It’s always funny how some videos assume you only have one or the other. In my most recent travel I found taking about 50/50 between my phone and professional full frame camera. Realistically these days everyone starts with taking photos on their phone and, as you mentioned, upgrade to a more advanced dedicated camera. I also had a similar experience to yours in UAE and ended up taking way more photos with my phone while there. Thank you for your videos..!

I think it's more realistic to compare smartphones with small point & shoot cameras. Probably before 2013-ish, lots of tourists/travellers carry point and shoot cameras for documenting their trips. These days? That's a very rare sight. Smartphones serve their purpose: pocketable, takes great pictures (at least for social media purpose), can do image editing on it, not that expensive, multiple cameras with different focal-length lenses, etc. Sure, photography enthusiasts who demand more high quality images still stick with their cameras.

As a landscape photographer, I sometimes take landscape photos with my phone if I happen across a wonderful scene with the perfect weather and don't have my full frame DSLR with me, but as you mentioned, there is a loss of quality. I've mentioned this before and had phone fans jump on me claiming that phones are just as good. They are if that is what you're happy with, but if you're planning to print big and want the best quality you can get, you're just not going to get it with a tiny sensor and lens. That said, I have seen some absolutely wonderful photographers that prefer using their phones.

When I first started out with photography in the 1970s, I did a lot of City stuff, no one ever bothered me, ever. Today it's different, why? I've tried using my Canon dslr in a newly opened Shopping Mall, I had hassle ever corner I turned, why? Yet I saw people with their phones shooting away no hassle. Yes I use both a phone and a 'professional' looking 'real camera'. What are people (so called security staff) so worried about, when they spot someone using a real camera, saying you can't use 'that' in here, or I need permission. What is the difference? You tell me, 'cause I just don't get it. It's a thing that needs serious debate. Great video, many thanks.

  • @mandrews817

The difference is that it's much harder to stop a phone. Security would have to ask you to open your cellphone's photo app to prove you were taking pictures if they ever caught you, and it's usually not worth the hassle.

My number one reason against the street phonography movement, is that I prefer to use something built for purpose. Just because something can do it, doesn't mean it's right for the job. I hate how long it takes to open up the camera, and adjust settings on my phone. One of the benefits of Fujifilm is being able to set everything even when the camera is off. This is why I bring my X70 and leave my phone at home most days.

  • @-grey

    10 ай бұрын

@@sevdarasdaras I can choose aperture, if I want more blur or more things in focus. Speed, if I want to sacrifice light to freeze motion or gain light for a scene that isn't fast moving. ISO, I can sacrifice clarity to gain better vision in the dark or utilise the available light in a way to optimise image clarity to take photos in the dark that aren't mushy or fuzzy. I can chose if I want auto focus to activate for the scene or if I want it to switch into manual focus mode where I have it set to a certain distance. An example being: I see a scene of where I want to get everything from 3m to the horizon in focus - My dog playing on a hike. I know by the lighting conditions that I can wheel the dial on my lens to 5.6, flip the focus switch to M turn the camera on, point and click. Got it. Dog playing, frozen action, nice mountain background. That's all, and I can do that all with both hands simultaneously BEFORE the camera is on or up to photograph the scene. Two dials, two fingers, point and snap. No relying on auto focus speeds. I just let the camera handle the shutter speed and ISO to balance the light for my desired focus distance and the exposure setting I always have preset. I can get the shot off in a second or less, usually in less time than it takes to even get a good grip on my phone. With phones I'm swiping up to open the camera, holding to lock focus at my desired distance while hoping that it got what I meant, and then swiping down on a sun icon a few times to get the exposure right, or wheeling drag dials around one menu at a time. By that time I've already lifted the phone up for the photo for so long I've either missed the shot or ruined it by unsubtly pointing a phone at it because now my dog came over to see what I'm playing with. Another example: my kid is taki g their first steps towards me in a dimly lit room. I know I can't rely on auto exposure to give me a fast enough shutter speed to not have blurry motion, and I want the focus to readjust as they come towards me. I flip the focus switch to C and the Shutter dial to 1/500, and the mode dial to burst mode before it's even on or up to my eye. The camera adjusts everything, I just hold the shutter and take a bunch of perfectly in-focus images of my kid walking towards me. Muscle memory for physical controls allows me to get to the best settings faster. Tapping or swiping through menus will never be as quick as just flipping a tangible switch.

Cameras usually give you better image quality and easier to edit files, while phone cameras are just convenient and phone images start to fall apart the more you edit and in low light phone images get much noisier. Computational images helps in a phone image but still looks like a phone digital often over sharpened image. In good light only, phone images looks acceptable for many uses such as vacation shots and social media.

Roman, I use my phone to replace wide angle lens and keep a prime on the camera for walk about and another for portraits . The kit lens is all well and good , but after a while the slow aperture can hold you back , as can the limitations of the kit lens . Most photographers know after a while what their subject requirements are and those in the know realise they do not need pro gear at inflated prices to get great shots . I edit everything on my phone in Snapseed , regardless of whether the image was taken on the camera or the photo. Of course there are better options out there , but for the majority of my needs , which includes photo books , my audience is more than contented and since I no longer work professionally , I need only satisfy my urges . The hardest lesson to learn is how to let go of an image you are not going to use or need. The last point is subjective and to be honest , there have been a few times I wish I retained some images to play around with at a latter date . I have also lost countless images from older cameras that technically were perfect , but the computer died and the hard drive was lost . It was for this reason I began producing photo books . I found the video reinforced many of my own prefaces drawn from trial and error over the years . I am convinced that there will be many who watch this will have been grateful to you for making this video . Finally , a photographer is somebody who takes pictures by painting with light . It has nothing to do with gear and being somebody paid to produce photos delineates a person more capable than an amateur photographer ; although the expectation would be that the pro was trained to deliver the goods the clients want . Thanks again Roman .

A lot of these phone camera reviews aren't that honest and clear enough for non tech people, they are good now but still phone quality, you can shoot log but it is in ProRes file which is impractically huge yet the quality is not consistent in all lighting, you can get a dedicated camera which can get lower file size yet still in log and get actual decent consistent cinematic quality and actually learn further in photo and videography, the phone cameras are for people's convenient and unwillingness to further their knowledge and just want to stay and overpaid in the hyped zone and don't leave the garden to explore the bigger worlds. All these capabilities in it are just to show and support developments of its future potentials than an actual current full replacement of dedicated tools, you can use it to do what it's marketed and thrilled and get new one each year for slightly improvement but in same time you are aging and missed out to use actual readily available dedicated camera to record your life in good scalable quality. Just get the base iPhone and use for as long as you could for phone stuffs and get a dedicated camera to widen your view in shootings plus you able to grow emotional attachment and appreciation to your devices that way too.

Once again, Roman, you've said the common-sense thing. Different tools for different jobs. I once tried trying to reproduce a shot I took with my phone, using the DSLR. I couldn't do it in that case because the iPhone can use oddball settings that don't exist on the DSLR (ISO 34??), and it got the sky blue where it was white in my DSLR shot. I think the phone is better shooting through glass too. But sometimes you just need all the control you get with a real camera. Even with camera apps that allow control of settings, they can't beat the interface on a camera, nor the speed with which you can change multiple settings using your own presets. The viewfinder alone is a reason to keep the camera, IMHO.

That doesn't mean that I have no idea how to set my camera to get a blue sky, if that's the important thing. But sometimes the phone simply is the right tool for the job.

Very true, it's the use cases. iPhone beats the point and shoots a lot, and that smart HDR is great in certain situations. The camera produces ultimately the best images, if you know how to use it, just HDR is still a bit hard on a bright day outdoors.

It is not merely about quality. For me, a DSLM is much more usable than a smartphone. In addition, when it comes to flashes and strobes, you are out of luck regarding smartphones. The most important benefit of a DSLM ist the viewfinder. All images that I have been taking with a viewfinder are noticeably better than those with a display. I know that this is highly subjective as there are many (professional) photographers who are relying on the display of their DSLM (only).

So true, mobiles v cameras comparisons are pointless, i would even go as far as to say the same about camera v camera as its all depends on the individual needs. Personally I love and use both as a hobby photographer as I only have myself to satisfy. We are so lucky to live with the tech available to us. For me comparisons are entertaining but taken with a pinch of salt. Thanks for the video, enjoyed it. Love the room especially the slatted bowed ceiling and the window.

@@chrisbarron5861 my pixel has 11mm, 25mm, 50mm and 111mm full frame equivalent focal lengths. You just pick one at the bottom of the screen. It opens to the 25. It's also got 4k video with slow motion. The raws in snapseed handle your average temperature, saturation, contrast edits well. These camera phones are already passing the quality of rx100 and your canon g series 1" sensors and can rival m43 at this point. They're getting better every year. The best camera phones are NOT sold in the US however. The Xaoimi x Leica 14 Ultra produces beautiful images with selective aperture. You can utilize the OnePlus x Haselblad cameras in the US however. It's an exciting time for phone cameras.

Same is happening with the Hasselblad X2D as well. People are actually comparing the X2D to consumer grade cameras like the R3, R5, Z9, a1 and so on... It's a joke. These people are a joke! As for the ''iPhone 14 vs. XYZ camera,'' I've even saw a video where a women, a photographer, compares it to the Sonys a7IV and says - and I quote; ''The image quality is not that different.'' I don't know if they are actually, legally blind or just like to spread misinformation for profit, whatever the case is, these people are clowns - even ''famous'' KZreadrs/Photographers like Peter McKinnon, Jared Polin and others, made such videos - and yes I think they are clowns too, just for doing something so idiotic. Same applies to everyone making ''Hasselblad X2D vs. XYZ'' videos.
