Comparing the cut in tall grass - 54" cut Craftsman vs 54" cut Scotts by John Deere.

I'm comparing two tractors of equivalent size to see the cutting difference. I'm running in tall grass that grew for one month in mid Texas summer. One tractor is a Craftsman GT 5000 and the other is a Scotts 2554 25hp 54" cut commercial grade equivalent to the sister John Deere gt235. The Scotts is a commercial grade machine capable of running into the thousands of hours, the craftsman is a home owner model that will be doing good to reach 1000 hrs of use before it's worn out. It's unusual to find the craftsman tractors with any where near 1000 hours. Most I have seen are in bad shape near 300 to 400. I have seen the commercial Scotts and GT and x series JD tractors with well over 1000 hrs and still working great. There is a big difference in price and quality.

    both did surprisingly well considering that the cut height was WAY too low and you were moving too fast for that much grass; and that's a lot of grass. If you are going to have to make more than one pass, the first should be at max height. Then lower for subsequent passes. Both those mowers looked and sounded like they work well and I would like to see them under normal conditions.. Good video, Thanks.

    Tim Owen I usually pull deflector up when needed, sometimes I tie a rope on it so I can pull up when needed and drop if blowing towards cars or people. As for the gator blades, they do cut great but I like the high lift blades that throw grass out faster and get it out from under the deck as quick as possible. And with the heavy gauge high lift blades I can add weld to the areas that wear fastest and extend the life of my blades x 4. The G100 was actually a commercial grade (sister tractor) to the Scotts Iv got in this vid. They are very well built machines. Some people confuse that tractor with the L series because it has same hood, but L series is complete junk.

    I suspected that these were both made by American Yard Products, the long-time provider of Craftsman. The difference in cut though is remarkable, especially noting the lower RPM of the Scotts machine. However, the blade speed is the important factor. And, there must be the torque available to keep them spinning when loaded. This is me corrected. Great video...

  • @GTObearclaw1

    @GTObearclaw1

    5 жыл бұрын

    msclecarcrzy This is the Scotts 2554 that was made for several years I believe starting around the early 2000’s if I remember correctly. This is a tricky model to deal with because some years were commercial duty and after a few years of production they started using the John Deere l120 model and that’s a junk tractor so you really need to do a little research before buying one. Yes, this Scotts it a much better tractor overall. It’s hard to tell by the video but the way it operates and the feel of unit is much better than the craftsman. Components are better quality as well. And mainly the transmission and deck are way better.

  • @GTObearclaw1

    5 жыл бұрын

    msclecarcrzy I find at least one or two of these each year. I mainly look for the bigger 54” tractors like this. They are more fun to use. With everyone wanting zero turns these days there are a lot of people that are switching simply just to get the “faster” zero turn machines. Watch the sale adds during winter time when nobody wants tractors and you will find they stay posted longer and the prices will usually be lower because they are out of season and sometimes during mid winter you have the upper hand and also the time to Negotiate because it’s doubtful the mower will sell fast during mid winter. So that’s the best time to hunt if you know what your looking for. Yes this model has the kohler Command and usually the kohler with oil cooler so that’s another plus. I agree the courage engine is not in the same class. The commands are one of the most durable engines ever put on a mower. The twin cylinder courage engines are not terrable but will not hold up to the usage of a command. And the single cylinder courage engines are complete trash. Kohler really got egg on there face with that model. Quite possibly the worse engine ever made. And that’s taking Tecumseh into consideration. You can also widen your search to include Sabre tractors. During the same years the good heavy duty Scotts were being built, John Deere was also building the Sabre units and they are exactly the same machines but only for a few years before they were also changed over to the low end tractors and I believed quickly phased out most likely due to low sales. But for a few years you can get the heavy duty Sabre and no issues with finding parts because it’s actually a John Deere tractor same as the Scotts (for the few years we are talking about) so parts are no problem.

    msclecarcrzy on the topic of the command, the craftsman in this video was purchased for 50$ with a locked up engine. It would not budge when trying to crank with a hot battery. It had no oil on the dip stick, so I filled it with oil and I took the top cover off the engine so I could get to the flywheel teeth and used a pry bar to move the flywheel tooth by tooth until the engine started to move with more easy, then I used a Cheater bar and socket to turn the crank several rotations until it was really moving good. I was surprised to find the engine was turning and there didn’t seem to be anything unusual going on inside. “Usually when ran low on oil there is internal damage and getting a full rotation is not possible. So I tried starter again and it fired up and ran smooth. I couldn’t believe it and was expecting it to fail any minute but it just kept going strong. So I kept it a few years and have now been mowing with it for almost 4 years and no engine issues other than I had to replace the carburetor about a year ago. But that old kohler Command V twin is going strong to this day. I’m confident it’s going to be just fine now so I might sell it and make a little room in the shop for another project.

For a few years they were built by Deere and Deere used the commercial line tractors and just painted and badges them as Scott’s and Sabres. Only for a few years and if you know the right models you can get a very good tractor for a great deal because most folks don’t know the difference and consider all Scott’s to be the regular residential quality machines.
