I realize I'm SUPER late to this party...but I think the real test of a tom mic is in the way it deals with off-axis sounds. You could do the same test but with a crash/ride behind it. Hit the cymbal and then do some drum hits. I can tune, EQ, and head-selection a drum to have the right sound in front of the mic. The stuff behind the mic is always a bit hit or miss (or, more realistically, a bit hit too hard)!

I feel ya. The amount of bleed will also depend on the room and the skill of the player so its kinda hard to simulate all that.

@@bangdrums But objectively easy to quantify in an informational way. As easy to quantify as direct hits are. If the skill of the player is hard to simulate and that makes the bleed test irrelevant then I'd argue striking the drum is irrelevant, too. Are we hitting dead center? Are we playing with a loose grip or a tight grip? How does that slightly off-center play into the polar pattern of the mic? In a test environment it's easy to hit the center but in actual application? Where's the floor tom in the room? Are we in a low-end null? I agree with you. That test wouldn't give us a definitive answer...but it gives us an idea. If the two mics are set up and one is 3db quieter in bleed from a cymbal above then we have a probable winner. If one has a resonance at 3.5kHz and the other doesn't then we've got an significant bit of info to move forward with. All that said, it's your channel and I SUPER appreciate everything you've got here. I can't wait for the next thing you put out. I'll be here watching (and probably not commenting because what started out as me trying to encourage you and thank you descended into something where - no matter what I say - I can't seem to make it sound as appreciative and non-aggressive as I feel)!

@@theDeathJoy ultimately, they both don’t sound great on floor toms. I ended up getting the Audix D4 and it’s wayyy better. Got the e904 for snare and it sounds really nice. And the e604 is nice on rack tom.

@@mikefarr6205 I agree. I'm a sucker for Audix mics on drums. I have read quite often people eventually leaning away from the D4 to the D2 though. They say the D4 is a bit too much on the lows.

@@theDeathJoy oh haha. That’s the whole reason I went with the D4. The Sennheisers and D2 can’t quite reproduce the lows well enough for my tastes. But to each their own. :) They really all are great mics. And the nice things about the e604s is that they are pretty much indestructible. Mine have taken many direct hits over the years and keep on rockin. Cheers!

  • @einjarjar

They sound really similar, because they use the same mic capsule model. However there is a difference. Because the shell is made of much stiffer aluminium, the 904 captures the transients way better. That's why it has "more high end". It just reads the wave faster and sharper.
