Good Day. I have an question. In your how to use rosin video there is the rosin that comes with the violin. The round rosin with the hole in it. Just purchased and starter violin that came with that type of rosin. Question is: how the heck do you use it?! I am clueless.

I know what you mean. I’ve tried instruments back to back that basically had the same tonal ‘character’ with the same strings, although one was brighter and the other one was mellower with a little more depth to the tone.

Hey Alison, thanks for all the great content - loving our channel and books! I'm thinking of upgrading to the FM Concert or Artist from the Stentor Student 2 - would love to hear your thoughts on if that is a big enough jump as an upgrade or if you'd recon I should rather hold out for another year or two, save up and upgrade to the Master.

  • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

Thats a difficult one as there is no point upgrading twice from the Artist, then to the Master in a years time... If you can hold out, then that might be an option, but, if you are entering intermediate territory, then the SII is only going to hold you back. If I were to choose between the Concert and Artist, I would choose the Artist as its a little nicer and sweeter to me. The Concert is very loud and harsh - for me that is. That might appeal to you or someone else. Having said all that, the Artist really is a good violin and probably the best of the collection for the performance and price. Of course the Master and Soloist are much better, but for the overall price point and what you get for that price, the Artist wins - if you see what Im saying. If you want an advanced violin anyway, then of course the Artist will be no good and the Master is where its at. I know I have offered up no help here haha, but hopefully I have said enough to help you decide? If you do buy a violin and use one of the links under my videos (any of the FM review videos) then I will receive a little commission (doesnt cost you more) for helping you choose :)

@@TheOnlineViolinTutor Thanks, no that is very helpful. I was leaning towards the Artist and your description is definitely more what I'm looking for compared to a more loud and bright Concert. It will be quite a number of years before I'm in advanced territory, at the moment prepping for grade 2 :) and aiming to venture into intermediate in the next 2-3 years so I think I'll get good value for some time to come out of the Artist. I'll be sure to use your link when I do order it, thanks for the advice!

2:50 I agree. I wouldn't think that one is better than the other. I have a $29 (USD) violin made in China, and it has a one-piece back. I also have a $75 (USD) violin made in China, and it has a two-piece back.

Hi, I'm looking for an inexpensive violin, for advanced level, for the purpose of playing outdoors and for practicing when on travels (where I wouldn't want to risk a more expensive one). It's important to me that the instrument will be lightweight and on the smaller scale of 4/4 size violins (my fingers are not long). Do you think the 'artist' would be good enough for that purpose? Do you have any recommendation for something better that would match my needs (around the same budget)? Thanks.

Ok after listening 🎧 I heard what you heard, could the transfer of sound one little metallic the other woody 🤓 sorta speak, I wonder if merely swapping the tails would change them both to sound like the other🤔?

At do you think about the aluminum tail pieces as opposed to ebony? I bought a very nice vintage to repair, well they took the stripped of furniture violin added aluminum 😭 I think it should always be wood, because the slightest change can make a world of difference in sound. I noticed the artist has ebony tail piece . Let's hear it 👍 play on Princess 🌹🌹 and thank you for sharing

I am one who knows absolutely nothing about paying a violin, but I do play a little bit of guitar and piano. I am very intrigued with you and look forward to purchasing your beginners course, once I have purchased a violin. Quite frankly, I do not yet have the ear to noticeably appreciate the different tonal qualities between the lower-end Tower Strings or the higher-priced Fiddlernan. That being said, I am not opposed to spending what is necessary for a desirable beginners violin. Do you recommend the upgrade to the geared tuners, and if so, would you recommend the Wittner Fine Tuned or the Perfection Planetary Geared tuner? What about a carbon fiber bow?

Hi, if you want something no rubbish, but also do not want to break the bank, but something that you can 'grow' into and something that will definatly not hinder your learning, then the Artist is a good one to go for. ALso, the Master, but that is a little more - but if you do plan on making this more long term and feel you might be more serious with the violin, then go for the Master, but the Artist is a good one to start with that sits slap bang in the middle. As for tuners, you dont need geared ones. These violins have been specifically carved to work with the peg box along with the fine tuners. Violins do not need them - unlike guitars, as the strings dont have far to go, move or stretch and are much much thinner - compared to guitars, so its not the same on that front. Hope that answers your questions?

Hello, I have watched and enjoyed all your reviews of fiddlerman violins. But, I am looking for my first fiddle.....a quality at a good price to play Bluegrass, Western Swing, Texas and Cajun styles. Fiddleshop tech support recommended the Artist. I am considering that, but also the Concert. I would like your opinion. Thank you. Steve

I would personally go for the Artist as I just like it all round.l The Concert is great too, but it it quite loud and very powerful - which is not a bad thing, just my personal preference. If YOU like that about the Concert, then you should go for that - as I say and always will say, violins are VERY personal. From a technical standpoint, the Concert is louder and more powerful, so that may help or hinder you depending on your preference to this. The Artist is sweeter. If you want to play fiddle music, then I might (personally) recommend the Concert - however, I dont doubt that Pierre and Michael would let you swap to the Artist if you were not happy with the Concert. Having said that, always go with your gut on these things... Lastly, if you do go ahead, if you would be so kind as to use one of my links under the videos when you purchase, that would be hugely appreciated.😀

Both are similar, but the Concert is LOUD! Probably not (in my opinion), the best choice for an orchestra as one wants to blend in and not stand out.

@@TheOnlineViolinTutor I ended up ordering the Apprentice. I went over budget, but I think this is a better starter to avoid aggravation. After years of my old violin going to attic to storage unit then in my shed, it’s a little off. I cannot find a good luthier to check it out. The music store said it wasn’t worth having it refurbished, but violins are not their specialty. So instead of being stuck, I decided to spoil myself a bit and get a new one. I am looking forward to your online lessons. I hope I can pick it back up after so many years! I used you affiliate link, so I hope you get credit for it! • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

Either or. The Concert (for me) was quite a loud violin - not volume, but more projection. That isnt my personal preference, but if you like something with more projection to it, then this would be the one. To be clear, there is NOTHING wrong with projection at all - it is just not my preference as I prefer something softer and sweeter as it suits my playing style and choice of music more.
