The K Mise. Sounds great I would not pay $500. For a ukulele that dose not sound any better to me! Laminated wood is very durable and strong. Most people can not afford $500. For a ukulele. I pick the K Mise !!!!!!!!)))😊

I've been a musician for over 40 years, and to my ears the Kmise sounds much better AND the playability even seems considerably better in your hands. Of course the full sound profile may be different in person. Still, it's hard to ignore what I heard and observed being that the price is so vastly different. For my money I think I would buy this Kmise, and I would add, maybe you should keep this one for yourself. 🙂

As a beginner, I don't have a fully developed ear for the ukulele. The iPad mini doesn't help either. That said, I thought in the expensive one sounded a little better. The enjoyment you can get out of a $50 ukulele has got to be one of the top entertainment investments of all time for anyone with even a passing interest. But once you're in ukulele love you can't repeat that bargain. That's when it's worth the extra money for something that will give you a deeper relationship with the music.

This is a great video. That KMISE certainly holds it's own and has a warmer, albeit less resonant sound. It's a surprise how much character the KMISE has compared to the Opio. Thanks.

Excellent point. I paid $80 for my baritone at my local store and restrung it left handed. Had to file a little groove for the B string, but all is well. Don't give a second thought to putting it behind the seat of my truck to go jam with friends.

I can hear a difference back to back when picking. But strumming the difference is much smaller. The Koaloha is great of course, but I don't think I could justify paying $500 more when I'm a hobbyist not a professional. I really love that Kmise. It's in my Amazon wish list. Loved your review of it. I'm planning on buying it next and making it my low G uke. Happy strumming.

I actually like the sound of the $50 uke better than the $500 uke. Especially when you were strumming them hard. The $500 sounded more tinny and resonated too much. Maybe in person they might sound different but from your video, that's my opinion. And at 10 times less expensive, the $50 uke really outperforms it's more expensive rival. For playability, I'd have to try it myself. :)

Uke's should have a very ringing ("tinny") resonant sound and are supposed to sound like that, that's why they're generally regarded as a 'happy' instrument (although, you can play blues, & sad songs, on 'em). I'm gonna guess you prob' like heavier guitar-based music, which is where the Kmise sounded better esp. on Sweet Child'; personally, I'm thinking of getting a cheap Tenor Uke (larger, with deeper sound) for that reason.

I have to say there was not enough difference for a ten times increase in price. Fancy things are nice but if I didn't know which one you were playing, I doubt I could tell the difference. Perhaps hearing them live would of course be different, but with the money saved you could get a case, and perhaps a baritone, just for the heck of it.

Visually, from the start, I took the one on the left to be the expensive one, as did others. But we're not looking at it up close or holding it so we don't know what's wood and what's plastic, for example. So kudos to Kmise for making a ukulele that at least looks nice! And more than that, one that is playable. Just an aside: there are not many instruments - except maybe a recorder, or a harmonica, both of which are far more limited in the range of musical expression than a ukulele - where you can get something that is a genuine musical instrument, that you can play, and make real music with, for fifty bucks. When you think about what goes into making a musical instrument, which requires some degree of precision and art and craft, and takes a certain amount of time, and it has to be packaged and delivered, it is utterly mind-boggling that this can be done for $50. End of spiel. Back to the main story. Ok, look. The expensive one sounds better. It is more "precise." Has more depth of flavor, to borrow a culinary term. It gives each string the agency to act on its own, rather than becoming sort of a mishmash of sounds. It's like the difference between a mattress with individual pocket springs, like the ones they advertise with a glass of wine not being spilled when someone lays down on the other side of the mattress, and an old-school mattress, where the springs are clustered under the whole surface, so that when one person moves, the other person feels it. The expensive ukulele is the pocket-coil mattress. Is it worth it? Yes, to someone who can afford it. But it depends on what you're after. I currently have two ukuleles, a concert size that is rather mellow and calming, and a soprano, that's much more perky and lively. I love them both. And I'm shopping for the next three, of course. I paid about $100 for each of the two I have currently, and both were bought second hand. I'd prefer to stick to pre-owned instruments. It's nice to have one with some music already preloaded. :) I'm a life-long musician, but only about an 8 month ukulele player. I say: get the best instrument you can afford, and go for it. Watch a ton of videos before you buy one, so at least you'll learn what they are saying about each one. Patterns will emerge. Then go to Amazon, go to eBay, go to Reverb, check local listings (like craigslist). Try to play some in person at a store, if there is one nearby. There's nothing like getting your hands on a think to tell you whether you like it or not! But do it. Expect to be frustrated! Expect for your fingers to hurt a bit! Expect not to be as good at it as you thought you'd be. But practice, a little every day, and be patient. If you get 1% better at it every day you practice, and you practice every day, you'll be noticeably better after a month. You need to keep your eye on the horizon. Keep practicing. It is amazing to watch and hear what happens.

The more expensive one definitely has a deeper richer sound even though it’s slightly out of tune . That being said the difference in price is surprising. It’s incredible what can be built for such little money . I have mandolins that range from 300 to 3000 . And the difference in both is vastly different. At those prices I would probably have a huge collection.

We ordered it on AliExpress and it arrived in a great condition (in the Netherlands within 3 weeks) and sounds the same as yours. I did order new strings (Moonbeams), because you also changed the strings in this video compared to your first and it sounds crispier than the Aquilas. Curious how mine turns out. I fully expected to like the sound of the Ko'Aloha ukulele better, but I must admit I liked the Kmise better. It didn't have as much resonance, but I thought the Ko'Aloha's sound, while tonally more complex, was also a bit muddy when strumming it. The Kmise just sounded clearer. But as you said, you liked the playability of the Ko'Aloha better. That's something you can't experience on a video. I did notice the Ko'Aloha ukulele had a much slimmer looking neck. And if it's got lower action, those two things will make a huge difference in playability. I also liked the types of wood and binding and purfling on the Kmise better. Plus the slotted head stock was very nice looking. Really an amazing value for what you get. Thanks for the review. There really are many things that go into what makes a good instrument.

It’s really hard to say. You need to make sure you like the sound of the ukulele first. I personally like having a pickup added to one I already own (and love) instead of buying one just for the electronics. But you don’t need to wait to perform. As you saw in my BCUF open mic, as long as they have an extra microphone for your ukulele you can use any ukulele.

Haven’t heard a response to actual question, specially with so many fine or fine enough for non performing at half of price. It’s their money, do as you need, as long as you can afford, but be realistic with yourself. Like the Old Cosby line that no kid needs a $100 dollar shirt, unless he is on stage with his four other brothers. Personally I look forward to buying impulse purchases by people that spent too much & sell on Craig’s list. So, by all means everyone, keep buying! It was just a question and pointing to a more important aspect about falling in love with the instrument as a whole. Just a thought.

It also has to do with the "saddle placement". Do you see that the saddle is higher on the K? -- that's because the neck extends further out (also notice the position of the 12th fret) forcing the saddle to be put in a higher position above "where it should be" to take full vibrational advantage of the bottom bout of the sound box. On the other hand, the higher neck allows your hand to get further down to get easier access to the lower frets but, unfortunately, degrades the sound. ... Here's a sound sample, from a concert uke, that uses two identical ukes (except for the neck/saddle placement) but notice the "better" sound on the "shorter neck" version (starting at 5:25 and then 7:00).kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y6Sf07qRg8WTmqg.html

You are right about E-bay shipping, many outlets are but Amazon is far from perfect. Recently I ordered a very nice Ukulele from Amazon and they sent me a different model than ordered; twice. The second time they just stopped trying and gave me my money back. I think the take away lesson is the a general retailer (like Amazon, but there are many others as well) does not know Ukuleles and they don't really care.

  • @smudge0356

    @smudge0356

    3 жыл бұрын

One thing I'd like to add, to your point about buying from Amazon, which I think is very significant is that: (N.B. I do NOT work for Amazon). A absolutely HUGE amount of people STILL believe that when they use the Amazon website, they think they are buying solely & directly from Amazon; when the truth is they are NOT! It is very clear from the bad (1*/2*) product reviews on the Amazon website, that up to 90% of them are actually talking about '3rd-Party' Sellers (i.e. Marketplace Retailers), who are independent of Amazon. This can be backed-up by my own experiences, in that, when I want to actually buy ONLY from Amazon, in most cases (e.g. 8 out of 10) I have to search the 'List of Sellers' to find the 'Buy From' button that relates to Amazon. As to your point that, "Amazon... does not know Ukuleles and they don't really care." This statement alone, shows that 'YOU' are one of those people who really don't know, how Amazon works. It shows that you think of Amazon like a 'General Store', when the reality is that ALL Amazon effectively is, is a REALLY Massive Computerised Storage Warehouse & Dispatch Facility, fronted by a website that deals with sales, it is NOT A SHOP! The workers are given a list of Warehouse Locations, & Items to gather, (some of this is also automated) and to take them to a specific conveyor, which sends the item to the correct dispatcher. They don't care what the item is. To them, it is just a barcode; and NOT a, e.g.'Kmise Ukulele'. If the Item has been put in the wrong place on the computer, then they'll send the wrong item; which did happen to me once, I received a £40 PC racing wheel, NOT the £240 one I'd ordered (which was a "Warehouse Deal", i.e. a returned '2nd-hand' one). But that is a VERY RARE CASE. Soooo... of course, they don't "know Ukuleles" (some individuals will), because to the workers, it's just ANY ITEM on a shelf! Therefore, because of the 'Sellers actions' in your case, I'd almost guarantee you were working with a 'Marketplace Seller' and NOT Amazon themselves. That's because with Amazon, they ALWAYS try to put things right and make the customer happy. They have NEVER left me wishing I'd bought elsewhere. In fact, the whole company seems to be very much about keeping customers happy. That's so you'll use them again and, that way, they'll end up with more of your cash. In the example above, when they messed-up with the PC gaming racing wheel, I received a £60 discount, on a brand new wheel (£280), because of their mistake. This meant, I received a 'brand new' Wheel for £20 less than the 2nd-hand one I'd originally ordered. Okay, the £20 difference was refunded on an Amazon Giftcard & not in cash; but who cares? With service like that, of course I'm going to use them again.

Once my music teacher said a good guitar player can make a cheap $100 guitar sound like a $5000 one and a bad guitar player can make the 5k guitar sound like crap. Its fun to have expensive instrument but the $50 uke can get the job done in my opinion.

The Opio just looks and sounds so much cleaner and classier! Are you going to change out those tuners? But for the money, the Kmise is no slouch. I sometimes think about the approach that to the general non-musician ear, can anyone tell the difference? Probably not. But then a nice instrument feels so good in your hands and plays so nice and is such a joy!

Michael Popp, you’re back! ❤️ I’d have to agree with you. A skilled musician can make any instrument sound beautiful. I truly believe that. But what you said is true. A quality instrument just feels so good to play and brings so much joy. It’s really hard to capture that difference in a video.

@@girlmeetsuke2980 its hard to show in a video, but i think it shows when you watch your other videos that the Opio just fits you, and when you get that fit, this creativity just comes out of nowhere, and thats inspiring.

6 months ago, I'd have told anyone that they were insane if they said that in a very short time that I'm going to go from viewing ukeleles as being the somewhat annoying accompaniment to caterwauling 'tween-aged girls, to finding out that ukuleles are absolutely wonderful sounding instruments when in talented hands. I have been converted. The next time that I say that I don't like something, please remind me of this phenomenon. Wow, except for the whale inlay on the Kmise, everything about that uke screams, "This one is much better, to me". I imagine, though, that the true sound of both of them don't come through on KZread. Laminate versus solid is usually pretty obvious to distinguish, so the sound that came through my speakers is suspect. Judging from the presenter's comments, the Ko'Aloha probably does have much more resonance. As far the blemish issues on the Kmise go, it's $50, there are going to be blemishes on a $50 uke. Visually, there is much about the higher end uke that does not appeal to me, the sound hole shape, the headstock design, and even the body contours. The tuners, if they are as good as you say, do look nice to me. Although I have views that differ from the presenter, the quality and relevance of her review was absolutely as professional as can be. Kudos! The search for my first store-bought uke will continue. My personally built cigar-box uke is serving me nicely for now.

I have the Kmise spruce top. I am very happy with it, but I agree the strings it came with are not that great. I will probably change them out. For the price I would take the Kmise if the money is coming out of my pocket. The other Uke just is not $450 better. Now if the $500 Uke is a reward to yourself that is different.

Big question is... what are you going to need from it? Are you going to perform in concert for the public, or are you going to play, at home for personal pleasure, or are you just going to take it everywhere, e.g. to a beach bbq, for a sing-a-long with your mates. Let's face it, unless you're really committed to playing the Ukulele, it's highly unlikely you're ever going to buy a £/$500 Uke! So, really it comes down to, What is your lifestyle? Where will it be going? I mean, which would you want with you: at the beach, on a camping trip, at a motorbike rally. If you can afford both, then great, do what you want; but the reality is the majority will buy the Kmise.

Personally, I’ve taken my Ko’Aloha camping with me. Because it is that much more of a pleasure for me to play. (And hear!) Granted- this was a ukulele camping experience so I knew I’d be playing A LOT. To me, the joy and ease in playing the more expensive ukulele coupled with its superior sound make it worth the price. But I do understand that it’s a pretty extravagant price tag. One could get by just fine with the $50 uke...

I own 4 Luna’s so I have to disagree with you on them being cheap - I love the sound of my Luna’s except the soprano but it was my first one and my grandkids like to play it so it’s staying in the collection. My two concerts are a mahogany and my more expensive Luna is solid spruce which each one sounds totally different and my tenor has a rich tone so I like my Luna’s, they were what I could afford. Now for this last Christmas I bought myself a custom made Bonanza Oreo Concert - made from solid cherry with a walnut stripe concert, it’s nice but not as loud as the Luna’s, but it has a low G and I did change the strings to Living water strings from Worth Browns and I like the sound of it much better but it still is not real loud and I did pay almost $500 for it, in my opinion it’s what players prefer I guess, but I don’t think Luna’s sound cheap and they hold their tunes excellent, I can pick one up anytime, any day and they are always in tune as for the Bonanza I have to tweak every time I play it, but the strings are still settling in and tone wise it has a nice tone not as nice as your expensive one but mine does have a crisp tone just not real loud, even my cheap $55 Flight travel is louder and deeper than the Bonanza but it won’t stay in tune to well but it will work for camping. And I actually own a Luna Parlor guitar too lol

I certainly can’t speak for all Lunas but the one I picked up at the store really was awful. It even had a considerable buzz. I thought about telling the guy working because they really shouldn’t, in good conscious, sell an instrument with a considerable buzz. Sounds like it may have been a fluke. I have not played any Luna’s besides the entry level ones. I’d like to buy a Bonanza uke because I love Pete and Shelley Mai, but I don’t think I’m going to get an Oreo for the reasons you just said. I’ve played one before and did notice how quiet they are. I do sometimes like a quiet uke. I’m a night owl so they come in handy. Same with camping, really.

Yea it must have been a bad setup on the Luna you tried - non of mine have a buzz, and I just like how the fit my hands. As for the Bonanza I would might get another one some day - I would like a Baritone but would get a pickup on it. Shelley is actually having a big sale right now and selling out her stock and some of her personal collection you might want to check with her she has some great deals going on. I love Pete and Shelley - great people

Oh and I forgot to mention - I think with the Bonanza Oreo it’s a thin line too and I think that might have something to do with the sound quality if I was to get another Bonanza it wouldn’t be a thin line - I think a deeper body has better sound

The $500 uke definitely sounded better than the $50 one. That was instantly noticeable. I have several ukes, in all price ranges. My £65 uke (I'm in England!) is ok for practice and playing in the local uke group at the community hall, but for gigs I use my £450 Pono solid mahogany. You can't really compare the two. The Pono has a much better sound. Basically, as with everything else, you get what you pay for.

It may be hard to tell unless you have real abalone to compare it with. The real stuff is shell that's generally been stained, and looks shimmery like broken glass while having a kind of wood grain pattern to it.
