Common Signs Your Betta is Sick

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In today's video, I go over the common signs/symptoms that your betta fish might be sick.
CW: This video includes occasional pictures and videos of some ill and stressed fish. I added these as visual representations are always best when available, although I understand it may be hard to watch.
I address the signs of each categorized illnesses: bacterial, fungal, and parasites. I focus on the appearance first, then state the behavioural changes. After focusing on these direct symptoms, I go over the signs that could mean illness and often accompany illness- but aren't direct symptoms that ALWAYS mean illness.

FAQS:
Q: How many fish tanks do I have?
A: Just one!
Q: Will I ever get a betta sorority/breed bettas?
A: Nope and nope! Both require a lot of work, money, and time to perfect- neither of which I'm willing or able to provide!
Q: How do you name your fish?
A: Sometimes I'm inspired by a character in a show or movie, or someone in real life like a celebrity. More often than not, however, I literally just choose whatever pops into my head- its like names I love but would never name my future children for whatever reason haha

This was so informative! Thank you! I'm always monitoring my fish because I lost a fish years ago. I have two now. My male is a picky eater, and only likes me when pellets are involved. Tank cleaning, and water changes offend him, but I can appreciate his love for stillness. My female, eats anything, not shy, seems to enjoy water changes and cleaning, seems curious about anything she sees! (She's my favorite) her tank is more out in the open, and the boy's tank is more tucked away in a corner, with paper to obstruct his view of the busy household. I love my fishes, so I had to overshare!

I’ve been trying to find a video about erratic swimming bc I always get anxious when I see him acting like that. He’ll swim everywhere super fast, he’ll then float, do “front flips”, and then float again. Idk what to do bc this doesn’t feel like happy appropriate behavior

so got my red dragon halfmoon male a few weeks back it went through a rough shipment day so my betta was a bit tired for 2/3 days then i started feeding him blood worms alongside pallets but his was not aggresive as my other bettas he did not flare at other fishes or bettas so i thought he was stressed or scared then after a week i introduced my other female red dragon with my new red dragon male who was not flaring and after 1/2 hours of introduction my male red dragon started flaring at the female and the female was also active aggressive so i thought my male is finally active and healthy but after 2/3 days of introduction my male again started to act strange he became kind of lazy he would sit in a corner of his tank and when ever i put my finger near his tank or near him he would just run like crazy but my other bettas never showed this kind of behaviour next day i changed his water but he was acting the same but his was eating everything he ate both pallets and blood worms then his fins started to get smaller his fins were not that big from the begining but that one time when he flared at my female betta only that time his fins were like really big and beautiful but after that day his fins started getting smaller and smaller and now he doesn't even look like a halfmoon male anymore what can i do to make him healthy? i tried methylene blue but i dont think it helped him much

There are multiple reasons for that 1. They are not eating enough (bettas should be fed. One pellet (1 blood worm, a pinch of flakes) twice a day 2. They do not have enough Oxigin Is your betta fish rapidly breathing? Does it have a whole to breath?

Help help PLLzz, we brought home 2 Bettas a few months ago, recently moved them both to 1.5 gal tanks (we were told this was fine-im learning it's not now ) , but my issue is one which is a bright blue and pink is fading fading FADINGG like white , not those white spots, like very dull and some of the fish itself is turning actual white. Almost as if the colour was "wiped off" if that makes any sense 🤷. I'm really trying to make sure we can try and save him !! Edit: also the tank does have filter and I conditioned the water before hand aswell, he does seem to be swimming pretty crazy , almost like he's trying to get out hitting the walls. I feel like he's deff stressed, but also something else . Seemed to like that tiny little bucket better weirdly, I duno. Plzz someone help

Males and females should not be housed together unless you are mating them two together, even then the female has to be removed. Males should not be housed together either. Please separate them IF they are being housed together. Also if females are around males (tanks next to each other) they can become egg bound which their belly’s are full of eggs, then reabsorbed back into the body, or you could be over feeding. Just trying to share good info with you. ☺️

hi there,..i lost my Jasper this morning..he was a beautiful red crowntail male,..i came on utube to see if i could get any answers as to way my Jasper died, and your video was the first one i watched,..for 4 days Jasper had been on 'warp-speed' around his home, and i thought he was just overly active, i feed him once a day and once a month i give him a treat of frozen blood worm, and that was 5 day's ago,.. he always sleeps on top of the plants near the surface as this is his favourite place, but the last few days he has been sleeping down the bottom of the tank in his cave and only coming up to breath, this morning (monday 27th july)..he was nose down among java plants..dead,...so, i am a little sad,.. but watching your video about bloating symptoms and swimming erratically fits how he was!..and yes i really thought he was just hyper-active because a couple of day's ago i gave him his treat of 'blood-worm' but gave him half a cube instead of a third..i wonder if i over-fed him accidentally...there was no other signs (physical) i could see that would cause his death, but his little stomach was larger than usual,.. so, i am thinking i killed him....anyway, thanks for posting your video,..best regards Andy..

An Ping possibly ammonia poisoning? I’m sorry you lost Jasper this way, I ended up losing my GloBetta Neyo this way, so I definitely feel your pain. The only reason I could deduce that I lost him (from what I gathered through the power of a 48 hour straight google search with no sleep) was ammonia poisoning, but I didn’t have a test kit at the time, so there was no way for me to confirm if that was truly the cause or not. So of course, my guess is just hypothetical. I know I’m always the type to like to know the reasons for why though. So if it helps, maybe that might have been what happened? I know ammonia poisoning causes darting across the tanks as well, and gasping for air at the top of the tank. Hmm 🤔 I’m unsure. But again, I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s crazy for me to come across this today though, because I actually just came home from the pet store today, and you’ll never believe what betta I came home with today!!!...... a red crowntail male. 🤯🤯🤯 I’ve been searching for one for about a year now, and I’d almost given up on finding one. And then there he was just sitting on the shelf! And now I came looking for a video on treatment for my other tank of female bettas that aren’t doing very well, and I looked down in the comments section, and came across your comment. How insane!!!!!! What are the odds!?!? I wonder if your Jasper sent me to you to let you know he’s saying hey? 👋🏼😏🐠 Your Jasper has been reincarnated, so I think I’m just going to have to, humbly, name my new red crowntail Jasper, in honor of your little guy. If that’s Okk with you? 😌😌😌 everything happens for a reason man!

Black fins, especially the tips, are usually a sign of fin rot/melt. Aquarium salt is always your best bet to start with, you can do this two ways: 1tbsp of salt to 1 gallon of water in a SEPARATE CONTAINER (like a bucket, not his tank) and leave him there for 10 minutes, and repeat daily until they are healed. You could also leave AQ salt in his tank at the amount stated on the box- they differ sometimes. This will work quicker, but CAN lead to a resistance, so do this method for only a short period of time so that the bacteria etc don’t become immune. Hope this helps!

depending on how the eye looks, it could be a couple of things. eye cloud is one, but could also be diamond eye which is not an illness, its a genetic disorder where the scales start to grow over the eyes which eventually renders them blind. they both can look pretty similar as well

Fish illnesses are so stubborn and very tricky! It’s all about catching them right away, but often times the symptoms are so subtle or non-alarming that we don’t notice it in time or even treat it incorrectly. Even in my research for this video, I came across SO much information that contradicted other sites, it is a very complicated topic.

I've searched everywhere and can't figure out why my betta is deteriorating. His water is always heated exactly the same. His water has always been very clean and since I noticed he's doing poorly, I've been changing it 1/2-3/4 every 2 or 3 days. The water is treated with conditioner and since he's been going downhill, sea salt and the blue liquid. No improvement. Just worse. He has always eaten all his food. He has the same appetite. He has clamped fins. He has damaged fins. I took his fake plants away. Still worse. They are not rotting, though. He is fading horribly but has no velvet or ick. His gills look slightly inflamed and seems like silver or something on the sides?! The past 2 or 3 days He has been lethargic but will come if I call him or to eat. He should not be stressed. He lives alone. No bright lights. Only today my husband started redoing the bathroom and I think the drilling and hammering could bother him so I've brought him to my night stand to be closer to me. He's in a 10 liter aquarium with filter and heater. His poo is normal. Please can anyone help him?

Before you got the fish you are supposed to do research and educate yourself on how to care for it. Had you taken 20 min out of your day to do even the most simple youtube research you would have known: 10 gallon is the minimum amount of water to keep a betta in, every time you change or put chemicals into the water you stress the animal and that a betta should be put in a well cycled (minimum a month) planted tank that doesn't move out of his place (an aquarium is not a purse, you don't carry it along!). Now your animal is sick and instead of educating yourself you comment here for "someone" to help him. YOU are responsible for your animal, you need to help it. Or watch it slowly die, go to the store and start the process again

stringy clear looking poop can also be a sign of constipation and poor diet, its not 100% exclusive to parasites. Also that " film " texture is usually their slime coat getting messed up which is often caused by parasites or even bacterial infections, i'm surprised you didn't mention that fungus is big white fluffs on the fish, because their slime coat is basically what you described and that's not fungal. there is also a bacterial infection that looks a LOT like fungus to an uneducated person, and treating it as a fungus will not help the fish, its also very quick killing and a major pain in the butt to get rid of. Dropsy also isn't an illness, its a symptom of failing organs, which can be caused by several things including eating plant based foods or veggies which cause the organs damage which is irreversible, and also parasites, its not exclusive to bacterial infections by any means. Tumors also aren't a part of any bacterial infection, if they are not actually tumors, they are a viral disease called lymphocystis, that's not bacterial either and tumors aren't caused by illness, they are genetic and is most common in dragons/platinums, them having a tumor does not mean they are sick. Bloating can also be from a poor diet and cold water, the colder the water the slower their metabolism, which makes them digest food more slowly causing compaction. flake food is actually the number one cause of bloat because its such poor quality. bloating can also be from internal tumors or a female being ridiculously eggy, which isn't that abnormal if the female is healthy. Labored breathing is usually not a good sign and something is wrong whether it be stress or illness, gill flukes which is a parasite has this symptom for example, its too small to see as well so that's something you gotta look into with that symptom.

Thanks for your comment! You went a lot more in detail than I did, but the video would have been impossibly long (and probably boring lol) if I had gone into any more detail. I also have other videos both uploaded currently and planned in the future that go into these a little bit further. Now to address some of your critiques: I didn’t address the “fuzzy” appearance you mention because it DOES look so similar to the bacterial infection Cottonmouth I’m assuming your talking about- and I didn’t want people getting confused. I certainly couldn’t address every little sign, there are simply too many. I couldn’t go into every little cause or symptom, nor did I focus on cures (this is in regards to the part you mentioned of bloating- all of which were true). I did research quite a lot for this video and of course referenced multiple websites which were NOT Wikipedia lol, and all seemed to have slightly different information, so I couldn’t include all of the “buts”. It is also where I found the “film” parts mentioned quite a few time’s as fungal, and the Lymphocystis being bacterial. Some sites say one thing and another says something else, and I had to use my best judgement- let’s be honest, fish are complicated (so many symptoms repeat). I approached this video as if people knew absolutely nothing on the subject of illness, something teachers often tell us to do in essays back in high school. As far as your tumour critique, I specified bumps on the whiteboard but said tumours in the video- maybe I shouldn’t have used “tumours” as the verbal word I used so loosely, as it’s true not all bumps are tumours. BUT I was addressing it as a generalization (like benign vs malignant I guess), so apologies for the confusion. I know that tumours aren’t a caught illness. I did mention genetics at the very beginning of the video, it was very quick so maybe you missed it. To me personally, an illness/sickness doesn’t have to be like an infection for it to be a disease. For example, I have celiac “disease”, and that is an autoimmune condition, not a sickness I caught. So I unfortunately can not agree with your statement that a tumour doesn’t mean your fish is sick, but it’s certainly ok to agree to disagree! From polls I had posted on my Instagram, all of the responses did say their fish passed due to their tumours, so I included it for that reason- there was, however, always a risk of inaccurate results due to the statistical flaws of convenience surveys and non-responses. As far as your last point, in the video I did state laboured breathing was a sign of stress and that any and all of those signs should be watched carefully. Just thought I’d clarify as maybe you missed that part! It was RIIIGHT at the very end. Overall, you make some really good points and further explain some things I wasn’t able to go into detail. While some things I did get different results in my research than you mention (I didn’t just wing it lol), I do know that I intentionally left some things out of my videos and provided some simpler generalizations to make it easier for a non-experienced fishkeeper to understand, especially with a lack of visuals- I didn’t want to just grab pictures from google, so therefore was limited to mine and my small handful of Instagram followers’ input.

Yeah i was thinking about Columnaris, i meant to put the name but had a derp moment haha. but honestly i think its important to mention that it can be either and identify the visual differences, which is why i said what i said, if you showed the two side by side you could probably make it easy for people to understand, because while they do look similar there are also some differences like how columnaris is also the body, its not just fluff on the body, under the fluff usually has a wound like looking appearance with obvious discoloration especially if its a severe case and the length and density of the fluff is different, fungal fluff is usually longer and less dense looking. people see fluff and automatically assume fungus, i didn't know what columnaris was for the longest time and since its so fast killing can't waste time trying out different treatments :0 I did hear the part about saying some problems people have can be from genetics, but the way it was brought up made it seem like you were saying they are developed tumors from being sick, with genetics, they can easily get sick more than others due to heavy inbreeding and breeding unhealthy fish, which result in even more unhealthy fry, but that bit of info has a broad spectrum, and didn't seem like it was implied towards any specific thing as well as tumors being mentioned in the bacterial section of your board. a tumor is something your body grows, its basically no different from a mole which can also become cancerous. i wouldn't call someone sick for developing a random tumor unless it became cancerous as that is an actual medication condition while a general growth technically is not. having a growth doesn't mean you are sick unless it is actually effecting their health like lymphocystis or an abscess would. as for the breathing i was mainly just saying it can also be from parasites, agreeing it can be bacterial or stress related, but parasites could also be a cause, so if its a continuous thing that specific behavior/ should be looked into more closely as well if things like tank parameters and stresses are already checked into and it doesn't stop.
