Thanks for video. Most people do this type of comparison in front of a backdrop or in an environment with some backlight behind (usually not in a real-life scenario). It's hard to imagine different situations. Yours is clean! Still an idea: I just wanted to see a side-by-side comparison at the end finalize my thoughts. It could be perfect video with it. Nice video. I do want to note that you can use just about any soft box that is double diffused and get the same results of the parabolic used. Once you add the diffusion to the soft box, that now becomes your actual light source. So you can get a more shallow soft box and save space compared to the parabolic.
finally a good comparison with no frill! thank you very much, this was incredibly helpful!

Its all about the angle of light man. Any softbox will do, just the angle is important. Rather more angled away with a fill bounce from the other side to minimize contrast

Thanks so much mate! I felt the same some time. I can highly suggest the godox lanterns. Such amazing quality. For softboxes its a bit different since godox hasn’t really entered the world of quick setup times lol

@@SjoerdWess Thanks for the advice. If you have the time for more... as for a parabolic softbox, I've narrowed it down to Aputure Dome light II or the min, versus a 35" nicefoto softbox. It's cheaper but the only downside seems to be the gel holder that Aputure has and it doesn't. As for lanterns, I was looking at Godox and Aputure options. Debating whether to go with 26" or 47" options. I see the Godox is around 34". I assume larger is better if I want to try and use it for moonlight in films, but I could be wrong about that. Always trying to balance budget with quality. Any thoughts on the parabolic softbox options and also the lantern options? THANKS so much! :D
@SjoerdWess
3 жыл бұрын
I wasnt even aware of the gel filter on the Apurture! I usually just put the get on the front (need pretty big sheets tho). I feel the Nicefoto is pretty damn good what the price. That is one item that I use everyday, and I feel grateful for having! About the lantern, mine is 65cm's. Which is plenty for most situations indoors. Moonlight recreation would mainly be hardlight, not diffused. But one can play around with that! I feel like the Godox is a very good value for money (and im not paid to say that).

Thanks for this very useful & informative video. If the rectangular softbox is mounted such that the longer dimension goes horizontally (basically rotated 90°), would the wrap-around of the light around the face be more gradual? If so, I expect the roll-off of light from top of person to bottom would then be much more dramatic.

Saw a recent video by an excellent pro photographer who showed that the deep, bulky parabolics are a complete waste of space. I've always though so too, but he published some good photos to prove it. A shallow circular softbox, with bowens mount, quick/popup deployment, and 60" diameter, is my current quest.
@SjoerdWess
3 жыл бұрын
I feel like the flat octa box in this video gives me great results. If I had the smaller version, it would probably be equally as good as the parabolic. The reason I like the parabolic dome, is that they are way more developed. The nicefoto for example, has a quick setup mecanism that you literary click in place in 4 seconds. No joke. The Godox Octa on the other hand is a true pain to fix, and even worse to break apart! That is worth a lot to me, since time is literary money on smaller set (where I use these softboxes).

I know what you mean man! I would get a parabolic with a grid. This is in my opinion the best option since you have more control over the spread since you can take the grid off! Also, check out the Godox SL60W. It's an amazing light for cheap. Get one of those, a cheap parabolic and a budget stand and you're ready to roll!
