I am at a community radio station in Jamaica and the dynamics are very different. It is also quite difficult as I have been unable to get a sponsor for my program and I just can't afford to pay for or sponsor my own program.

As one who works on BOTH sides of the fence (Community AND Commercial) - the ups and downsides of both - commercial stations here in the U.S. are owned by major companies and, depending upon who they are and their operating models can be very local and do good things within the community they serve, or take the present "national" model and cut expenses (and people) to the bone and sound terrible. But people will listen because the musical preference of a station works with them, despite many of these types of stations being way over on the number of commercials they do, or should be, playing. Community radio stations in this country are typically state non profits (some have federal 501C-3 status with the IRS). They can be very good stations which serve small areas in a unique way. Or, they can be total programming disasters and operating disasters because the people who have been fortunate enough to get a license know NOTHING about how you operate a radio station in order to get and maintain and audience, nor do they know how to follow the FCC rules to keep themselves legal.
