Cognitive (namely cognitive neuroscience) and Biological approaches are difficult to compare since the cognitive also tied thought to anatomical structures as in the case of Broca. From what I understand, the cognitive approach is more interested in modeling the internal mental processes between stimulus, response, and other observable functions (ie. memory) as opposed to linking them with anatomical structures ex. amygdala, broca's area, the homunculus, etc which I assume fall under the biological approach. Is Broca and tulvig considered biological or cognitive?

@@AS-pb2rk Yeah, they can be a little trickier to compare, especially as there is some overlap with the inclusion of cognitive neuroscience under the cognitive approach topic. Good comparisons here relate to the scientific methodology of their research methods for both, and interesting differences can lie in determinism (cog. = soft determinism, and bio = hard (bio) determinism) but this one can be challenging to explain. I would lean towards a comparison in terms of practical application - i.e how well they can treat mental disorders.

@@AS-pb2rk in terms of Broca and Tulving - because the cognitive approach includes the heading 'cognitive neuroscience' then both these illustrate mental processes related to a biological process. However, both these studies could also be used to illustrate the biological approach too.
Amazing video. Helped with someone who was struggling to fully understand each approach! Would love to see this applied to the Cognitive, Psychodynamic and Humanistic approaches!!

Hello Tom, thank you very much for sharing the free resources. They are excellent indeed. Quick question. Have you created any Psychology podcasts please? I currently use Spotify and your resources in audio or video format would be excellent indeed. Please let me know and thanks again. Best Stephen

Could you compare the psychodynamic and humanistic approach?
@BearitinMIND
Ай бұрын
Compare them in the following ways: Research Methods - both unscientific/unfalsifiable/subjective Debate (nature/nurture). Psy.dyn - BOTH, but mainly nature - puts emphasis on innate biological instincts. HUM - BOTH, but mainly nurture. Debate (FW/D) - Psy.Dyn = psychic determinism (Freud saw free will as an illusion). HUM = free will - active agents/choice of behaviours Practical Application - both offer therapies - but differ in their focus. Psy.Dyn - therapist as expert who is the only one who can interpret the underlying meaning/dream analysis. Whereas HUM uses Client centred therapy which sees the the client as the expert and the therapist guiding them to help them understand.
I’m really not sure what to study? Should I memorise that table for instance or is there a better way to do it as they could give you any combination of approaches in an exam question

Good question - a comparison type question is designed to test how deeply you have understood each of Approaches not just as each individual approach but in terms of their similarities and differences - so there is not short cut around it. If you know each of the Approaches very well, then you simply need to memorize the categories by which you can compare them (e.g. debate, practical application etc). So, make sure you know each of the Approaches in terms of evaluation - then practise actively recalling the categories that you would use in an essay. Hope that helps :)
