Comparison SW 3B vs QCXmini

Ғылым және технология

This video shows a comparison of the Venus SW-3B and the QCX mini. Main focus will be on the SW-3B. I will also show the negative points of both transceivers. What is not shown at the video: The QCXmini does not like RF on the housing. If your antenne isn't perfectly matched the QCX do sometimes crazy things. (noisy sidetone up to switching to GPS mode and so on.) The SW-3B does not show this problem.
I like the SW-3B very much but I will sell it on ebay because I need space (and money) for an KX2.
Feel free to write your comments below. Ham radio should be a discussion.

The CW decoder is pretty poor, not worth having. The decoder between your ears would be a far better option. The Echo Papa QRP video is pretty pointless as both Radios are built for totally different purpose.

The problems are now less than before. I recalibrated the QCX again and used my new GPS (from QRP-Labs) to align the frequency. Now it works very very well. Some small birdies but not annoying like last time. I realy love this TRX. I think about to buy another one for 20m and modify it to the uSDX (SSB). If this small box is able to do allmode. Can you explain the birdies with the QCX-mini? I am still undecided which of these two radios to purchase. Do these make using the radio difficult? Also, do you use an auto antenna tuner, or a “band specific” antenna? Having multiple bands is a nice idea, but when I review my log I see that most of my CW is on 20m. Hello! Totally agree regarding the SW-3B knob, it feels very cheap and you have to be very careful about it, not only when using it, but also when packing it to your bag. I am afraid that it will break some day. It is not designed for tuning around bands, rather to set a frequency and call CQ... I am also missing a SWR meter, to be able to check if the antenna is OK. I will need to assemble one. Last little thing is that it cannot call CQ in a loop, it appears that you need to press the button for each CQ... (Or hopefully, am I missing something?) The rest about SW-3B is great, receiver is good enough, the RF gain knob is very useful. I like this RIG very much, looking forward to test it in the field, at some summit or so!

Fully agree! I made some expirience that the QCXmini has huge problems if your antenna is not perfect and has some RF on the cable. The SW-3B never showed a problem like that. Receiver is also very nice. It can be reduced to the cheap tuning knob. Maybe it is somehow possible to change it to a more valuable one. Vy 73 de Björn

it appears the Venus SW 3c which is the slightly larger version of the 3B is now available. it costs about $188 USD but comes fully built up and tested (there does not appear to be any kit option with this transceiver ) . Again it is a three band model. IN terms of features, the SW 3C and the MINI are about equal. With the 3C you get SSB decode (and three bands for not much more than the price of a mini fully built up and in a case , the latter being about $ 125 USD ) with the MIni you get CW decode. One very important point. - it is relatively easy to destroy the PA of the Mini using an untuned antenna. that's because it uses three off BS 170s in parallel in a class E configuration and no VSWR protection. The 3C uses a IRF 510A in class C as the output device but a low power loading and it is going to be far more robust when run into a bad load or a coax break or anything of that sort. A coax break will destroy the PA of the mini every time. Not only that it will also destroy one of the microcontroller (An Atmel328) outputs in general so it will cause a massive rebuild job or even total destruction. TEF

THe example they have on the video (unless revised ) worries me. It has a massive amount of relay noise. It sounds like crap - almost like a pre production version. The examples given on various Yt videos of users indicate keying is silent. that suggests to me that some early version was videoed and Venus iTech was too damn lazy to re video the as per shipped version.
