Comparison of Emphysema with Chronic Bronchitis

Please read and agree to the disclaimer before watching this video.
. Emphysema is usually present in smokers. Emphysema chronic bronchitis together are called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Dr. Mobeen Syed explains that airways are for the passage of air and the gas exchange occurs through air spaces (acini and lobules). The terminal part of airways is the terminal bronchioles. Alveolar duct, alveolar sac and alveoli are called acinus. 3-5 acinus connected together make a lobule.
Chronic bronchitis is the destruction and dilatations of the airways. Due to irritation, there is hyperplasia of the mucous secreting glands. Extra mucous can plug the airways which causes infections and atelectasis. However, emphysema is the destruction and dilatation of air exchanging tissue. Both conditions occur in the smokers. Chronic bronchitis is more clinical. The patient has chronic bronchitis if he/she has productive cough for 3 months to 2 years in a row. On the other hand emphysema has a morphological pattern.

Wow. It's my airways. I don't have asthma I have chronic bronchitis like my mother and grandmother. Yikes I've had "productive" cough for ten years now. When I was young it came and went. Mostly after a bad cold or flu. It could last for weeks. Now it is most days. And for the first time in my life I am living in a polluted city. Four years now.
