I actually prefer plastic palettes. They’re lighter and they don’t rust. I’ve seen a few of those schmincke palettes rust quite quickly
I can’t believe the timing of your video as I just closed a deal on on eBay on a pre owned, but untouched Schmincke palette for the amazing price of £45 including postage. It was a buy it now listing, so no need to make a nervous/hopeful bid. Even in the big art store sales in the UK, the cheapest I found it was £73! Very happy with my purchase as going to the Norwegian Ffiords in April, and this will be coming along 😍🎨🖌🏴

That's great! I hope you have a wonderful trip and that your new palette makes painting easier... that was a great deal! 😊

I don’t ever see people use that water bottle…😂 just get a regular palette. This is just a gimmicky item
Top trick with the Windsor and Newton box. Take out the waterbottle and put it in your pocket and you now have a deep well for washes x just my two pennies worth x

I prefer the cannister in place. The white tank helps me check my mixes :)
I don't ever paint (less of all with watercolors) but I absolutely love tiny things so I enjoy your videos very much ❤️ thank you for sharing

I had the opportunity to purchase both for a pretty good bargain. Obviously the Schmincke Box is more sophisticated, but the mixing space is much smaller than the W&N, and the water bowl is almost uselessly small, as is the water container. In terms of usability, the W&N box is much more practical and the Schmincke box is more of a nice, but less usable piece of jewelry.
I just bought the Winsor & Newton palette. I preferred it as it contains everything you need in one little box to go paint. Except space for a water brush, pencil and sharpener! However, I’m hoping I can remove four of the pans leaving space on one side for the pencil and sharpener and the small water brush. Guess I won’t know until I get the set. If they won’t go in the box I can pop then in a small bag and rubber band them to the outside 🙂
I don't have the W&N plastic one, but I do have their version of the schmincke one you have, exactly the same but i guess its 25 years old and they stopped doing it alongside all their other heavy weight japanned sets. I also have their bijou field box with 18 1/4 pans which is the cutest thing. I manage to get 14 half pans in your schmincke style one by using the smaller W&N or Daler Rowney pans, taking out the fixing rods and using magnetic tape instead. They will fit portrait 5 along the top and bottom rows. 😉
I love the Winsor and Newton field box.

It’s a classic! 😊
A useful comparison, thank you. I have full pan W&N watercolours I'd like to put in to the W&N field box; do you think they would fit? I'm hoping maybe six whole pans. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the info! I really was confused which one to buy tho 😅

@@LeslieStroz - very well said! In general the art community has less of those kind of unhelpful comments, but sadly vigilance is still required. ❤️
I wish they just sell the box as I wish to use colours of my choice

If you want only the Winsor & Newton box I would get the Cotman (student) version, which is much cheaper. If you want just the box of the metal one look into Whiskey Painters and Cornellison who both sell similar ones empty. 😊
I have an old Kuretake set I bought in Japan 30 years ago that is very similar to the Windsor & Newton box. The water bottle is a bit smaller so there is room on the side for a pencil and brush and there is no separate water pot. I almost always carry a bottle of drinking water around with me now - certainly if I'm walking any place where I would stop and paint - so this type of palette really doesn't make sense anymore.
where should we buy the winsor and newton field pocket palate in the us?
Thanks for this. I am still on the fence for either of them so I enjoyed your side-by side review. I like painting on enamel and I like the light weight of the W&N. I guess you can't have it all, huh? 😂 Or maybe get both! I wish they only sold the tins, so I could use my own pans. Quick question: can you fit full pans in the W&N one? Thanks again!

Hi Berolina, Yes! The WN will fit full pans. 😊
I’ve got the W and N and I really like it.
Thx so much!
I'd love to hear you talk more about care of the metal and rust

The main thing is to keep it dry. I always leave it open after painting until it’s dry.
The schmincke pallet was my unicorn palette and I adore it, but I don't reach for it very often at all because i am one of those that prefers to have a very limited palette of colours and a LOT of mixing space, and just the two wells is almost impossible for me to use. I don't own the Winsor palette, and although it has been in my basket list for some time, I probably won't buy it. Mostly because i own a fraiser price box that i altered and is by far my favourite travel all in one palette and pretty much does everything the Winsor box will but with more sturdy construction.
Such a great 👍
My Schmincke palette was left unused with water in it for about a year (sorry) as I was using other palettes. But when I went to use it I found the metal had expanded, and the metal cap was rusty. I had to throw it away. So don't leave it with the water inside, people. :) I kept the metal water container though and the tiny palette fits inside perfectly. :)
I think I like the wn box but the schminke color
Thank you for this comparison! Schminke cost a loooooot

everything nowadays cost a loooot
It would be good if they designed them without a water container or little brush. We can carry our own. And it would leave room to make the palette more useable.
Schminke is way to expensive in India it’s around 200usd while wnn is only 30usd
