Comparing the Differences Between Thailand and Vietnam

An Honest Perspective of Comparing the Differences between Thailand and Vietnam in regards to lifestyle, infrastructure, post Vietnam perspective. Also I desperate needed a break from Thailand and travel is nowhere near what it used to be before the pandemic, so neighboring countries are much more easily to travel to with less of the red tape/bureaucracy. The various infrastructure systems, food, culture and soft power in Thailand are much superior and world famous. 🙏🙏 Mass transit systems in Thailand are constantly linked both in the capital and other provinces. It's easy to travel anywhere. The roads are much better than Vietnam but in Vietnam it's not what you think. Vietnamese people are very undisciplined, lack public conscience and good attitude. 😂😂 There are hundreds of times more waste than Thailand. There is no waiting in line or queuing to get in the bus or buy tickets like in Thailand. Thailand is cleaner than VN. Love from Spain 💋💋

@@user-wc4bw4yp6j I haven't noticed that at all. I have noticed a lot of angry yellow shirt Thais bashing Vietnam, claiming Thailand is better in every way and trying to find fault with all the progress Vietnam has made. I have to snicker at those comments though, because they ignore the fact that Thailand's development has basically stalled, while Vietnam went from being a desperately poor, war torn country in the 70s to a country that is fast catching up to Thailand. As of right now, it's only 10-15 years behind and within 5 years, it will be almost as developed. Of course, both countries have faced similar hurdles when it comes to expanding their infrastructure, with corruption being a principle one. Vietnam has also shot ahead of Thailand when it comes to the development of expressways and ROAD tunnels. Thailand has managed to complete only 535km of expressway in 41 years (with another 300+ km under construction since 2016), while Vietnam has opened over 1000km in just 15 years and several hundred more either under construction or about to begin construction. Thailand has just ONE road tunnel down in Betong (underpasses are not included in this metric, I'm referring to tunnels bored through hills or mountains) while Vietnam already has around 10, most in the central part of the country near Da Nang and Hue, the remainder in Quy Nhon and the north, between Hanoi and Lao Cai. All of these, except for the Hai Van Pass tunnel, 6.1km in length, were built in the last 10 years. Thailand, particularly Bangkok, is ahead when it comes to urban public transportation, with Vietnam struggling to complete its subway systems. Hanoi just opened its first line end of 2021 after more than 10 years of construction. Both countries have had issues completing public infrastructure works on time, with Thailand struggling to get the Thai-Chinese high speed rail on track, and is also pretty slow on the duplification of its existing cross-country rail network. Certain expressway projects in both countries have been slow, such as the Mekong Delta one south of Saigon, which was only completed recently after 13 years of construction, and Thailand spending more than 6 years already so far on 2 expressways (motorways) that should have been completed within 2-3 years, but will now have taken 8 years by the time they're finished (Bang Yai to Kanchanaburi and Bang Pa-in to Nakorn Ratchasima). No word on when, if ever, there will be an expressway built from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or south from Cha-am to the Malaysian border. My guess is maybe in 30 years it might finally be possible to drive on a motorway standard road from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I feel there is far more animosity against Thais amongst Cambodians and Laotians than Vietnamese (which is reflected in social media comments I've seen) due to obvious factors including Thailand sharing borders with these countries (but not Vietnam), a lot of migrant workers from these countries working in Thailand, recent and historical territorial disputes and so forth. Vietnam has not had as much contact with Thailand as Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar have. For example, the Cambodians burned the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh in 2003. They've also staged many protests and trashed the Vietnamese embassy in Phnom Penh over the years. Thais were banned from entering Cambodia for a few weeks in 2003 (which is when I visited Cambodia for the first time) due to the downgrading of relations, which started after a Thai actress claimed Angkor Wat belongs to Thailand. There was tension again in 2011 when the land surrounding Preah Vihear/Khao Phra Wiharn temple was being fought over and ultimately awarded to Cambodia. Many Laotians, despite their close cultural and ethnic similarities to Thais, find Thais to be arrogant, stubborn and look down upon them. These Laotians feel that the Chinese (and to a lesser extent the Vietnamese) have done far more for the country developmentally, than Thailand has and of course they would be right. If you visit Laos as a Thai, you'll mostly be warmly welcomed, but one does have to be careful not to offend, as Laotians seem to take greater offense by critical comments made by Thais, than by Chinese or Vietnamese or other foreigners. I think all peoples in the region have a short fuse, with Cambodians the worst (most easily offended), followed by Laotians, then Thais and finally Vietnamese, in that order.

In fact, the police make it worse by blocking off intersections and forcing motorists to do dangerous u-turns instead! Your very brief stint in HCM was seeing Vietnam through rose colored lenses. As another person said, get out of D1 and it's a different place. Infrastructure is worse than Thailand. I lived in Vietnam for almost 2 years. Headed back in August to visit. But I'll take Thailand over Vietnam every time. People, food, and culture are what I'm basing my opinion on. (my gf is Vietnamese, and she's well aware of the differences) Sure, it's based on perception and experience, and whatever generality or sweeping statement I make will have countless points and counterpoints, but here's one example - the value of human life and consideration of others. I'm aware that statistics show Thailand's per capita traffic death is higher, but I don't believe a single statistic coming out of Vietnam. You can find countless videos of Vietnamese traffic deaths - traffic laws only exist in Vietnam so that police can make a living by forcing bribes for alleged violations. Road rules and common sense don't exist for Vietnamese drivers. The bigger vehicle does whatever it wants, regardless of laws. In Thailand the largest number of deaths are drunk young men on motorbikes. A tragedy, to be sure, but more readily addressable than a wholesale cultural attitude of "to hell with anyone else but me'. I've driven from Phuket to Chiang Rai many times on motorbikes and in cars and never feared for my safely like I do in Vietnam.

As a Thai born and raised here. We really don't compare our country with neighbors. It's great to hear the sense that we're on the right track to improve our infrastructures. Thailand has changed much in the modern way for the last 20 years. I believe it's a challenge since we have an equal/strong political opposition. It turns out to be good because they never stop criticizing the current government. Push the elites to prove themselves that they're not useless.

The walking road and infrastructure you're enjoying is only good in central districts like District 1 and District 3, or new development areas like Thủ Thiêm ward in District 2. Other Districts like 10, 5, 6, 4, Gò Vấp are a mess for walking. We also don't have subways so you must take a Grab, Taxi or be forced to ride a bike, scooter... With such a busy, crowded and reckless driving culture of Vietnam, i don't think most foreigners can handle it.

Some things cannot be compared. - The sidewalks in Indonesia's CBD are very good. So when Indonesian friend said that Thai sidewalks were better, it made me confused. The reason is there are not sidewalks outside the Indonesia's CBD while Thailand has sidewalks everywhere. Despite the bad condition, it's better than nothing. - Many areas in Thailand have better sidewalks than in this VDO but tourists may not want to walk because there are no trees. While the areas where have trees may have the bad sidewalks, so tourists came to the conclusion that Thai sidewalks are not good. - Thailand have not got the big trees on the sidewalks like in the VDO, but Thailand has many bigger parks.

I'm Thai and what they said is the truth my friend but what you said is the truth too but all of you guys never look at the fact that's Why it's not perfect and not good. I have to tell you the fact that all the sidewalks and Plus all the roads in Bangkok will never be in perfect condition my friend, never ever! Why? And why cannot conpare to another country? It's because all countless people in Bangkok my friends, countless people have to live in small area, just Thai people alone in Bangkok already more than 10+ millions, people from neighbors countries more than 10+ millions, 40+ millions tourists around the world just per year(before covid), and all of them used Bangkok 24hrs even at the sidewalk they still use to sell something, if you look at the roads it's always destroyed and fix and destroyed and fix all year long, the road I used to go to school since I was a kid that I saw they fixed and they continues to fix it until now I'm 40 and now they still fix the same road just different areas. Now I'm growing up and my job is about building so I understood that it's a sign of a big city that people used 24hrs my friend even when you fix the road it's really really hard because you have to block the road at 3 am until 5-6 in the morning to fix otherwise your work would cause 2-3 hours traffic jams for the people at the day time even you blocked just 1 out of 4 lanes and even you blocked the road at 3 am sometime your work still cause 1-2 kms traffic jam because it's the time many teenagers just got out of their pubs. And when you finish here there are more than 10 areas in just one Road are waiting for you to fix. Lol And ofcouse you couldn't fix all areas at once because when you blocked just 1 out of 4 lanes to fix in just only 1 area at after midnight there are still countless of people wanted to screamed at you. Lol And ofcouse if you use the roads all the time like these and many of bad people overweight their truck the fix is year by year my friend there are no road in this world could resist these type of torture. I know it's my dream too my friend but let's say "it's Bangkok" tells all. Lol and that's why I said Bangkok couldn't compare to another countries, Why? Because you couldn't compare the place that you could fix whenever you want against the place that you hardly have a chance to fix with small amout of time and all of them that you fixed ready to destroy again in the near future.

  • @onalonan

    @onalonan

I forgot to mention that's why many side walk and many road destroyed, it's because the land and soil problem too and it's because many big building and many skytrain base and even all sky toll ways, they are all stay in the same place and at the same level when you built because you have to use the stakes but noone noticed that the land collapsed every year and now the road and everything collapsed down with together with the land except all countless building, all countless sky toll way base, all countless skyline base that covered nearly all of Bangkok, now you understand why. If there are just a little city with small building and road you would never notice that the land's collapsed every year.

And of course it's never ever about hospitality, this problem is in Bangkok and Bangkok is a Multi-language, Multi-race, Multi-relegion because we all live together and because we all Thai people respect any kinds of human. So everyone should know about those problem because it's already effect to them. Just simple as that.

As long as Vietnam is still ruled by the oppressive and exploitive Communist regime, her potential remains greatly diminished. For any 1% that wants to stay, 99% of the population wants to get out, and many have risked their lives doing just that (for example, 39 doomed lives found in UK container truck recently on the news, and that's only what's been reported), unfortunately. Yet another shocking and also recent example is that during the Covid pandemic when almost all countries assisted their citizens with financial aids in one form or another, the corrupt and murderous Vietnamese Commie regime saw it just another opportunity not to help but to exploit its ruled citizens even more, essentially making money over the corpses of its citizens by presumably killing at least 30K of them, due to misdiagnosis and being and cramped into barbwired unhygenic living quarters for isolations, so that they had to sleep on the concrete floors, with inadequate food, water, or medicine, like animals, with the fake nostril Covid test kits, mislabeled as approved by World Health Organization (WHO) in Việt Á scandal, colluded by at least 4 different government agencies (Y Tế , Khoa Học, Công Nghệ, Quân y) and the top Politburo members, including Nguyễn Phú Trọng, Phạm Minh Chính, Nguyễn Xuân Phúc. Murderous Vietnamese Commie regime even had a thug murdered Christian pastor Giuse Trần Ngọc Thanh, like it has done with many other pastors across the nation. There is a reason why the current Commie Vietnam ranks at the bottom of the world in freedom of speech and freedom of the press, barely above Commie China and Commie North Korea. Similarly, its passport ranks at the bottom, 89th out of 111 countries for a reason, barely above North Koea 104th rank. even below many African nations. For comparison, South Korea 2nd rank. That's what Republic of South Vietnam would have likely been ranked among at least the top 10 had it not been invaded and occupied by the North Vietnamese Commie terrorists, aided by Commie Soviet and Commie China. Travelers to Vietnam in her current form (not at all like this before the Communists took over) should keep this in mind. Behind the beauty of the land and smiling faces at popular tourist destinations, there are a lot of darkness and sorrow, horror, and sufferings all over the country.

love your comparing video, but I'm Saigonese, and Thailand is much better than us for sure, at least they have freedom, the VCP destroyed our structure and facility for sure all of the organizing you see is just a slice of the big bread, fresh and good in the outside but rotten inside, just keep exploring and make your own choice. Anyway, Asian hates comparing each other due to nationalism, and CCP claims each country's culture from Theirs which is why we don't want to look like or be like another Asian. Extreme nationalism was a big due in Asia be careful when you make a comment or compare it makes complicates the situation.

More freedom in Thailand? How? Until recently, Thailand had the world's strictest and longest running mask mandate. Vietnam hasn't officially lifted its mandate but the locals don't give a crap and have stopped wearing them voluntarily even indoors. It helps that TV news presenters don't wear masks on screen, which they do in Thailand.

@@therock8224 wow, only mask mandate make you think the whole problem was that? amazing, good point, supper good. Did you know why they don't care about that, the big scandal about the kit test in Vietnam makes the government lose their credit to the whole nation why they make an out point to cool down the rage of citizens, not the real freedom like you said. You are not even Vietnamese to understand the situation here, don't try to point out something you have no idea about.

@minzo nakul No it's not. Complete and utter nonsense. Vietnamese wore masks until 3 months ago, when cases started dropping. Thais are simply easier to control and more brainwashed. Mask wearing is useless - it's faith based and doesn't work.

Bangkok had the opportunity to become more organized when the Americans set up their bases in Thailand during the Vietnam war in the 60s and 70s, but instead of helping to redesign Bangkok, all the Americans did was to help build two highways, one called the "Friendship Highway" from Saraburi to the Lao border at Nong Khai and the second one being route 304 through the forests and hills of Khao Yai from Chachoengsao to Nakorn Ratchasima.

@@Lol-ok9kl , to be fair the French did design the urban layout. But could we say that the French built Washington DC because Pierre L'Enfanr developed the urban plan? Did the French build Quebec City, Montreal, and New Orleans. The same narrative is not used in the West, it is used in places like Vietnam because somehow French means good. It is a very Western perspective. I have never heard anybody say that New Orleans is beautiful because the French built it. Americans would take an exception to that statement

I visited Saigon several years ago and now that you mentioned it I agree that the sidewalks are kind of wider, but not everywhere the whole infrastructure in Saigon is more dated and less maintained if compared to Bangkok some stuff looks like it was not renovated since the French left of course Bangkok is richer so that could explain the discrepancy the traffic is much more intimidating than in Bangkok at least Bangkok had above ground street crossings, skywalks and BTS stations that you can use to cross the street in Saigon you just have to rely on yourself and pray that you cross the street without being hit overall I liked Saigon very much and had a wonderful time there if not for the war Saigon could be even more beautiful and fascinating, maybe even better than Bangkok I think Saigon and Vietnam in general have so much potential and the Vietnamese could chieve great things if they do everything right

There are many people here who say Vietnam's infrastructure is very bad. Do you know why? Because Vietnam's infrastructure was destroyed by the number of bombs (three times the total number of bombs used in WW2, = 270 times the Little Boy atomic bombs) dropped by the US. And Thailand has more than 100 years of peace to develop its economy, so all comparisons are lame.
