Comparison of 4 grinding machines for wood turners

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video Ronald Kanne tells about the pros and cons of 4 grinders. The 4 most commonly used grinding machines for wood turners. A bench grinder with a CBN wheel, the Tormek T8, Robert Sorby's Pro Edge and the Koch HT 4004.
About Ronald Kanne
Ronald is a wood turner in the Netherlands. He makes commissioned work and his own free work. And every week turns out to be a little too short to get all the work done... He also runs a webshop for other wood turners. It's called: www.dehoutdraaierij.nl. This webshop is in Dutch, English and German. The website that contains his own work is called www.ronaldkanne.nl. You will also find these links in the video.

    I am a retired neophyte turner who wants to purchase the optimal (for me) sharpening system. Your comparison was very informative using terms I understood....thank you. I am now a new subscriber from Santa Fe, New Mexico USA. Your wry sense of humor works just fine for me, some youtubers take all this sharpening quite seriously? You highlight the difference between the various processes.....my summary is all would work acceptably for most people.

    Thank you. I enjoyed watching your video and found it helpful. It was a very clear explanation of options including pros and cons and included the major different available choices: bench grinder with CBN wheel, Tormek, and Sorby Pro Edge. You didn't address cost of the different options, and maybe price depends on location. The focus was on wood turning, which was great. I'm a hobbyist with a small "shop", and would love but can't afford to have all four. I look for machines that can do more than one trick, including grinding and sharpening, which you touched on. Thanks again.

    Thank you for doing this deep dive comparison between these 4 systems - it was extremely valuable from an experienced wood turner who has used them all. I decided to go with the Sorby ProEdge for my first sharpening system as it is the smallest and can grind and sharpen both planes and chisels as well as turning tools and seems the easiest to setup and use repeatedly.

    This was very helpful, Ronald. Thank you! I have never been able to get consistently good results sharpening tools so got started using carbide and the thing holding me back from switching has been understanding how the grinders/sharpeners work and the basis of comparison between them. Before spending money on one of these I'm going to get some hands-on sharpening experience with a local instructor but now I know much better what to ask and what I'm looking for. Also, I think you are the only KZreadr I have found whose camera person regularly provides running commentary and will laugh with/at you from tine to time. It really is quite endearing and adds a lot of warmth to the channel. (Based on a small sample size - I've only just discovered the channel.) Anyway, great work and thanks!

    The dust from the CBN and diamond wheels floats around the shop like wood dust does. I do have a Tormek, and some day I will get a diamond wheel for it. The CBN eventually wears out, some thing like 5 or so years for a production turner. Diamond on a standard slow speed grinder will deteriorate because diamond can't take heat. On the Tormek, it is fine, and should last forever. They do have a liquid solution that you can use to capture most of the dust. I do love the leather strop wheel on the Tormek. A must for my skews, which I do use some times.... Saw Eric Loffstrom do a demo and he started by tapping his skew on the lathe bed. He sharpened it on a 60 grit CBN wheel, then stropped it on some leather, and then shaved his arm, very sharp. You do have to take that burr off....

    Thank you for taking the time to do this Ronald, it was very helpful. I have the ProEdge and I am just awaiting delivery of the Koch HT3000. Between the two machines and other slipstones and strops, I should be able to keep all my carving tools in tip top condition. A couple of things you didn't mention about the Koch system is that the thermal reactive sharpening does not create a burr, so you don't have to worry about removing it. Also, a slight disadvantage for some people is that the compound only works at 7 degrees Celsius or above, which could be an issue in the Winter if you work in an unheated shop.

    Great video Ronald, I have leant a great deal from your calm and informative presentation. If I were to buy one CBN wheel for woodturning what grit would you recommend and is there much advantage of 40mm vs 25mm wide? Thank you Paul

  • @ronaldkanne

    @ronaldkanne

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Paul, the big advantage when you wheel is 40 mm is that it is wide enough to roll the tool over the wheel. If you also have a white aluminium oxide wheel on your grinder I would suggest a 280 grit (approx.) wheel.

    Ronald: This is an excellent review of these four grinders and/or sharpening systems. I particularly appreciated your summary of the pros and cons. One element missing from the presentation, however, was cost comparison. While I don't know the retail prices of all four systems, I do know that the Tormek 8 costs just about what a quality secondhand lathe brings on the marketplace. I would speculate that a beginning woodturner considering a grinder/sharpener should expect to spend almost as much as what was paid for the main piece of equipment in the shop, i.e. the lathe...

    Thanks Nick. You are completely right of course. Price is a serious decision factor. And I did not think about putting prices in the video. On the other hand prices change, due to Brexit the ProEdge for example has risen considerably in price. But what is sure... none of the machines is cheap stuff... :-)

    There is a BIG advantage of having a flat bevel as opposed to a concave bevel, namely you should rub the bevel when turning with pretty much all tools…. Especially the skew and bowl/spindle gouges. Surely you know this..?

    Hi Haenz, depending on the Tormek type a 20 cm or 25 cm wheel. I'd choose 280 grit or 500 grit. 280 is a bit faster, 500 finer...

  • @peterballemy9929
    @peterballemy99292 жыл бұрын

    If you have a flat bevel it is impossible to 'rub the bevel' AND have the cutting edge go into to the work, as you will have to lift the WHOLE of the bevel off the wood to create an angle for the cutting edge to go into the workpiece. Flat grinds are used on the back of carpentry chisels or plane irons where the plane body sets the angle, not the bevel.

    I'm very surprised that the Koch green (polishing) stick is still produced. I had found multiple issues with this product many years ago. Surprised that it is still being used on a professional environment. The actual refinement of the particle size is 6 micron, which is an actual fine grind size. Never a finished surface. The felt wheel that was used had a definite depression when gouge pressure applied to it. Causing a radius to form on the cutting edge. Besides the new grind finish had no shine , whatsoever.

    I don't know of you are aware that both the diamond and cbn wheels are abrasive granules that are electro plated upon a steel wheel. They both will wear down to the point of not usable. For the price there are much more durable and effective cbn wheels that will be much more durable as well as grain structure to be optimal throughout the life of the wheel.

    Why do you say that heat is bad for HSS tools? I agree that the CBN wheel will give a much cleaner sharper edge than the standard bench grinder grey wheel, but that's to do with the fineness of the abrading particles, not the amount of heat generated. HSS can cope with really high temperatures without losing its temper, unlike high carbon steel, where if the tip is allowed to blue, it will become brittle and not hold an edge.
