Comparison: Conn Victor 80A & Connstellation 38A Cornets

Музыка

Two great cornets; a lovely Conn Victor 80 from 1954 (brass body with nickel silver slides [in excellent condition]) and a 1961 Connstellation 38A (coprion bell with nickel silver finish?) The little Victor is quite mouthpiece sensivite; .484 bore at and after the lower tuning slide leg and the bell is 4 5/16 inches. The Connstellation is a .485 bore (measured at the second slide, I believe) with a 4 13/16 inch bell. The Connstellation seems to take a little more air to play but also seems to have a slightly larger sound (larger volume).

Great video, Jonathan! Like all your videos, extremely informative! Well, thanks to you, I'm the new owner of the Connstellation. Many thanks! Looking forward to it.

The constellation sounds wide open maybe easier to play? I like both but the wide open sound is my preference…great job!

I think you're right. The Connstellation bore size is .484 or so; huge!! Almost the same size as a small tenor trombone.

Great comparison. Was that the Trent Austin t/f mouthpiece used when you went up high with the trumpet?

Usually I think I was using the TA Lead cup, usually with a Warburton backbore that is pretty tight; maybe the Qm? Not a shallow lead cup, it's actually a nice V but pretty tight throat. One of my favorite pieces, actually. For the last few months I've been using a Reeves 42C almost all of the time. It's the diameter of a Bach 7C but a bit shallower. Between Reeves and Trent Austin - not much else is needed. :)

Hi, great videos. I'm m in the uk and see there is a conn 38a constellation cornet for sale on USA eBay. I'm tempted but what is the going prices for these instruments? Don't want to overpay especially with the import tax.

Cliff; Great question. When I'm trying to figure a used instrument price real quick here's what I do: 1. Go to Ebay 2. Select 'advanced search' 3. Select 'Sold Listings' (these are actual sale prices for the past few weeks or months) 4. Fill in the blank; this search was "Conn Connstellation Cornet" and then select 'search'. It looks like the cornets, both the long and traditional shorter cornet are listed together; prices probably average around $450 or so. The Connstellation cornet I had produced a gorgeous tone but was a bit larger bore size than I like. Magnificent instrument though. I've thought several times I wish I had invested (and kept) most of the vintage horns I've had; they just keep going up in price. :) Hope this helps, Cliff. If you get it - let us know how you like it.

Jonathan Milam Thanks Jonathan, it's up for 550 dollars plus another 100 ish for me to get it to the UK. I play principal corner in Redbridge brass in London. I play on a Yamaha xeno which is a bigger bore than the conn anyway. I would use the conn in ten piece combos plus more trumperty solos in band. Shame it's so far away. Many thanks anyway and if I get I'll let you know. If you want to see me play type in cliff pask on KZread. Cheers.

Well, Cliff; good luck - whatever you decide. :) It's a unique horn. The Connstellations are just a different model. I don't like the Nickel-Silver finish, I don't like the large bore at the end of the horn... But a great player (and if you're playing principal cornet for Redbridge you are :) ) can really do special things with them. Interestingly, I found a vid recently of Phil Driscoll playing a Connstellation trumpet - and he was thrilled with it. :) Again, good luck and thanks for checking out my channel and posting. As they say in your part of the world... Cheers! And do let us know if/when you get one.

I don't know that song, Dazzlemaster. If it has a double high C# - I'm probably not able to play that and certainly not most days (that's pretty high range). :) Take care - and thanks for the request. If you can find a link to the song or the music written out add the link here, ok? Continued best wishes, Jonathan

Always enjoy your reviews Jonathan but you realize you are going to bankrupt all of us. Just kidding. All these horns are out there and , for the patient, remarkably cheap.
