE the beat they did and that's what I like to them! If only they just make it slower and give more emotion to it... It would be *PERFECTLY PERFORMED*

I am a massive of both Ben and pentatonix, but this highlights a couple of things for me about pentatonix is they sometimes lose the soul of the song in the cover, they perform it beautifully and I don’t think it’s on them that it doesn’t hold feeling to be, I believe it’s just due to some types of songs not translating well to group/accapella performances. This song has a lot of meaning behind it and I feel that in the beautifully technical accapella cover of it that gets lost. Possibly not helped by Scott singing the lead, who despite having a fantastic voice doesn’t have much that draws me in or connects to me, it’s just too... standard maybe is the word? Ben’s biggest draw for me is his ability to put emotion into what he sings, which is helped by his ridiculous vibrato, it gives him a uniqueness and appeal that I find really enjoyable. Possibly Scott sang it better in his studio performance compared to bens live one but still.

  • @extremelifeandlarydean1894
    @extremelifeandlarydean18942 жыл бұрын

The Pentatonix version was amazing and flawless because it was a studio version that allowed them to sing it until it was at perfection. Ben’s version was amazing and LIVE and to me, even more remarkable because he did that at the Tonys, one on one with the audience live and with all of the onstage dimensions of the performance as well. To me a more effective and fair comparison vocally (even though these artists are apples and oranges) would be with the studio version that he did off of the soundtrack of “Dear Evan Hansen.” I am very thankful that you celebrated both of these versions, however I must say any of the Ben Platt versions of the song move me powerfully. Well not so much with other artists that have done this song. He owns it, it’s him. He brings this character to life. Any other version is kind of like somebody trying to cover and Eddie Van Halen guitar solo. It’s in the park but, not quite the same. Ben is the man!

If there was an "advantage", I think Ben had it here because a good live performance has a level of emotion that might not be as apparent in a studio recording.

Ben Platt is incredible (I am not a musical person so first time really watching him)but when you have 5 incredible voices doing the song, it’s an unfair fight

Thankfully it's not a fight. It's a comparison to see how different artists cover or perform the music. I love Scott's approach to that iconic vocal that Ben gave in the original production and in subsequent performances since then.

I love me some pentatonix but gotta be honest that having a group sing that particular song kinda lowers the meaning of the song itself. Ben platt really brings the feeling of evans loneliness and also fear of messing up in front of people and it just really brings a whole new level of the song… the only thing lonely feeling in pentatonix video is the piano in the background lol. That’s just my personal opinion.

I think you need to see a Pentatonix concert. They dance and move around quite a lot. The point of this comparison is to hear how they interpret and perform the music and likewise for Ben. Not saying one is better or worse, just listening to how they choose to sing.

Just gonna say... I prefer Ben's singing... It would be PERFECTLY PERFORMED

I think Pentatonix sang the song so well. That being said, Ben performed part of the play AND sang the song. For just listening purposes I like Pentatonix’s version, but as part of the play, obviously Ben did that. So if I was going to watch the play, I’d prefer Ben’s version.

I'm a huge Ben Platt fan and I'm a huge Pentantonix fan. I have to say, although the performance was great it was mainly preformed by Scott, and I feel he did not Bring the emotion this song requires and definatly would not be able to deliver it as successfully as Ben on a live stage performance of Dear Evan Hansen. I did love the Pentantonix cover but it just did not have the Broadway feel for me.

I don't understand this video. You are trying to critique the original person and performance from a Broadway show. It's not an interpretation or a version. He is the original. It is the original. Makes no sense. Everyone else is a version. It's not to be questioned. Hes dojng the performance from the show bro.

It is Evan's song, not a hip song. You've never (really?) heard of a vocal group doing the sounds and music like that? Your musical knowledge is so limited. It was owned by Ben. He did an entire show (8 times a week) doing that character and that song and all of the others. Considered one of the best performances EVER. You have shallow, plebian tastes, man.

wow, insults surrounded by patronization. You may be surprised at my experience and knowledge of music. The point of this video was to compare the two performances of this song. That's it. To see how it was done originally and how it was done by PTX. At it's core, people may prefer a cover over an original. Why? because of choice. Thanks for your comment.

I actually feel like Pentatonix didn't use their strengths enough for this song. Scott sang so much of it solo and his voice is nowhere near as good as Ben's. So their version didn't do much for me. It's a shame because we know how capable they are of transforming songs in incredible ways.
