I use the Yamaha DSR 118W but I believe that the sound coming out of it actually irritates older guests especially when the room has a low ceiling. Like you say, I need to tone it down at weddings!

At weddings it is a judgement call. If you see a lot of older people, reduce the volume on your bass-bottoms (sub-woofer), if you see mostly teens, then you are good to go. It all depends on what speakers you take for your tops. If you are using K10s or K12s then you need a sub-woofer is 75 people or more otherwise, take 15" Full-Range speakers and no-subs. 100 or more people, then take a sub or two. My rule, is to take more and not be without, than to take less and struggle the night if you need more.

yeah actually older people don't like punchy base which causing pain in the chest for that i like the CV.

I want to get the cv 21 sub. And I wanted to know how it did against companies like JBl Yamaha Qsc. I have found that those subs tend to have punchy bass. They sound good but really lack that low low end that I want. That blow ur shirt type of low end. And the test seemed to show that the cv did just that controlled steady lows The Yamaha sounded loud but struggled and was all over the place. Cv sounded more to my liking. Thank u for the info guys. Ps my tops are the Qsc k12s. I have 4 of them. Thx

Yes, if you want that chest pounding bass, that punch, then go with Cerwin-Vega! If you buy the QSC sub-woofer, it has a nice kick, you can't go wrong - BUT - Cerwin-Vega has that legendary deep low bass, the kind you can feel. It's a workhorse. I had them in the 1980's, the folded horn, concert style subs and I have them now. My 18" Intense Series have lasted me 10 years, they are passive (non-powered). I currently also have the CVA-18 Subs and CVA-15 Subs, they kick some serious butt. Almost, everywhere I take them, people are impressed at the sound. The P1800X are up there in price, but I am sure they are worth it and will last you a very long time.

The DXS18 had much more output than the DSR.. it is a bit more boomy.. but WAY more output!! it was a good $300/cabinet extra investment on your part!! :)

I have not had them side by side.. but, the DXS18 is more of a boomy sound, while the ETX is more of a tighter bass.. but, that is mainly because they are two differently designed boxes (with their porting). :)

The Yamaha rattled a lot ,regardless of frequency and level, the Cerwin Vega was clean and tight in all situations.Something was wrong with the way your measurements were taken.I don't dislike Yamaha, but in the subwoofer category Cerwin Vega is a legend and so very hard to beat usually in bass volume and overall bass quality.

I believe they are roughly, about the same. Just remember to balance your sound on the mixer, keep it from going to the red, then adjust your sound on the sub-woofers and tops. Most DJs don't pay attention to this and like to "red-line" the sound, causing distortion. If the warning light blinks, just bring it down a few notches and you will be good.

For any future reference to people coming on this video to make a decision, go to a store that has these and listen to them side by side for yourself. This comparison is misleading and lacks any data driven points. Ask yourself, where is the frequency response and distortion plots? Where is the group delay and phase plots? Where is the impulse and decay plots?

Yeah what Wes said. Why did you stop at 55 Hz we want to hear 45 Hz 35 Hz and lower that's what the sub is for. I mean my mains will easily play down to 55 Hz at a moderate level if I want to forgo subs and I think most people going to (should) set their Xover around 80 Hz anyway. Which brings me to another point. Why do so many DJs set Xover to 100 or 120+ Hz ? I guarantee my tops sound cleaner @ 100hz than any mobile dj sub on the market. That is unless ur only goal is purely for max spl

The Cerwin Vega has a very good sound quality actually, I'm surprised. The tonal quality on the Vega is very nice and it does have a great reproduction of the notes. It sounded like the Yamaha was struggling and really had a bad sound quality

I have compared sub-woofers in the past; JBL, EV, Carvin, QSC, etc. many, but not Yamaha. Although, I can say that thus far, the bass coming out of Cerwin-Vega is always lower and deeper. Which is what I want in my system. In this video, Yamaha does better with higher frequencies, BUT, I leave that to my tops. The distortion on the Yamaha, based on the video is no good. A pair of full-range speakers and a pair of Cerwin-Vegas powering the bass is all you need.

You can't judge a video on youtube for sound quality. There is the issue of what microphone they use, if any, as most clip with anything over 105dB. I won't even get into the compression used by youtube and loss. The only way to know, is to hear them in person. I really hate youtube sound test, because most are non-scientific based, with no charts, group delay or phase info and frequency response with distortion plots.

I truly do not get it.. why are you driving the Yama way over it's capability? You can clearly hear the horrid distorsion. So what if the Yama poweramp has higher gain? Personally I do not care one way or the other for either sub but the test felt inconclusive, haphazard and left me with way more questions than answers.

Its not distortion, that is a cast aluminum woofer, yes the actual woofer is very rigid, it doesn't just distort that easily. What you are hearing is what happens to the mic when it experiences high spl, if you were there you would be like what the F that S hits hard as F
